Adding fog warning lights to Mk1

This “how to” will cover how to add fog warning lights to the Mk1 dashboard after fitting of an
Mk2 dash surround. This way you will not need to get a complete Mk2 dashboard.

As many of you know the Mk1 have the warning lights in the dash surround and Mk2 have them in
the dashboard as standard. Addition of the warning lights can be done in different ways but what I
think is the best looking way is to put the warning lights into the dashboard with the correct looking
symbols like the Mk2.

For this modification you will need:

• Mk2 right hand dashboard warning symbol plate, see below (98BP-10A936-GA)
• 2 pins from dashboard connector
• 2 bulbs for the dashboard
• Cutting nipper (wire cutter)
• Small knife
• Soldering iron, tin solder
• Insulation tape
• 2 different coloured wires about 50 – 70 cm.
And what else needed for removing the dashboard (cross-point screwdriver).

The cheapest way to make this modification will be to find the symbol plate, 2 bulbs and the 2 pins
at a scrap yard. I do not think the pins can be purchased from Ford but the symbol plate and bulbs
perhaps.

If you want to do this modification I suggest that you read the whole instruction first and then go
ahead.

Swapping symbol plates

The Mk2 warning lights in the dashboard (right side) look like this when lit:

First you will need to remove the dashboard to exchange the Mk1 symbol plate for the Mk2 type
1. Started demounting the dash surround
2. Unscrew the dashboard (5 recessed screws)
3. Remove the cable for the speedometer (if cable driven like mine)
4. Remove the two dashboard connectors
5. Remove the dashboard
6. Exchange the symbol plate for the Mk2 type

Modifying dashboard
Then you will need to make a little modification the back of the dashboard for the lights to work
properly.

Here is the area we need to work with.

It is the plug fitted to the black connector we need

to alter a bit (see later section).

1. Cut away a small piece of copper (track)

as shown in the picture below.
2. Add a small piece of wire between the
two tracks (from below: first and third
track) as shown in the picture below. Be
careful not to make contact with other
tracks.
3. Add the two bulbs in the sockets as shown
above

The wire that has been cut is +12V and we need a

GND for the warning lights to work properly. The
ground can be found in the connector pin 4 (see
next step).

Wiring up dashboard connector

Next step will be to wire up the two bulbs. This can be done in more than one way. You can either
1. Solder a wire to each of the tracks leading to the two bulbs
Or you can
2. Add two extra pins with wires to the existent connector

I have chosen to add two extra pins. I have got mine from the connector for a Fiesta dashboard
hence the strange looking pin types.

The pins can be put into the existent connector by separating the connector (see picture below).

The pin numbers can be seen on the

picture.

Pin 4: GND
Pin 9: Rear fog warning light
Pin 10: Front fog-warning light

After the wires/pins are in place inside the connector reassemble it.

Next step is to pull the two new wires towards the light switch. To be able to do that you will need
to remove the light switch surround. This is done by pulling out the surround; you might have to
pull hard to loosen it.

At the picture below you can see the light switch, Mk1 fog light warning connector (upper left
corner) and the two new wires (twisted) that I have wired up to the old fog light warning connector.

Mk1 fog light warning connector:

Pin1: GND
Pin3: Front fog lights
Pin5: Rear fog lights

1. Pull back a small piece of the insulating on the wires going to warning connector pin 3 and
5. Do the same on the new wires from the dash connector
2. Twist the wire from dashboard connector pin 9 around to the wire going to pin 5 in the fog
warning connector.
3. Twist the wire from dashboard connector pin 10 around to the wire going to pin 3 in the fog
warning connector.
4. Solder both joint and wrap some insulation tape around it (see picture above)

After this has been done test that the warning lights are working. If they do reassemble the dash in
the opposite succession and enjoy your new and finished work ☺

Flash (Martin)
