1. (a) What do you mean by pollution? Distinguish between primary pollutants and secondary pollutants.
(b) Write about the pollutants from mobile sources.
2. (a) Discuss the effects of SOx and NOx on humans, plants and property and materials.
(b) Secondary air pollutants are more dangerous than the primary pollutants from which they originate.
Substantiate the above statement with examples.
3. (a) Name the important devices for controlling the particulate pollutants in industries.
(b) Define ambient air. What is the effective height of stack? What is the criteria for fixing the height
of stack?
4. (a) Draw and describe the working of gravity settling chambers.
(b) Define lapse rate ELR and ALR, also describe the three major relative positions of ELR line with
referred to AIR line.
5. (a) Explain the principle on which the air pollution control device of cyclone separator works with the
help of a neat labeled diagram.
(b) Calculate the suspended particulate matter concentration in the ambient air from the following
high volume air sampler data: average pressure of the day at station level=725 mm of Hg, average
temperature =250 C, actual sampling time=10 hrs, sampling rate at the beginning =3m3 /min,
sampling rate at the end=2.5m3 /min, weight of filter paper before exposure=3.417 g, weight of
filter paper after exposure=3.925 g

be the length of the plates for achieving 99% collection efficiency if other conditions are the same?
Take particulate migration velocity as 0.1 m/s for pulverized coal fly ash.
