Mixing Minds
The Power of Relationship in
Psychoanalysis and Buddhism
Pilar Jennings
Foreword by Jeremy D. Safran
“Pilar Jennings has written a book at once personal, educational, and creative.
Rather than simply conflate or contrast, she teases out nuances of each that enrich
psyche and spirit. This book stimulates eagerness and dedication to one’s own
unfolding path, making the most of both streams and their evolving mix.”
—Michael Eigen, author of Flames from the Unconscious
“Jennings speaks with authority about what the two traditions share and the differ-
ences they hold in common—such as desire and aggression—and guides the reader
through the mysteries of mind-to-mind transmission and of transference/counter-
transference. Original and creative, Jennings feeds our psyches and spirits.”
—Ann Belford Ulanov, author of Spiritual Aspects of Clinical Work

he revolutionary figures in this book are those innovative, non-
conformist masters—Zen “madmen”—whose unorthodox behav-
ior has helped define the radical countercultural movement
known simply as Zen.
In Zen Radicals, Rebels, and Reformers you’ll meet Zen boat-rockers
that span from early eighth-century China all the way to the bustling
streets of modern-day America—with a stop in the middle to visit a coura-
geous Zen master who made the ultimate sacrifice in his resistance to the
brutal actions of the Japanese government in World War II.
These remarkable masters show us through their audacious actions
and fearlessly lancing words that the pursuit of spiritual awakening must
ultimately be a rebellion against the very foundations of suffering in the
world.

author of the volumes Globalization and Neoliberalism in the “Very Short Intro-
duction” series, as well as the co-editor of Violence and Its Alternatives. Perle lives
in Princeton, New Jersey, and Manfred divides his time between Melbourne and

Principles of
Buddhist Tantra
Kirti Tsenshap Rinpoche
Translated by Ian Coghlan
and Voula Zarpani
A step-by-step commentary on
the meaning, methods, and results
of Tibetan tantric practice.
K
irti Tsenshap Rinpoche was a renowned teacher of Tibetan Bud-
dhism who traveled widely before his death a few years ago.
Revered as a teacher by even the Dalai Lama, he was known espe-
cially as a master of Buddhist tantra, and the teachings in this book are
a singular record of his deep learning in that field. Originally delivered in
California to a group of Western students, the teachings comment on a
nineteenth-century introduction to tantra by the Mongolian lama Losang
Palden. Kirti Tsenshap Rinpoche explains the distinctive features of the
four classes of tantra—action tantra, performance tantra, yoga tantra,
and highest yoga tantra—by describing the way one progresses through
their paths and levels. Finally, he gives a special treatment of the unique
methods of Kalachakra tantra, which is regularly taught around the globe
by the Dalai Lama.

en’s Chinese Heritage surveys twenty-five generations of enlightened Bud-
dhist teachers through brief biographies and starkly beautiful prose and
poetry from Chinese Zen sources. Andrew Ferguson moves chronologi-
cally through successive generations of Zen masters, supplementing their core
teachings with history, biography, and poetry. The result is an organic under-
standing of the tradition’s evolution as a religious, literary, and historical force.
Capturing the austere beauty of the Zen masters’ manner of teaching—their
earthy style, humor, and humanity—Zen’s Chinese Heritage is an intimate and
profound human portrait of the enlightened Zen ancients, and an unprecedented
look into the depths of this rich cultural heritage.
“Highly recommended. This excellent and exhaustive book reminds us of the vast
Buddhist spiritual knowledge that comes not from Japan but China. Ferguson’s
work is at once a history and an anthology of this fascinating tradition and
includes many koans, anecdotes, and stories. This splendid repository should give
instruction and pleasure to the general reader as well as the professed Buddhist.”
—Library Journal
“An indispensable reference. Ferguson has given us an impeccable and very read-
able translation.”—John Daido Loori
“Clear and deep, Zen’s Chinese Heritage enriches our understanding of Bud-
dhism and Zen.”—Joan Halifax

