Swirl Ratio
B34 RN4802
Introduction:
Several engine models in WAVE require information regarding in-cylinder swirl motion,
including the diesel jet combustion, Woschni heat transfer, and IRIS flow heat transfer sub-
models. Often times, this information can be provided in one of two forms:
• A swirl ratio, which is a measured or predicted state of the gas in the cylinder, usually
taken at a particular time in the cycle, such as at IVC.
• A swirl coefficient, which is a design characteristic of the cylinder's port configuration.
Swirl coefficients are used to dynamically calculate the swirl behavior during the open loop
portion of the engine cycle. A profile of coefficients vs. valve lift is required as input to the
engine cylinder internal flow sub-models to predict the swirl ratio during the simulation.
