FOCUS GROUP: Four Walls, Four Five Women

(November 19-January 9)

Presented by Black Artists of DC (BADC)

Featuring work by Jamea Richmond Edwards, Danielle Scruggs, Natalie Lord, Kristen Hayes, Amber Robles-Gordon

Curated by Zoma Wallace

Opening Reception

Friday, November 19, 7:00-9:00 p.m.

District of Columbia Arts Center (DCAC)

2438 18th Street NW

FOCUS GROUP: Four Walls, Four Five Women seeks to spark a visual discussion between artworks created
by Black women and a verbal dialogue between those who view and purchase them. The topic of discussion is
material. What are artists using? What materials do they feel drawn to? How does Black femininity affect or
reflect itself in the chosen material(s), if at all? How does femininity affect the delivery and/or reception of the
message?

The voices of the women artists in this exhibition are heard primarily through material form. Embracing both
visual and verbal discussion, FOCUS GROUP: Four Walls, Four Five Women hopes to determine how
effectively unique material languages are deciphered/valued/appreciated/acquired by a universal audience and
market.

FOCUS GROUP: Four Walls, Four Five Women is the second in a series of collaborations between DC Arts
Center and Black Artists of DC. The purpose of Black Artists of DC (BADC) is to create a Black artists
community to promote, develop and validate the culture, artistic expressions and aspirations of past and present
artists of Black-Afrikan ancestry in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

Synopsis: As we wrap up one of the toughest years imaginable, we are finding many in our workforce are worn
down by stress and worry, and morale is down. In LOVE LEADERSHIP, I make the case that there are two things in
the world; there is love and there is fear, and what you don’t love you fear, and the reason that the world is all
screwed up is that many of our so-called leaders have led by fear. I show leaders how to break away from the
long-standing leadership style- one based on fear. Instead, I suggest that the best way to lead in both your
professional and personal life is to figure out what you have to give others in a world obsessed with the question
“what do I get?”

Bio: A Young Global Leader for the World Economic Forum, an Oprah's Angel Network award recipient, a TIME
Magazine 50 (Leaders) for the Future (94'), John Hope Bryant is an entrepreneur, the founder, chairman and chief
executive officer of Operation HOPE, the Inc. Magazine/CEO Read bestselling author of LOVE LEADERSHIP: The
New Way to Lead in a Fear-Based World (Jossey-Bass), advisor to the current U.S. president as well as the last two
sitting U.S. presidents, a thought leader, public speaker, and an innovator in the business of empowerment.
Operation HOPE, America’s first non-profit social investment banking organization founded immediately
following the Rodney King Riots of 1992 in South Central Los Angeles, now operates in 69 U.S. communities, South
Africa and Haiti, having served more than one million individuals, has more than 10,000 HOPE Corps volunteers,
5,000 partners from government, community (including faith) and the private sector, has raised more than $500
million and helped to restructure another $300 million in subprime mortgages from the private sector to
empower the poor, for a total of approximately $900 million in economic activity for the under-served. John Hope
Bryant was born on February 6, 1966, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, California, and resides in
Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Bryant is a member of 100 Black Men of Atlanta and attends Ebenezer Church in Atlanta,
Georgia.

Tired of the Beaujolais Nouveau yet?
Try our Touraine Gamay 2009.
Made from the same grape, this wine from the Loire Valley is rounder, deeper, and more
minerally - we find it more interesting - than Beaujolais Nouveau.

We'll have it open in the store 2:00-9:00 p.m. today.

the detrimental effects of free trade and foreign debt on ordinary Jamaicans and the devastation
caused by monopoly capitalism in developing countries and the complicity of the IMF, World Bank
and WTO.

