Another successful CROP/Hunger Walk

Volunteers are hailing another suc-
cessful Panhandle CROP/Hunger walk.
The walk held in October, drew over
70 walkers from the Panhandle section
of Montcalm County. Over $3000 was
raised for the fight against hunger. This
amount is somewhat less than recent
years, which walk organizers attribute
to the current economy. None the less,
the walkers were enthusiastic. Espe-
cially since this walk was dedicated to
the memory of Linda Eickenroth. Linda
was a long time volunteer who recently
lost a courageous fight with cancer.
Of special note, among the walkers
was the Rev Daryl Miller who is a recent
kidney transplant recipient. Walking
with him was the donor of that kidney.
Accoumpanying them was Rev. Miller’s
service dog, Rowdy. Seeing the three of
them walking to help others was truly
inspiring.
The CROP/HUNGER walk has be-
come an annual fund raising event.
This years walk followed a 4.5 mile
route around Howard City, beginning
and ending at Ensley Park. Walkers
raise money by getting pledges for do-
nations. The walk is symbolic of the
plight faced by many poor and hungry
people around the world. Walkers seek
not only to raise money but to raise
public awareness.
CROP, which stands for Communi-
ties Responding to overcome poverty,
is sponsored by Church World Services.
This is a worldwide outreach providing
aid in some 80 countries to help feed
the hungry. Our local walk is organized
and sipported by several area churches.
One quarter of all money raised is re-
tained in the local community. Specifi-
cally the Helping Hands food pantry.
Walk organizers want to thank all
who participated in this years walk.
And to extend a big thank you to all the
businesses and organizations who have
supported the walk.

MCC welcomes Howard

Newman as
new dean
SIDNEY – Dr. Denise New-
man recently joined Montcalm
Community College as its dean of
student services.
She replaced Kathie Lofts,
who retired Aug. 31.
Newman brings more than 10
years of community college expe-
rience to the institution. She most
recently served as director of en-
rollment services at Kellogg Com-
munity College in Battle Creek,
and previously served the institu-
tion as its manager of records and
registration and as its operations
manager.
At MCC, Newman is responsi-
ble for overall management of the
student services division, which
provides a variety of services to
help students be successful in col-
lege including admissions, career
and employment services, coun-
seling, records and registration.
“We are fortunate to have a
new dean with the talent and ex-
perience that Denise brings to the
institution,” said MCC President
Bob Ferrentino. “Denise is well
aware of the challenges our stu-
dents face and is well prepared to
advocate for their needs to help
them achieve success in their
studies.
“I am confident in her abili-
ties to help us move forward to
achieve our strategic goals fo-
cused on student success,” Fer-
rentino said.
Newman said she believes her
passion for helping students and
her experience in different areas
of student services will directly
benefit students at MCC.
“One of our roles in student
services is to help build the foun-
dation for student success. Our
job is to recognize the needs of
our students and help them find
the best path for their education,”
she said.

The Mecosta County 4-H program
has officially begun another year! Events
and activities are already on the calen-
dar and the Tamarack Town & Country
Club is holding monthly meetings. We
want to encourage kids (ages 4-19 years)
and parents to become involved and join
our membership. Our particular club has
been active for 30 years and was designed
to bring rural families together and show
their support through several agricultural
and community service projects. The final
results of these projects are presented at
Fair for judging. This past year at Fair,
Tamarack club members were represent-
ed in every age category and almost ev-
ery project area. Many were awarded top
placing ribbons and earned a fair price
at the livestock auction for their market

Village Tree Lighting: Chairperson Marjorie M. reported this event will take place on December 10,

Band on December 11, 2010 at the Library. After a discussion by the membership, a motion was
made by Marjorie M. and seconded by Arlene B. to make a monetary donation to the band to be used
for concert band dresses. All approved. A bake sale sponsored by the FOL will also be held from 9
a.m. to 2:00 p.m. that day. Chairman Pat B. passed around a worker’s sign-up sheet for the event and
encouraged all members to bring in several baked goods wrapped and ready to sell.
President Vicky P. brought information to the membership on the possibility of having an additional

The New Health Insurance Reform

Children, Dependents and Lifetime Caps. When the health insurance
exchanges phase in over the next few years, children’s pre-existing con-
dition discrimination ends. Young people can remain on their parents’
insurance policy until their 26th birthday. Starting 2010, insurance
companies are prohibited from dropping sick people from coverage.
Insurance companies are banned from imposing a lifetime cap on their
coverage for you. Adults with no insurance due to pre-existing condi-
tions will have access to affordable insurance through a high-risk pool.
More Care Centers, Better Health Care Availability. In 2011, com-
munity health centers get more money to enable them to offer more
services, for more hours of the day. Their goal is to double the number
of patients they treat, within five years. A new research panel has been
formed – an independent commission to advise on how to build a solid
health care workforce and increase the number of nurses, doctors and
other professionals our country needs. $500 million comes as an invest-
ment from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Leg-
islature recognized that with the population average age increasing as
quickly as it is, the increasing burden on the younger generation needs
to be managed, and quelled responsibly.
Discrimination By Insurance Companies? Some of the worst insur-
ance industry practices have been tackled head on. In the next year the
insurance industry has to revamp, to create a new, independent appeals
process to ensure that consumers in new private plans have access to an
effective process to appeal decisions made by their insurer. Discrimi-
nation based on salary is outlawed – no more special eligibility rules
for higher-wage employees. New offices will become available where
insurance consumers can get assistance in filing appeals.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
• Don’t swerve!
• Brake firmly
• Hold on to the steering wheel.
• Stay in your lane.
• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.

deer behind the shoulders, cut the front legs off just above the knees
and skin the deer up to the head and cut off. Put in plastic bag and
freeze it or take to your taxidermist. I will be happy to do it for you if
