Information for Midterm Exam #1


Time: Tuesday, October 12th, 2010, 2:50-4:15pm.

Academic Honesty Statement: Students are required to sign their names in the underline space
below an academic honesty statement identical to the following paragraph. Make sure you read
and understand the statement. A midterm exam without the ``Academic Honesty Statement''
signature will not be graded.

these answers, I did not discuss with and receive any help from any other human being prior to

Specific Exam Instructions:


• The exam contains two types of questions, totaling 100 points and divided into two
categories:
1. Conceptual: Circle your choice of answer on the problem statement sheet. No
mathematical work necessary. 3 points will be given to each correct answer. No
partial credits. There will be 8 conceptual questions.
2. Numerical: The numerical problems require demonstration of solution approach
in the answer booklets for credits. There will be 4 numerical long problems.

 Full credits will be awarded to a completed and correct solution approach,


including computation.
 Partial credits will be awarded depending on the appropriateness of the
solution approach to the problem based on the grader's judgment.
• If you have questions regarding interpretation of the questions, raise your hand to get the
proctor’s or Prof. Huang’s attention.
• The exam will cover topics of Chapters 1, 2, 12 and 13 from your textbook.
• Only ONE sheet of notes (hand-written or printed) is allowed in the exam for reference.
No sharing of notes during exam is allowed.
• Make sure to include the following view factor expressions or plots on your reference
sheet:
o Aligned parallel rectangles (Table 13-1 or Figure 13-5)
o Coaxial parallel disks (Table 13-1 or Figure 13-7)
o Perpendicular rectangles with a common edge (Table 13-1 or Figure 13-6)
o Parallel plates with midlines connected by perpendicular line (Table 13-2)
o Perpendicular plates with a common edge (Table 13-2)
o View factors of other geometric configurations will NOT be on the exam.
• One numerical problem will be almost identical to a homework problem (numerics or
variables are changed).
• Calculators will be needed and no sharing will be allowed.

Make-up Exam:
No make-up exam will be given without prior consent of the instructor. In the case of medical
emergency, a written documentation from a physician stating the nature of the medical
emergency is required for a make-up exam.