BODYSCAPES by
Bill Travis
"The body is often compared to a landscape. The contours, the hair, the
textures evoke so many hills and valleys, forests, oceans, deserts,
caves. But there is more. What I want to do in this show is to explore the
connections between the body and landscape, not in terms of a one-to-
one correspondence, but as carriers of feeling." -Artist Bill Travis

About Mark Eisendrath:

Since graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, Eisendrath has completed artist residences in Paris,
France and Providence, Rhode Island. The unique experiences gave him a critical perspective into his work as
an artist and teacher. Eisendrath's interest in teaching resulted in adjunct teaching positions as The Corcoran
College of Art and Design, Rhode Island School of Design and George Mason University. He has been
invited to lecture and present slides at Red Dirt Studios, Baltimore's School for the Arts and Johns Hopkins
University.

While Eisendrath has found his teaching experiences to be profound, nothing is more rewarding to him than
the on-going production of his artwork. His works have been exhibited regionally at Gallery Imperato,
Maryland Art Place, The Susan Conway Gallery, Goya Contemporary, School 33 Art Center, Baltimore's
Creative Alliance, Cecil County Art Center, G-Spot AVP, The Ann Arbor Art Center and the Towson Arts
Collective. In addition, his works have been included in some notable collections: The Alice and George
Denny Collection (Washington, DC), Kingdon Gould III (MD), The Concord Corporation (VA), Helmut
Stern (MI), The Rosenthal Family Collection (MI), Jay Fishman LTD (MI), Cliff Ransom (MD) and The
Cordish Company (MD). He received the Jury Prize from Baltimore's Office of Promotion and the Arts at the
Artscape Art Festival in 2003.

This sci-fi epic by the great Soviet director Andrei Tarkovsky tells of a psychologist sent to investigate the

"Massachusetts Avenue in the Gilded Age"

program by author Mark Ozer
Sunday, November 21, 2:30 p.m.
Historical Society of Washington DC
801 K Street NW
(202) 383-1800
free

Welcome to Millionaires Row, where the Gilded Age mansions of what is now Embassy Row still exude a
faded elegance. It was here that Martha Blow Wadsworth - an avid sportswoman competed with Theodore
Roosevelt and wealthy hostess Nellie Patterson competed with her sister Kitty McCormick over who had the
largest mansion and whose children would run The Chicago Tribune, the family newspaper. From Union
Station Plaza to Dupont Circle and Washington National Cathedral, author Mark Ozer examines the extant
Beaux-Arts architecture and tells the stories of the buildings, their architects and the socialites and the
politicians who lived and played behind those grand facades" Mark Ozer has translated his interest in
Washington into a series of books. The first, "Washington, DC: Politics and Place" has now been succeeded by
a book that focuses on one of the great streets of the world, our own Massachusetts Avenue. "

The author, Mark Ozer, an honors graduate in History and Science of Harvard College ’53, has in his travels
explored the interaction of history and geography of many of the great cities of the world. Since retirement after a
fruitful career as Professor of Neurology at Georgetown School of Medicine, for the past 10 years has given courses
on history of many of the world’s cities, including Washington at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the American
University in Washington, DC. A resident of Washington since 1964, he has found the place of especial interest as
he has interpreted it to those from all over the world seeking a deeper understanding of the meaning of America.

Thank you for your wonderful support that has helped SOME to
provide more than 1,000 meals to the hungry each day,
contributed to the daily treatment of nearly 50 homeless patients
in our Medical and Dental Clinics, and supported the operation of
long-term services like job training and affordable housing.

Last year, we asked you to take part in the Thanksgiving Day

Trot for Hunger to help the growing number of homeless people
in our community. Your enthusiastic response enabled us to
accommodate record demand and kept people from going hungry.

I hope that you will continue to help SOME feed and care for the still growing number of
homeless individuals and families by signing up for SOME’s 40th Anniversary Thanksgiving Day
Trot for Hunger, and by encouraging others to join or sponsor you.

