Introduction
Do you know what it means if an animal is "endangered"? It
means that there are not many of that type of animal left in
the world, and one day, they might all be gone, which is called
becoming "extinct". Dinosaurs, for example, are extinct. How
do animals become extinct?

• They lose their habitat, which means that there's

nowhere for them to live. For example, many animals
make their homes in the rain forests that are being cut
down. Once all the trees are gone, there will be nowhere
for these animals to live, so they will die.

• Some animals, like chimpanzees, are becoming extinct

because people kill them to eat them.

• Animals are taken from the wild and sent to circuses and
zoos, leaving fewer animals in nature to carry on the
species.

• Some people shoot animals for fun. This is called "big

game hunting", and if enough animals are killed this
way, some animals could become extinct.

• Elephants are taken from the wild and forced to drag

heavy machines to help people cut down forests. This is
called "logging".

But there is something positive: ENDANGERED means that

there is still time!!!
The Task

You and your classmates have been hired by the newly

created ENDANGERED ANIMAL PRESERVATION LEAGUE in
your city to write its first magazine about ENDANGERED
ANIMALS. As part of their educational campaign, each group
in this class will publish an article for the magazine about a
specific endangered animal. Magazines will be distributed in
an effort to educate the public.

The Process

Stage One:

Select a card with a photo of an endangered animal, Then you

have to find out who has the same card, you will be in the
same group.
Then you have to decide who will be in charge of each role to
perform the task:

EDITOR: You will be in charge of selecting the information

that will be included in the article. When the first
draft of the article is finished, you will have to
monitor its style and language.

DESIGNER: You will design the article layout and include

suitable photographs, graphics and visual aids.
You will also be in charge of the poster layout for
the oral presentation.

WRITER: You have to write the main article for the magazine
including the required information.

STAGE 2:

Using the web, you are going to collect facts, information and
photographs about an endangered animal. Your collection of
informational facts must include the following details about
your animal:

Appearance (size, coloring, etc.).

Habitat and home facts (country, type of land or water, nest,

caves, etc.)

Food (what type, how it gets food)

Life cycle special adaptations (features that make it possible

for it to survive in its habitat)

Why it is an endangered animal

What is being done or can be done to preserve it

You may paste your electronic notes and photograph into any
word processing program. After you have collected your notes
and photograph electronically, print your notes, and begin a
rough draft of your magazine article. You may use any word
processing program to create your article.

information with your classmates? Each group will design a
poster as a visual aid for an oral presentation. Your poster and
should display interesting facts information and photos about
your animal. Be creative!!!!

STAGE 6

It’s time for your class presentation! You and your group will
show off all your hard work!!

Great Job! The ENDANGERED ANIMAL PRESERVATION LEAGUE

is thankful and pleased with all your findings and with your
article.
You have become an expert on endangered animals and have
reach out to help them. You have learned why animals are
endangered and why they need to be helped. In addition, with
the distribution of the magazine, you have made others aware
of the growing problem of animals being endangered.