A groundbreaking translation
of the most important work by
the founder of a major living
tradition of Buddhism.
“Born in China, and spreading to Japan, Pure Land Buddhism is a form of Bud-
dhism that can easily be understood and used by lay people. Dr. Atone’s English
translation gives readers a chance to learn about the very first Pure Land teach-
ings taught in Japan and found today in the Japanese Pure Land tradition. A key
aspect of this form of Pure Land practice is the use of the nembutsu, a chant-like
intonation of the name of Amida as a sign of faith. Honen offers extensive testi-
mony to the value of nembutsu in everyday life and places the practice in its his-
torical and doctrinal perspective. Dr. Atone’s work is truly remarkable, and I am
pleased to recommend this book.”—Glenn T. Webb, professor emeritus, Univer-
sity of Chicago and Bukkyo University

oyously through the Days brilliantly points to our inherent spirituality, the
problems we create when we lose touch with it, and how we can regain it.
Les Kaye shows us how spiritual practice enhances awareness, patience, and
generosity, and enables us to respond creatively to the complexities, distrac-
tions, and uncertainties of our lives. This crisp and universal book is based on
reflections of forty years of experiencing and observing the relevance of Les’s
own spiritual practice to the everyday world of family and work and all kinds
of relationships, clearly showing how the spiritual and the ordinary converge
continually—not merely once in a while. Drawing inspiration from sources as
diverse as Saul Bellow, Herman Melville, and the great Zen teachers of old,
Joyously through the Days offers a path to a rich and lasting happiness through
what Huston Smith calls “goal-attaining patience.”

The Book of Mu
Essential Writings on Zen’s
Most Important Koan

Foreword by John Tarrant
Destined to be a classic!
T
his watershed volume is sure to rapidly
take its place for generations alongside
The Three Pillars of Zen as one of the
first books someone new to Zen will turn to
as a starting place.
The word “Mu” is one ancient Zen teacher’s
response to the earnest question of whether even

eBook ISBN 9780861716098 tion—and discovering for ourselves the meaning
May 2011 of the master’s response is the urgent work of
each of us who yearns to be open and at peace.
“Practicing Mu” is synonymous with practicing Zen, and “sitting with Mu” is an apt
description for all Zen meditation. And it is said that all the thousands of koans in the
Zen tradition are really just further elaborations of Zen’s most important koan, Mu.
This volume brings together teachers, ancient and modern, from across cen-
turies and the full spectrum of the Zen world to illuminate and clarify the essen-
tial matter, the question of how to be most truly ourselves at the deepest level. As
the many teachers in this book talk about Mu, we learn how to work with the
breath in Zen meditation, how to open ourselves to difficulty and joy equally,
and how to find freedom amid sinks full of dishes and cars full of children.
Though the third volume in Wisdom’s “Essential Writings of Zen” series of
anthologies (following The Art of Just Sitting and Sitting with Koans), The Book
of Mu is the entryway to the other two, the one with the broadest appeal and the
one that everyone should read first.

Buddhist spectrum. His Holiness the Dalai May 2011
Lama’s broad-ranging overview of this impor-
tant text in the first part of this book insightfully distills some of the most cen-
tral themes of Buddhism: why the mind is so essential to the tradition, how
science and Buddhism can benefit from mutual interaction, what distinguishes
subtle and grosser levels of consciousness, how the different schools of Tibetan
Buddhism elaborate such a distinction, and how all of these schools have a com-
mon source in the scholarly tradition of Nalanda Monastery, the greatest Bud-
dhist university of ancient India. It is a profound and erudite teaching, both in
scope and detail, and brings the reader closer to a fresh and direct experience of
this all-important topic.
As little has been written in Western languages about Khöntön Rinpoché, this
volume also includes a short biography of this interesting figure, who was a
teacher to the great Fifth Dalai Lama.

cross more than a millennium, the

Tibet created a vast literature dedicated
to revealing the profound truths about who we
are and how we should make use of our lives.
Sages living in mountain caves and monastics
pursuing their daily rituals used these texts to
wear down their obscurations and make space
for innate clarity and wisdom to manifest. For
those of us in the modern world with hectic
lives, however, such teachings from another
time and place can be nearly impenetrable. To
approach them, we need a guide, a helping 9780861716906 | 224 pages | $17.95

who has spent years learning the ins and outs July 2011
of the sometimes secretive world of Tibetan
Buddhist practice.
Bestselling author and former Buddhist monk Alan Wallace is one such guide.
With his trademark enthusiasm and keen intelligence, he introduces us here to one
of the most cherished works of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, Düd-
jom Lingpa’s Vajra Essence. Written in the nineteenth century, the Vajra Essence
presents the practice of Dzokchen, the Great Perfection—the highest of all the
Tibetan meditation traditions; its contents have only been revealed to those with
the requisite training.
With permission from his teachers, Alan reveals here the work’s opening sec-
tion, which presents the methods for calming the mind and bringing it to a state
of effortless concentration, the practice of shamatha. In his earlier book, The
Attention Revolution, Alan guided readers through the stages of shamatha step
by step. Here he uses the wisdom of the Dzokchen teachings to open up this prac-
tice into a space of freedom from hope and fear. He makes obscure concepts intel-
ligible to contemporary readers and allows us to glimpse the profound
realizations of a great spiritual adept.