The Trot for Hunger 5K timed race and family fun walk will be held at 8:30 am on November 25
in West Potomac Park, and will be preceded by the Little Turkey One Mile Fun Run at 8:00 am
(no separate registration is required for the Little Turkey; all Trot for Hunger registrants are
eligible to participate.) Registration is $23 through November 15 and is available online now.

We hope that you will start your Thanksgiving with SOME and thousands of energetic runners
and walkers, trotting to help the homeless and hungry. Please contact Tracy Monson at (202)
797-8806, ext. 1093 or at trotforhunger@some.org for additional information.

Sincerely,

Fr. John Adams

C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American

Democracy

C Street - where piety, politics, and corruption meet

Jeff Sharlet is the only journalist to have reported from inside the C Street House, the
Fellowship residence known simply by its Washington, DC address. The house has
lately been the scene of notorious political scandal, but more crucially it is home to
efforts to transform the very fabric of American democracy. And now, after laying
bare its tenants' past in The Family , Sharlet reports from deep within
fundamentalism in today's world, revealing that the previous efforts of religious
fundamentalists in America pale in comparison with their long-term ambitions.
When Barack Obama entered the White House, headlines declared the age of culture
wars over. In C Street, Sharlet shows why these conflicts endure and why they
matter now - from the sensationalism of Washington sex scandals to
fundamentalism's long shadow in Africa, where Ugandan culture warriors determined
to eradicate homosexuality have set genocide on simmer.
We've reached a point where piety and corruption are not at odds but one and the
same. Reporting with exclusive sources and explosive documents from C Street, the
war on gays in Uganda, and the battle for the soul of America's armed forces - waged
by a 15,000-strong movement of officers intent on "reclaiming territory for Christ in
the military" - Sharlet reveals not the last gasp of old-time religion but the new front
lines of fundamentalism.

regulation can or cannot play in its success.

In his new book, The Same Thing Over and Over (Harvard University Press, November 2010), AEI director of education
policy studies Frederick M. Hess explains that American schools have not changed since the nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries and, as a result, are ill-suited to meet today's challenges. Hess calls for a radical rethinking of what
schooling and teaching should look like, based on today's talents, tools, and needs. He challenges both those who defend
the status quo and those who embrace patchwork reforms--like merit pay or mayoral control--to escape the ruts of
yesteryear. Join us for a lively, hard-hitting conversation with Hess and three of today's best-known school reform leaders.

Paintings by Virginie Hoyaux, a series of abstract paintings exploring memories, dreams, time, and
space. Brush strokes are repetitive and rhythmic, at once defining and erasing space. The artist works
with this duality of repetition and absence to evoke built environments and their gradual dissolution
and evolution.

During the reception, owner, Heidi Hess will be addressing Hoyaux's visions and inspirations that led
her into the abstract world of "Urban Space, Concentration & Vacuum."

Rafael Sudan & Olivier Stritt

Raphael Sudan (Piano) & Olivier Stritt (Drums & Percussion) are influenced by different music styles
such as jazz, electronic music, rock, classical, contemporary or latin american music, they through
improvisation found a central point that allows them to explore all these kinds of music. Based in
Fribourg, Switzerland, where they recorded their first live album in may 2010, they are building up a
reputation that brings them to perform all over Europe.

Beside this duo project, they both have an important solo career, and together with saxophonist
Frederic Zosso play together in the "Square Glasses Trio." They offer a surprising musical trip full of
madness, passion and furious rhythms. Their inspiration will be the only limit!

For years now people around the world have talked about "those clowns
in DC." Well it's time to take the title back from the politicians and return it a little dignity again.
DC's monthly Clown Cabaret provides clowns from the DC area, and a few distinguished fools
from elsewhere. You just have to be the audience. Show up, laugh and play along. You are half of
the show.

