Solution for canoscan error 2 178 0 fix.

It works for all canoscan scanners and many

multy function printers too.

It is problame between the image unit and the logical feedback system. It is generally an
optical problame, the scanner cannot see the image. Maybe your mirrors are dirthy. In
this case you can clean them by opening the box and the scanning (optical) unit. Use soft
and fine cloth or compressed air. My scanner had one of the mirrors chipped and moved
causing the same error. I fixed it using PVC plastic glue.
In this case do the following.
1. Collect a gluegun with a PVC stick and a soldering iron. Appropriate screwdrivers.
Some cloth or compressed ai to clean with. Marker pen
2. Open the scanner, only unscrew the screw from the plastic not from the metal! The
metal parts contain the main circuit board.
3. Take the lid and the top off and remove the glass.
4. Open the scanning unit and check if all the mirrors are intact and clean.
5. Mark the mirror at the sides using a marker pen. Make sure you mark them at the
sides (close to the ends), so it does not disturb the image. Make sure you mark the
mirror faces before you take it a part otherwise your image will not be sharp if you
swap them.
6. Probably you have to clean them or maybe one of them is chipped than you have to
fix it.
7. To fix the chipped part take the gluegun and add some glue onto the damaged
surface.
8. When it is cold reshape it using the soldering iron. Try to make it as precise as
possible.
9. Cut off the extra plastic using a razor blade. You should get a quite good result
even if you are not so good in it.
10. Reassemble the mirrors making sure that the mirrors are as they were.
Remember the markigs can be visible only if you putting them properly.
11. Make sure that the lamp is plugged in before you reassemble the scanning
unit.
12. Try preview before you put it together. You can put a piece of pare on the top
of the unit and if it starts to scan than it works.
13. Put the lid on but do not screw it together. And try it again if the image is
clear. If not it is because you put the mirrors uside down and the distance between
the mirrors changed. The mirror’s reflecting side is on the top and the glass side is
on the bottom.
14. If it works properly then you screw it together and you are done.

Make sure that you use glue which you can easily shape or remove if needed. I used PVC
gluegun to make up the missing parts.

If still does not work:

Open the scanner and remove the glass and the top. You can use a strong light and shine
into the scanning unit through the opening. Keep the light at the middle. Now try preview
and if it starts scanning and shows an unevenly bright picture than you can still fix it, just
have to udjust the mirrors.
If it still does not work than you might have something damaged or some internall data
problame, which you probably cannot fix. You can try reconnecting the cables inside, but
nothing more you can do. I hope it helped you.
