Abram, as he was
known in the early
years of his life, was living among
this family in the center of civiliza-
tion among the ancient people of
Babylon (known as Sumer by his-
torians). The city of Ur, his home-
town, was well-known for its lux-
ury and sophistication. Ur was a
someplace. Important people
came to live in Ur.
One day the predictability of his
life was shattered forever. God
called. Abram! Leave your coun-
try, your people and your father’s
family and go to the land I will
show you. But Abraham does not
actually get to “own” the land,
outside of being buried there. The
land, however, was only a part of
the package that God had planned
for Abraham. The God who called
promised: I will make you into a
great nation and I will bless you …
and all peoples on earth will be
blessed through you. Sounds like
a good deal, right? Yet before
Abraham’s story is over, he will
have to run to Egypt to escape a
famine in the good land God
promised him, he will nearly lose
his wife twice to protect his own
life, and his relationship with his
nephew Lot will disintegrate.
Moreover, attempting to make
God’s call work to his benefit,
Abraham will seek to adopt his
servant; his wife Sarah will seek to
speed the process along by offer-
ing her servant Hagar to Abraham
so they can have a heir; and to
top it off, Sarah will laugh at God’s
messengers when they promise
that she will have a child. You see,
when God calls you, you will
have to make some radical
a d - justments.
Nonetheless, in the end, Abraham
and Sarah will show that they are
committed to God’s plan. Despite
Abraham’s missteps and occa-
sional lack of faith, he proves
faithful even if it means sacrificing
the promised heir—because he
learns that the God who calls is
also the God who is faithful.
This God has a mission for you. He
wants to lead you to the yet un-
discovered country.

Confidence In Scripture

The Narnia children’s books written by C. S. Lewis symbolize Christian

truth. In the tale Prince Caspian, Lewis tells the story of a tyrant who
usurped the throne of the enchanted land of Narnia. His young
nephew, Prince Caspian, has heard stories of Narnia’s great king who
died and rose again to break the power of evil. His uncle dismisses this
story as a fairy tale. However, the boy later discovers that the ancient
story is in fact true.
Lewis’ intent was to illustrate how skeptics often dismiss the ancient
story of Christ as a myth. But, like biblical scholars today, Lewis was
convinced that based on the historic evidence, the record of Jesus’
supernatural life is true. Sir Frederic Kenyon, former director of the
British Museum, held a similar conviction about Scripture’s reliability.
Of this he wrote, “Both the authenticity and the general integrity of
the books of the New Testament may be regarded as . . . established.”
The apostles had the same confidence in the record of Jesus: “We did
not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the
power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of
His majesty” (2 Peter 1:16).
We can be assured that the biblical account of the King of kings is an
accurate historical record.

This puzzle consists of 26 rows of letters with one empty
space in each row. There is one place for each letter of the
alphabet in the 26 empty squares. Fill in each letter so that a
word of at least 5 letters is formed reading across only. Not
all the letters in each row are used; it's up to you to discover
which ones are needed to complete the right words. Some of
the letters may fit in more than one of the empty squares to
complete words; however only one arrangement of all the
letters of the alphabet will complete a word in each row.