Clown Cabaret performs the second Monday evening of each month at Fort Fringe. We will teach,
show and foolishly draw from any and all aspects of clowning: Modern, classic, circus,
commedia, theatrical, verbal, silent, knockabout, slapstick, lyrical and anything/everything else we
can find. So for an evening of artsy-fartsy, pie-in-the-face, clowning fun, come to the
Cabaret...come see what makes a real DC clown. clowncabaret.com

Noelle K. Tan
The America Project: utopia
Part 1 of an ambitious black and white photography project by this
CalArts graduate including 36 images documenting road trips taken
by the artist across the country over the past several years. Images
capture cultural markers of American history such as the Biosphere in
Oracle, Arizona, Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine,
Florida, the duct tape "x" marking the spot of Kennedy's
assassination at Dealey Plaza in Dallas, TX. "utopia", the exhibition,
documents the highest and lowest of the collective American dream.

Essay by Larissa Leclair. Tan's work is in many public and private

collections including the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, the
Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Albright-Knox Gallery.

Remote

A contemporary photography exhibition of four cutting-edge women

photographers. Featuring Lisa K. Blatt (San Francisco, CA), Lely
Constantinople (Washington, DC), Kate MacDonnell (Washington,
DC), and E. Brady Robinson (Washington, DC & Orlando, FL),
"Remote" refers to the desolate far reaches of the mind and the land
- places hard to reach but rich with reward when found and
discovered. Images of Antartica, compliment hypnotic ethereal
images of the sun and sky. Mysterious pictures of Paris, and romantic
images of Mexico connect and thread the desolation of the desert and
the rich colors of the evening sky. Don't miss this gorgeous show!

Opportunit ies

National Urban Fellows' leadership development program is a rigorous, 14-month, full-time graduate degree
program comprising two semesters of academic course work and a nine-month mentorship assignment. Fellows
receive a $25,000 stipend, health insurance, a book allowance, relocation and travel reimbursement, and full
payment of tuition, in addition to their ongoing personal and professional development.

The program culminates in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the City of New York's Bernard
M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. During the mentorship, Fellows complete course work via distance
learning. An MPA degree is awarded to Fellows upon completion of all academic and program requirements.

Following graduation, Fellows become part of a prestigious group of well over 1,000 multicultural, multiracial
alumni who are graduates of the National Urban Fellows program and who are effecting positive changes in
communities nationally and internationally. Individually and collectively, they are helping to create an equitable
and just society while serving as role models for future generations.

Fellows apply their expertise in the public sector, contributing their newly acquired leadership skills to public
service for the betterment of their communities and the nation. They return to their former or new occupations
more experienced in public policy decision-making and are better prepared to make a strong commitment to
equity and social justice, thereby fulfilling the mission of the program. Finally, Fellows give back to the
organization that supported them, recognizing that their ongoing commitment, engagement and involvement
and/or annual giving will help to secure the future of National Urban Fellows.

To all our partners in the DC region -

Thanks again for your support of StreetWise Partners' programs over the last 12 months. We are excited about further
developing and improving our Career Ventures program, as well as our Alumni workshops over the next year, to better help
motivated low-income individuals. Currently 77% of participants have a job, a promotion or pay-rise, or are enrolled in a
career advancing education program within 6 months of starting our Career Ventures program. We want to get this up to
100%!

I hope you will continue to support our efforts as a volunteer, and we have a new Mock Interview Day on July 13th (downtown
Washington, D.C., 6:30pm - 9:00pm) that we're offering to individuals who are applying to participate in our Fall
program. Volunteers will conduct three mock interviews in different interviewer ‘roles’ - CEO, Line Manager,
HR Manager – to give the experience of different types of interviews. Volunteers then give feedback about their
performance and their resume. You can RSVP to volunteer at this event by responding to this email!

If you're interested in helping us with our current challenge campaign to raise $100,000 by the end of June (last day of the
campaign today!), then you can text the word ‘partners’ to 20222 now to donate $10 to support our incredible programs. An
easy way to make a difference, without even leaving your desk! (more details below).

Thank you so much for your ongoing support.

Best wishes,

Lauren
