The Excellency; all judges
The Honorable participants of English Islamic Speech Contest V 2010
And the Respectable audiences
Firstly, let us thank and pray unto our God Allah SWT, because of His mercies and
blessing, so we can attend the event and gather in this place without any trouble and obstacle.
Secondly, may His peace and salutation be upon our beloved prophet, Nabiyullah
Muhammad SAW. Because of him, we can find the true religion, namely Islam that we love.
Thirdly, I am going to say thank you very much to the MC who has given me a chance
to deliver my speech in front of you all under title “Hijrah: Being a better Moslem”.

Dear brothers and sisters, ladies and gentlemen.

We are now in the last days of the month Dzulhijjah. This is the time for us to prepare
for the month of Muharram, a month that begins the Islamic year, which is the calendar of
Hijrah. However, what is the meaning of hijrah? Hijrah may mean moving from one place to
another. Furthermore, in Islam, the term hijrah carries a special meaning. It means the
migration of Moslems from the city of Mecca to the cities of Habsy and Madinah.
According to my opinion, hijrah means a moving to be a better person. Hadist said:
whoever today is better than yesterday, he is considered one of the lucky one, and whoever
today is the same as yesterday, he is considered the losers and whoever who is worse today
than yesterday, he is considered cursed. So, that’s why we have to be a better and better
person. That’s a hijrah means.

Dear brothers and sisters, ladies and gentlemen.

The Hijrah that happened 1431 years ago must inspire us, as moslems. As Moslems,
we must remember this: Muharram 1432 Hijriah. This is a sign that a whole year has passed.
What had we done in the year 1431 Hijriah? Maybe we had happy or sad memories. Maybe
we had rewards or losses, in the world or in the hereafter. But the most important question
that we should ask ourselves, “Had we become a better Moslem?”
Do we realize that as we are aging we are closer to death? What have we done in the
passing days? Are we aware that as days turn into months, and as months turn into years, we
are getting closer to that last second of our lives. That time of death.

Dear brothers and sisters, ladies and gentlemen.

We do not know our future. Would it be filled with the Blessings of Allah S.W.T.? Or
would it be filled with the darkness of sin? We do not know. So, what do we know? We know
that the future is not the past or the present. We know that changes in the world will not stop.
The only thing that would not change is Change itself.
Therefore, let us make our Hijrah, from the year 1431 to 1432, into a more meaningful
one. According to Quran surah Al Anfaal 74, we, as believers, must emigrate, must change to
gain forgiveness and noble provision. This is not a physical change but a mental change. We
must raise our spirits and determination. We must leave the bad and sinful deeds. We must
embrace the laws of Allah S.W.T., and all that is good. As Moslems, we must always change
for the better, in speech, action, determination and spirits. Let Islam closely guide our
thoughts and behavior because Islam is the perfect religion in any place or time.

Dear brothers and sisters, ladies and gentlemen.

Thus, to achieve our goals to be a better Moslems, so that we can compete with other
nations or religion, we have to do some efforts. As Moslems, we have to have knowledge and
we may not be left behind from the progress of technology.
Knowledge and technology are really important for us. They are a key of life to be
successful people. To be successful people we must have a lot of knowledge because it is
really important for us. Without knowledge our activities are useless. Example, we pray, and
we do not have knowledge about praying, so our praying is also useless. As Moslems we must
look for knowledge from the cradle to the grave, from the childhood to the death. And Allah
said in Holy Qur’an “Allah will lift someone’s degree if he or she has knowledge” (Q.S
Mujadalah : 11).
But right now, many Moslem students are very lazy to look for knowledge. They
have a lot of reasons suppose their laziness. Obviously if we look for knowledge seriously, we
can also take lots of advantages. Mr. BJ. Habibie and Peter F. Gonta are few examples of
Indonesian successful people. Their key is the only one, knowledge. Without knowledge they
cannot be what they are now. If we want to be like them, we must struggle and every struggle
always needs sacrifices, those are study hard, pray and have determinations.

Dear brothers and sisters, ladies and gentlemen.

However, having knowledge only is not enough. We, as Moslems, must have very
good religious knowledge as our foundation of lives. We must build our religious knowledge
stronger than before to filter the world knowledge and technology so that we can use the
knowledge and technology for the sake of the human kind.
Thus, we are as Moslems, must pray harder, read and understand the Quran more, and
even apply our understanding of the Quran in our real lives. We must not be lazy to pray, to
read Quran, and to apply our religious knowledge because we will not be successful Moslems
afterwards. So, let us make the spirit of Hijrah become our motivation to change into better
Moslems and, at the same time, to change into successful human being in the world.

Well, ladies and gentlemen

Let us do hijrah right now. Let us move from the past to reach a better future. Let us
erase our laziness and then we study and pray hard. Let us hijrah from bad characters
becoming a better Moslem; A Moslem, who has good knowledge, may not be left behind
progress of technology and at the end, we will become successful Moslems who gain Khusnul
Khotimah. That is, in my opinion, part of the true meaning of Hijrah in the modern era.

Ladies and gentlemen

That’s all of my speech. I hope it will be useful for us. May Allah protect us, bless us,
love us and guide us, now and forever. For the last time, I would like to say; let us make the
spirit of Hijrah as the spirit of a change to be a better Moslem in the modern era.

Wassalamu’alaikum Wr. Wb.
