INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE

The Probe Media Foundation, Inc. (PMFI) in cooperation with the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) and
the Philippine Press Institute (PPI) will hold a program for Filipino media practitioners entitled, “Kuwentong Katutubo:
Spotlight on Indigenous Peoples”. The project is made possible through the support of the Embassy of the United States
of America, Manila, Philippines

The “Kuwentong Katutubo - Spotlight on Indigenous Peoples: A Fellowship for Philippine Media Practitioners” or
“Spotlight of IPs” is a fellowship program for Filipino print and photojournalists, television and radio broadcasters from
various parts of the Philippines. Through a fellowship program, a select number of committed media practitioners are
given the training on proper reportage on the rights, challenges and issues of ethnic minorities or indigenous peoples
and given the opportunity to create media outputs on the topic.

scattered in areas all over the archipelago. They comprise of
around 10 to 15% of the population and are ranked among the
most disadvantaged sector. They are generally located in ancestral
territories and have high rates of unemployment, underemployment
and illiteracy. They are said to experience a great deal of
discrimination, degradation of their resources and face challenges in
land ownership.

The situation of IPs is underreported or almost absent in Philippine

media. When IPs are reported on, it is often on cultural practices,
as victims of conflict or discrimination. There is a need to heighten
awareness on the rights of IPs, existing laws and advocacies.

The media fellowship gives media practitioners the increased capacity to report and cover accurately and effectively the
various issues around ethnic minorities, to promote the real stories on the issue and amplify the IP’s advocacy for equal
rights.

HOW TO JOIN
Media practitioners who belong to print and online publications and broadcast (radio and TV) news and public affairs
departments must fill out and submit the application form, proposal form and provide a latest sample work (article,
script, report, etc.). Editors, Photojournalists, Reporters, Directors, Segment Producers and writers below 50 years old,
preferably whose agency/network is a member of PPI or KBP, and have been working for their agency for at least two
years are encouraged to apply. Selection will be based on eligibility and creativity of proposed topic.

Selected participants shall undergo the following activities (all training-related expenses paid for by organizers):
• 3-day workshop in Manila on reportage on IP issues and media techniques (Jan 21 to 23, 2011)
• Coverage and reportage of stories on the issue. (Feb to Apr 2011)
o For radio/TV- at least a total of eight (8) mins airtime (e.g., Eight- 60-sec reports, Four 2-min reports or
one 8-min piece)
o For print – a total of at least 1700 words with photographs (e.g. 2 to 3 short articles or 1 long piece, etc)
• 2-day Closing Workshop to present and evaluate the media outputs (May 2011)
• Airing and broadcast of works in their own media agencies (Mar to Jun 2011)

Participants of the fellowship shall be provided with round-trip travel to the two workshop venues, accommodations and
meals, training including materials, and a sub-grant for the production/reporting costs for the delivery of the proposed
journalistic pieces. The application form can also be downloaded from www.probefound.com.
