ANN Applications to Smarter Grid Approach

Smart Grid becomes a specific target among

researchers, amateurs and even policy
makers. The reason behind such a big interest
could be because of several factors. One of
the most important factors is the environmental
issue and another is the economical crises and
its consequences on the general behavior of
the society [1]. With the help of computers and
intelligent techniques, such a target became
more achievable [2]. The main title of our plan
is smarter grid, in this regard and for the DG
existence, a small scale distribution system
Fig. 1 Matlab/Simulink Structure of the power distribution system
has been constructed including variable load
which might be controlled by the means of
intelligent techniques, namely ANN at this
stage. Further details of applying online ANN
are reviewed to provide some reasonable
solution for such idea [3]. The idea is to find
suitable scheme to make the load in the
demand side controllable or smart. In other
words, the load in smart grid power system
should be intelligent. That could be done with
the help of computers and networks while
introducing the wind turbines, PV systems and
other renewable resources. Previous results
show the efficiency of the RBF structure and
the proposed scheme [3]. Fig.2 RBF neural network structure of the proposed controller

RBF neural network is a typical neural network structure using local mapping instead of global mapping as in multi layer
perceptron (MLP) . In MLP method, all inputs cause an output, while in RBF method; only inputs near a receptive field
produce activation function. The hidden layer is locally tuned neurons centered over receptive fields. Receptive fields
are located in the input space areas where input vectors exist.
The development of RBF structure follows three important stages. They are the establishment of training data set,
training process and validation.

Results and Conclusion From Figure 2 we can conclude that if the RBF neural network
successfully processed online, the output will result in an
intelligent load, after some scheduling or monitoring process. This
paper reports a simple and well defined approach to solve the
problem of variable load in smart grid. RBF Neural network
structure has been developed to achieve the goal of this paper in
a short and easy way.
