escorias.
RESUMEN ii
SUMMARY
The aim of this project consists on the study of a municipal solid waste incineration
plant with roller grate technology and energy recovery. This study is motivated by the
expected rise in the use of this technology within the next few years due to the
objectives set on the II PNIR of increasing the proportion of waste being valorized
compared to waste land-disposed.
The projected plant is designed to provide service for an estimated population of
300.000 citizens, with an overall incineration capacity of 180.288 tonnes per year. Due
to adaptability reasons, the plant has two incineration lines with 12 t/h proccesing
capacity each.
The chosen firing technology is a roller grate as it is capable of mass incineration and
waste pre-treatment is not needed. The expected calorific value of the waste (based
upon several waste analysis) is 1798 Kcal/Kg, and therefore the design thermal input of
the grate is 25 MW, with an operation range betwen (110% - 60%) of the design point.
The furnace configuration as well as the primary and secondary air injectors allow a
high quality burnout and a residence time of flue gases of two seconds at at least 850ºC,
to ensure the destruction of dioxins and furans. The combustion chamber will be
equipped with an ammonia injection system to remove the nitrogen dioxides. Attached
to the grate there will be a wet deslagger unit.
The energy recovery system will consist on a natural circulation boiler with horizontal
gas flow, which will form a procedural unit with the firing system to optimize the heat
recovery. The steam parameters will be limited to 420ºC, 40 Bar to minimize corrosion
risks. The expected steam production is 53 t/h. The power generation of the turbine is
about 12.5 MW, of which 10.6 MW are delivered to the grid.
RESUMEN iv
The plant will be equipped with a flue gas cleaning system, so that, the plant
accomplishes whith the standars of the European Directive 2000/76/CE. This system
will consist on a semi-dry cleaning process with addition of hidrated lime and activated
coke in order to remove acid gases and organic compounds (dioxins and furans). It will
also be equipped with fabric filters for dust separation. There will be a mesure and
monitoring system to verify the gas cleaning system operation.
A control system is provided to adjust the plant operation parameters to the residue
parameters.
The plant incomings will be the royalties charged to the local authorities per waste
tonne treated (30 €/t) and the sale of the electrical energy generated, including the bonus
given to energy from waste producers (R.D 436/2004). The operating costs will consist
on salaries and absorption media costs. On the bases of a 25 year operation study, the
foreseen Pay-back is 11 years, with an internal return of 8,12%, making economically
interesting this project.
The overall budget, including design, building and starting costs, is 78.186.000 €.
