The name December comes from the Latin decem for “ten”, as it was the 10th month
in the Roman Calendar.

The term Yuletide (’yule monath’) comes from a Norse tradition of cutting and burning
a huge tree on December 21st. It was supposed to symbolize the winter solstice,

days of Christmas.

There is an ancient legend that states that all animals of the forest can speak in

school run mum
Tis the season to be jolly!
I had no choice, when the PTA asked me to do
the Grotto at the school Christmas Fair. When
you’re collared in the playground, in the rain,
on the way home on a Friday night, you’ll say
ANYTHING to escape.
“Oooh lovely, I’m great at grottos,” I said, with
a brittle smile and mascara running down my
face.
I forgot completely until the week before, and
then realised with horror that I hadn’t got a
Father Christmas, any elves, or a grotto. “Kids!”
I shouted up the stairs, “I need elves!” and
started rummaging under the stairs for
anything I could turn into pointy ears
and elf hats.
Mr SRM is not known for his
Christmas cheer. His idea of a
perfect Christmas is being left
alone with Sky Sports and a round
of turkey sandwiches – so he
wasn’t the perfect candidate for
the big FC, but I was running out of time.
“Perrrrlease,” I coaxed, promising extra sports
channels and fine wine, and eventually, he
caved in with a throwaway, “don’t expect me
to be all coochy-coo…”
The day arrived. I rounded up a few toy
reindeer, armfuls of Christmas lights and
headed up to school early. An hour later, we
had a very twinkly grotto, and two children
with large Spock ears. Mr SRM was tethered
to a large chair festooned with glitter, wearing
a very fetching red santa suit and cotton wool
beard. “These trousers are very short,” he said,
tucking them into his snow-sprayed wellies for
the 50th time.
The Chair of the PTA, a Very Jolly Jolly Terribly
Important Woman, came flying in with a
clipboard, sporting a rather fetching radio mic
that was nestled in her Barbie curls but showing
enough to be impressive. “I say, are you all

set?,” she brayed. “Bandits at twelve o’clock!
they’re queuing through the vestibule!”
“Ready chum?” I shouted into the grotto,
swishing my Mother Christmas felt full circular
with gusto. Without waiting for a reply, I
swept away the curtains and sang a chorus
of Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree (at the
Christmas party HOP? Is that right? What does
that MEAN? Hop?)
The children poured in. Mr SRM ho-ho-ho-ed,
and impressed ALL the kids with his extensive
knowledge of Pokemon. One little boy
came out and said to his mother,
“he IS the real Father Christmas
Mummy, he knows all of Raichu’s
evolutions!”
Just as my little elves had fallen
asleep on the carpet and the queue
was dwindling, our great leader, the
Chair of the PTA reappeared, quite
obviously tipsy, sipping a large mug of
mulled wine.
“Oooh Christine,” I smiled, “have you come to
sit on Santa’s knee?”
She shrieked and I noticed that her tongue
was purple. “You are FUNNY,” she giggled
senselessly. “I said to the girls, oooh that
woman ish completely mad but she DOES
make me laugh!”
She teetered slightly as she leered towards the
grotto curtain. “Don’t mind if I doooo,” she
said, peeping round to see Santa checking
emails on his Blackberry. With a slow wink,
she reached into her jumper and rearranged
her ample bosom. “Ooooh heeeesh quite a
handshome Shanta isn’t he?”

“Isn’t it cold with no hair”, are the words that will define the day for Alun. As
the conductor for Gwyn’s Big Red Bus, Alun, is used to standing on the back of the bus in the
cold, but with his long locks, he was able to keep warm. So it was a true sacrifice for Gwyn’s
brother, Alun, to have all his hair shaved off for Children in Need.

Here are some photos of the fateful appointment at the barber, so you can share in each step
as Alun’s hair went from long to gone. Gwyn would like to thank James at the Barbers of
Bromley for undertaking the hair raising task of shaving Alun’s head, and we at TLS would
like to congratulate Gwyn’s Big Red Bus for raising over £300 so far. Thank you to all those
who contributed, and Gwyn is leaving the fundraising page open for a little while longer in case
anyone wants to add just that little bit more. In fact, we at TLS will be adding a
contribution of our own to Children in Need in recognition of GBRB’s efforts.

recipe of the month

Vegetable Paella
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 2 medium onions, sliced
• 4 cloves garlic, chopped
• 1 green and 1 red pepper, cored and diced
• 1 cup (that’s cup and not mug) of peas
(frozen are fine)
• 2 tomatoes, chopped
• 1 tsp paprika
• a good pinch of saffron threads (not
absolutely necessary), dissolved in
• 800ml chicken or vegetable stock
• ground black pepper
• 250-300g any long or short grain rice
Method
1. Prepare all the ingredients and have them lined up
in front of you in the order listed above - sounds a bit
pedantic, I know, but always makes cooking easier.
2. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan, add the onions
and garlic, cover and cook for about 3 minutes until soft.
Then add the peppers and peas, stir in, cover again and
cook for a few more minutes.
3. Make a well in the centre, put the tomatoes in the well
and the paprika on top. Then add the stock (with the
saffron if you have it), but make sure it doesn’t overflow:
if it gets more then half a cm close to the rim of the pan,
stop adding stock and just use less rice. Season with
pepper and stir.
4. Scatter as much of the rice as you think will fit over the
stock (depends on your pan, really), stir it in gently, then
allow it to simmer gently until the liquid has absorbed
and the rice is cooked. This could take about 20 minutes,
stirring occasionally. Test a bit of the rice to see if it’s
cooked, add a bit of stock or hot water if it is not done.
5. Stir in some parsley a few minutes before it has finished
cooking, if you want to use it, then serve hot. It’s also
pretty nice cold and should keep for a few days in the
fridge.
