While operators are rolling out UMTS networks to meet regulatory requirements for coverage, the great challenge to
provide indoor coverage remains. Even though existing UMTS networks in general feature very short cell distances,
indoor coverage often remains poor. The Widermind UMTS Indoor Radio Planning guides the participants in how to
improve indoor coverage and integrate it with the outdoor network.
Course description
The Widermind UMTS Indoor Radio Planning is a 2-day course based on experience from live UMTS Networks. The
course is advanced and provides a thorough understanding of the UMTS Operator’s great challenge of providing
indoor coverage. Different technical solutions are presented theoretically and in workshop sessions.
The advantages and disadvantages of providing indoor coverage by introducing Macro-, Micro- and Pico sites together
with antenna distribution systems, fiber optic repeater systems, active- and passive antennas are carefully analyzed.
The specific network solutions for different hotspot indoor environments are illustrated, calculated and discussed
along with different traffic models for indoor coverage.
Contents
WCDMA and cell planning fundamentals
• Coverage and capacity
• Load
• Network dimensioning
• Power Control
Miscellaneous solutions
• Radio head system for multi operator
solutions,
features, reference system
• Active antennas: features, possibilities and
limitations
• Passive antennas: possibilities and limitations
Several practical case studies are performed, from the planning stage
through the system tuning and optimization phase. It is also discussed
how the antennas should be placed and how traffic generated by an
indoor cell can be maintained with that cell. The course also describes how
interference can be minimized and how coverage can be traded against
capacity in office environments by e.g. power limitations.
Prerequisites
The course is advanced and should be regarded as a continuation of the
Widermind course “UMTS Radio Network Planning”. Hence it is strongly
recommended that the participants have a thorough understanding of
radio network planning for UMTS and of the WCDMA air interface.
