1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this Maintenance Procedure is to describe to the user of the M1 LORAN
Navigator the procedure required to remove and replace the Navigation Database EPROMS.
2. APPLICABILITY
This Maintenance Procedure for the removal and replacement of the M1 LORAN Navigator
database EPROMS applies to all CMC’s customers. It describes in detail the steps required
to remove and replace the database programmed EPROMS used in the M1 LORAN
Navigator.
3. DATABASE OVERVIEW
The database used with the M1 LORAN Navigator should be updated at appropriate intervals
(at least two or three times a year) to keep it current with navigational and other changes to
airports, navaids, and controlled airspace. CMC Electronics issues new database updates
(revisions) every 56 days. There are two (2) databases available, an EAST and a WEST
database. The cutoff between the West database and the East database is Longitude 90
degrees west.
The M1 LORAN Navigator database contains the following record types: Airport, VOR, NDB,
Intersections, and User Defined. These record types contain the following data:
Note: Only latitude and longitude may be displayed for user defined waypoints.
4. EPROM OVERVIEW
The M1 contains eight 27C512 ROM/EPROMS (64k each, for a total of 512k), labeled #1
through #8. The software is contained in the #1 EPROM, and the database and LORAN
correction information is stored in #2 through #8.
The memory in the M1 uses 20-bit addresses over a linear range of 512 Kb. Data is
organized in a series of tables of identifiers, lat/longs, and extended data for Airports, VORs,
NDBs, Intersections, and TCAS.
5. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
The following document is required for reference:
M1 Reference Manual
NOTE: These items are required for older units containing Navigator program revision 100.3
or less. Refer to step 1 in paragraph 7.2.1 for instructions.
7. PROCEDURE
1. Open the top cover of the M1 LORAN unit by removing five (5) cover plate-mounting
screws from the sides and one (1) screw from the rear.
2. Make sure the M1 LORAN unit is right side up, with the front panel facing you.
3. The database EPROM’s are located in the upper right hand corner of the M1 LORAN
unit.
4. Carefully slip the small, flat head screwdriver between the end of each EPROM chip
and the mounting socket it is plugged into (only the socket is soldered to the PC
board).
5. Pry the chip up with a steady motion, being ready to catch it when it pops loose. The
chips are seated firmly, so they may require some cautious effort to remove.
1. Once all the necessary EPROM’s have been removed, cut the foil and install a
jumper at pads Z33 and Z34, as illustrated in Figure 1.
NOTE: Some units may have already been fitted with this modification. A visual check of
pads Z33 and Z34 is required before continuing. Units with serial numbers N10854
or higher were shipped from with this modification.
2. Each chip is numbered 1 through 8 and must be inserted in its proper location
according to Figure 2.
NOTE: Insert EPROM #1 in slot #1, EPROM #2 in slot #2, EPROM #3 in slot #3, etc.
3. The M1 LORAN uses seven (7) database EPROM’s plus one (1) navigator EPROM
(located in socket #1), for a total of eight (8) EPROM’s.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to insert each chip with the notched end matching the notch in the
mounting socket. If the unit is turned on with any EPROM incorrectly
installed, the EPROM will be damaged. If any EPROM’s are damaged,
installation of an entire set of original EPROM’s will be necessary. The
jumper, if required in this particular installation, must be removed and the foils
that were cut must have a jumper re-installed.
4. After having replaced all EPROM’s, turn the unit on and verify proper self-testing
sequence of all internal components (refer to section 8, Testing and Verification of
EPROMS).
NOTE: The WARN button will light after each initial power-up if the antenna location has not
been specified (see Section 6.7 of the M1 Reference Manual). Pressing it will prompt
the operator to locate the antenna. Once the operator enters top or bottom antenna
placement, the WARN indicator will not light on subsequent power-ups for this
reason.
5. Replace the cover when testing of the database EPROM’s is complete and all
systems have checked out.
If the unit is turned on with any EPROM incorrectly installed, the EPROM will be damaged. If
any EPROM’s are damaged, installation of an entire set of original EPROM’s will be
necessary.
Verify all information such as Airports, VOR’s, NDB’s, and Intersections. Start up the M1
LORAN Navigator.
1. Airports:
• Scroll to the beginning of the list. Make sure the first entry is not blank.
• Scroll to the end of the list. Make sure the list is complete; the last entry is
not blank.
• Check a few airports, verifying the following:
- City/State, Name, and /or Country Code (not blank or incorrect).
- Airport Name (not blank)
- Frequencies, Elevation, Runway :Information (formatted correctly)
- Latitude and Longitude (formatted correctly)
2. VOR’s:
• Scroll to the beginning of the list. Make sure the first entry is not blank.
• Scroll to the end of the list. Make sure the list is complete; the last entry is
not blank.
• Check a few VOR’s, verifying the following:
- City/State, Name, and /or Country Code (not blank or incorrect).
- Frequencies (formatted correctly)
- Latitude and Longitude (formatted correctly)
3. NDB’s:
