The Indian National Congress (INC) also known

congress party was established in 1885. The congress party
played a major role in the independence of India. For long
time off period congress party has the monopoly in the Indian
politics. In India most prime-ministers are from the congress
party. Mostly congress leads India for eight times.
The
congress party is currently under the leadership of the Sonia
Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi joined the party in 1999. In the
congress party mostly the leaders from the Gandhi family
itself, like Indira Gandhi. The congress party mostly led by
the Nehru-Gandhi family for most of the part.
In the 2009 general elections, the
congress party emerged as the single largest party in the Lok
Sabha, with 206 of its candidates getting elected to the 543
members house. Consequently, it along with a coalition of
allies called the United Progressive Alliance(UPA) was able
to gain a majority and form the government. There have been
repeated attempts by the Indian nationalist groups such as
5

Bharatiya Janta party to discredit the Sonia Gandhi’s on the

basis of her foreign origin –she is Italian born. At the time
Rahul Gandhi attract the youth and the rural people.

History:-
The Indian national congress was born on December

We can categorized the history into 2 eras.
• Pre-independence era - The Indian National
Congress fought for the independence of the
India. The Indian National Congress played a
very big role in driving the Indian message to
fight against British company. INC gained the
6

wider reach and people support with more than

15 million active members and 70 million
supporters spreading into the whole country
during independence from the British rule. The
other group was the moderate group. The
moderate were the more educated and wanted to
win people’s faith to lead the nation to
independence without bloodshed the activists
however wanted to follow a revolutionary path
and make it a militant organization.
• Post-independence era – In Indian politics
congress always have the good position. Out of
the 60 years since independence, the Indian
National Congress has been in power for 48
years. In 15th Lok Sabha, INC stands out as the
largest Indian party in the country.
Womesh Chandra Banerjee was the first President
of the INC. the First meeting was scheduled to be held in
Pune, but due to a plague outbreak there, the meeting was
leter shifted to Bombay.
The first session of INC was held from
28-31 December 1885, and was attended by 72 delegates. In
the end of the 19th century and the early year of the 20th
century congress attract the younger group. The younger
group added a new vitality and gave a new dimension to the
policies and programs of the INC. This new group was
sharply critical of the ideology and method of old leadership.
These new groups were called the extremist.
7

Extremists ideals
mainly guided the second phase of the Indian National
Congress from 1905 to 1919. They advocated that the
adoption of Swaraj as the goal of the congress to be achieved.

Traditionally, economic policy of the INC
emphasized on the importance of the public sector aimed at
establishing a “socialistic pattern of society.” The economic

Controversies:-
The congress party dominated the politics
of India for over a century. There are many charges of
corruption and any other charges.
State of emergency (1975-1977):-
In 1975 the Allahabad high
court declared the election void, but Mrs Indira Gandhi
rejected it. By using her strong parliamentary majority, her
party had amended the constitution and altered the balance of
power between the central and state in favour of the central
government. She had twice imposed President Rule. Gandhi
moved to restore order by ordering the arrest of most of the
opposition leaders. Her cabinet and govt. Then recommended
that president declare a stste of emergency, because of the
disorder and lawlessness following by the allahbad high court.
It is one of the most controversial periods in Indian history.
Anti-sikh riots(1984):-
Congress workers including Jagdish
Tytler and Sajjan kumar were accused of inciting and
participating in sikh riots. It is done after the assassination of
10

Indira Gandhi by 2 of her sikh body guards following

Allegation of the BJP:-
The opposition party BJP has accused
the congress party and its allies of being pro-muslim,
supporting sharia laws and showing unnatural favouritism to
the Indian muslim community or even promotion of Islamic
conservatism.
Charges for bidding for seats:-
The senior congress leader
Margaret Alva made a charge that congress seats for the
elections were up for bidding as opposed to a illegal
appointment to run. The congress party denying the claim, as
well as dropping her general secretary of the party.
Rahul Gandhi
says that “Democracy in political parties is non-existent in
India. You cannot enter unless you are well connected." In
response the recent allegations he said, "I had made some
recommendations to include some younger boys. I am not
unhappy with the distribution of tickets”.

• Absence of any big national party except BJP.

Weakness:-
Congress party have the following weakness:

• Rising unemployment is leading to frustration among the
youth.

how congress is playing a very big role in Indian politics.
16

Conclusion:-
After analysis of the congress party we can say
that at the present time party have the majority. The party is
the oldest party in Indian politics so it connected with people
from the long time.
Policies and programs are very good
because they are related with the people and beneficial for
them. It is the major party of India in it more young people
are involved, they work hard and with great passion.
In 2009 congress
comes with the very big majority in the Lok- Sabha. It has the
majority in the 7 states and in 3 states with alliance. To gain
the high attention of the Hindus they should change their
strategy because Hindus thinks that congress party is the
Muslim party and it supports the Muslim people.
