AOA My name is ……………..

, me and my team are here to present our Final year project

proposal under the title “Stabilization of Soil by using different additives”. The Supervisor of
our project is Engr. Kamran Iqbal.

These are the contents of our project proposal, which include Introduction, Problem Statement,
Objectives of the research, Literature review, Methodology, Deliverance of the Research,
Proposed Work Schedule and References.

So starting with the introduction, one of the most common valuable natural resources available
to us is soil. Soil material is a critical component in the construction industries. Soil serves as a
foundation for most construction projects. It is known that sometimes the soil conditions are
very poor even at greater depth and it is not practical to construct even deep foundation. In
such cases various methods of soil stabilization technique is adopted. The objective is to
improve the characteristics at site and make soil capable of carrying load and to increase the
shear strength while decrease the compressibility of the soil. By soil stabilization, the soil
becomes more stable by the reduction in the permeability and compressibility and by the
increase in shear strength. Due to non-stabilization of soil the problems like slope failures,
bridge failures, and structural failures occur. To carry out this project many experiments were
done, which are also included in the report. Further ……….… will tell you about the Problem
Statement.

Thank you …….…., So this is the problem statement for which the research will be carried out. A
problem that continually faces an Engineer is dealing with the procedure and techniques by
which an unsuitable soil may be improved by means of stabilization. In many instances,
subgrade soils which are unsatisfactory in their natural state can be altered by means of adding
admixtures or by proper compaction and thus made suitable for highway subgrade
construction. So this study is aimed to ease the work of an Engineer by the use of different
additives or stabilizing agents in the soil so as to improve the different properties of soil and
make soil capable of carrying load.

The main objective of our research is to improve the stability or bearing power of the soil by the
use of controlled compaction, proportioning and the addition of suitable admixture or
stabilizer.

After discussing the Aim of our research, it also has the background. An extensive research
work has been done till date on the stabilization of Soil. Some of them are studied for getting
idea for our project.
First one in which is:

• The research work of Gautreau in (2009) and Prof Suksun Horpibulsuk in (2010). They
found different types of results for cement stabilized soils. Horpibulsuk reported an
increase in maximum dry density with no significant change in optimum moisture
content while Gautreau found out that there is no significant difference in optimum
moisture content and maximum dry density with cement content.

• Another research work which we have studied for our project is the research of
Bhattacharja and Bhatty in (2003). They compared the performance of lime and cement
on three different types of soils in Texas with Plasticity Index (PI) of 25%, 37% and 42%,
and found that for all soils, better performance was observed from cement stabilizer.

• In 2008, Parker also research over the stabilization of soil. He used two different
subgrade soils and stabilized with cement, lime and fly ash then tested for series of
durability tests including freeze and thaw/wet and dry, tube suction tests, and vacuum
saturation. He concluded that the sand specimens stabilized with lime, fly ash had
shown higher residual UCS (Unconfined Compressive Strength) results than
cement/lime, and class C fly ash stabilized sand soil.

• Mohammad and Saadeh in (2008) also conducted resilient modulus and permanent
deformation tests on base and sub-base materials treated with lime/cement, and
observed an increase in the resilient modulus by 1000 to 1500 percentage for cement
treated soils and 225 to 325% for lime treated soil under identical conditions of 6 psi
confining stress.

Now ……. Will tell you about the research methodology.

Thank you …….., Here is the Methodology to achieve the previously discussed research goals
and it is divided into two steps:

The first one includes the collection and brief study of relevant literature from books, research
papers and via internet.

The second step includes all the practical work required to complete the project, in which the
first step is the collection of sample. In order to prepare different soil samples we will be
collecting soil from different sources and perform different kind of experiments for finding the
effects of different additives on soil. We will use cement, lime, & fly ash as a soil stabilizers and
perform different tests on soil with each of these stabilizers or we can say additives.
For an effective research work we will perform the project related test such as:

• Atterberg Limits (which include Shrinkage limit, Plastic limit & Liquid limit tests)

• Standard Proctor Test

• Modified Proctor Test, &

• California Bearing Ratio (CBR)

This is for what the project is carried out. This research is aimed to improve the characteristics
of the soil and make it capable of carrying load by stabilizing it or to improve the bearing power
of the soil by the use of controlled compaction, proportioning and the addition of suitable
admixture or stabilizer.

Now ...…… will explain the proposed work schedule.

Thank you …...…, This is the Proposed work schedule for our project. According to this we will
start work on our project from 30th January INSHALLAH, and the expected month of completion
is July, 2017.

This is the bar chart of work schedule. We divided the project into total eight (8) phases. This
column shows the starting date of each activity, it is the duration shown in weeks and the last
column shows the expected end date of each activity.

Thank you …… These are the references for our project, which include the research work of
Mohammad, M.D.Kabir & Saadeh, Parker & John Wesley, Bhattacharja, & J.I.Bhatty, Umesha,
S.Dinesh, & Sivapullaiah, and Professor Suksun Horpibulsuk.

INSHALLAH we will try our best to acquire the best possible results and fulfill the Aim or
objectives of the research for which it is carried out.

Thank you, Thank you all for your attention !!! 
