PROBABLE CAUSE AFFIDAVIT

l,Rebecca A Schmuhl, a law enforcement officer with the indiana University Police
Department, being duly sworn upon my oath, state that on or about the 11th day of July,
2019, Dongwook Ko committed a criminal offense. Such belief is based upon the
following:

Summary: On a summer camp student. victim 1, was at the IU Music

practice building (1024 E 3rd St, Bloomington, indiana) practicing her violin in room
#388. An acquaintance of hers, Dongwook K0, (DOB 2/18/2002, 5"2" black hair, brown
eyes) who was a summer camp student the previous year. entered into the room where
she was practicing. Ko lured victim 1 to the fourth floor of the music practice building by
telling herthat her teacher needed to speak to her. Victim one stated this made her
concerned that she had done something wrong so she immediately followed Ko. Victim
1 walked up to the fourth floor with K0. He then told her that her instructor was in

another part of the floor so Victim 1 continued to follow him. Ko lead Victim one to room
453, a locker room. Victim 1 said Ko stood there for a moment then turned around and
threw her against a iocker. pinning her to the tocker with his arm and hand. She began
to scream and attempted to fight him off. Victim 1 said K0 placed his hand over her
mouth and told her to shush. She continuted to scream and kicked him causing him to
fall to the ground. He pulled victim 1 to the ground where they continued to fight. Victim

1 tried to escape but K0 grabbed her by the throat with his hand. She said that he

choked her by applying pressure to her neck causing severe pain and restricting her
from breathing. She said that he choked her for several seconds. Ko over powered
victim 1 and got on top of her where he either pulled out a knife from an unknown
location on his persons or the knife fell out of his clothing and he picked it up. Ko then
began slashing and stabbing victim 1 and she continued to scream. An lU employee,
Ronald Sebben, heard victim 1 screaming and ran to where he heard the screams. He
grabbed K0 and puIled him off victim 1 who ran away. He led K0 downstairs but Ko fled

once they reached the lobby. Officers later took K0 into custody at his residence. K0
and his mother, Jee Yeon Kim, showed officers where the knife was located. Officers
recoved the knife from a tupperware container filled with water, located in the kitchen.
The knife was a TAC Force TF-762 folding knife. which is 4.5 inches when closed.

Ronald Sebben stated that on 07/12/2019 he was in his office on the 4'“ floor of the
Music Addition Building on the Indiana University campus. Sebben said he heard
screaming down the ha" and figured it was kids from the String Academy goofing
around. Sebben said when he heard it a second time he went to check out the situation.
According to Sebben there was a boy and girl in the MA453 locker room. Sebben said
the boy was wrapping his arms around the girl and she was stiII screaming. He said
when he interrupted them. the girl broke away. Sebben said he stopped the the girl for a
second but she had such a look of terror in her eyes, he let her go. Sebben said he
stopped the boy and escorted him downstairs to call the police. Once they were
downstairs for approximately 30 to 4O seconds. Sebben said, the boy fled. Sebben said
he chased the boy back through the building and out the north door. Sebben said he
last saw the boy running south along the east side of the building.

Victim 1 was scared and thought that she was going

stated that during the assauit she
to die. She thought: "Oh my God. This can't be happening to me." Victim 1 said she was
really scared because Ko tried to suffocate her, by clenching her throat reatly hard so
she couldn‘t breath. Victim 1 said she got his hand off but he then took his knife and put
it against her throat. She said she was realiy scared that he was going to kill her. Victim

one said she knocked his hand away. She stated that she thought he was going to put
her in his car and drive her away. Victim 1 said she felt him cut her leg and she became
scared that she was going to bleed to death. Victim 1 said she also felt him pushing on
her mouth really hard and she thought she was going to lose alt her teeth. Victim 1 said
she was scared that no one was ever going to come and it would be to late, then she
got mad until she heard footsteps. At which time she felt complete rekief. Victim 1 said
the moment she was let go she ran out of the room screaming. She tried to think of
where to go and ran to the 3rd floor practice room of a friend. Victim 1 said they were
then helped by some counselors and other academy students. She said they moved to
the 3'“ floor lobby by the eievators to wait for the ambulance crew. Victim 1 said
everytime the stair door or elevator door opened she thought it was Ko returning.

Yeon Kyung Kim, one of the camp counselors. was in the stairwell when Victim 1 came
running down the stairs screaming. Yeon Kyung Kim said Victim 1 was bieeding from
several places and seemed frantic. Yeon Kyung Kim said she called 911 and stayed
with Victim 1 until help arrived.

LV, Victim 1's friend and roommate. was practicing in room 387 next to Victim 1's
practice room. LV said she heard screaming, then Victim 1 ran into the room. LV said
Victim 1 seemed nervous, stressed out, and was frantically running around. Victim 1
yelled for help and stated that K0 had attacked her. LV said Victim 1 was bteeding from
the arms and hands. Victim 1 and LV then ran out of the room and found some of the
counselors. LV said Victim 1 kept thinking that K0 was going to return and attack her.
LV said she also was fearful the K0 would return.

Victim 1 was transported to the hospital by ambulance. On-scene EMTs stated that they

observed approximately 10 cuts all over Victim 1‘s body. At the hospital the doctor who
treated Victim 1 stated that she sutured three differenct larger cuts on Victim1‘s body:
one larger cut to her right caIf and two larger cuts on her left hand. There was also a
cut on the back of her right upper arm that was taped closed with strips. Victim 1 stated
that her left hand is her "violin hand". When spoke with Victim 1 0n 07/13/2019

observed bandages on her Ieft hand, suturing on her right calf, a cut on her right upper
arm (held together with small adhesive strips, and numerous smaller cuts on her arms
and legs.

Det. Vanleeuwen and I observed the scene. We located blood in the locker room
(#453), in the 4'“ floor hallway. on the SE stairwell door, in the SE stairwell, on the 3'“

floor SE staitwell door. in the 3’“ floor hallway and outside room 387.

Jee Yeon Kim stated to Det. Sung that on 07/19/2019 K0 did not seem upset. She
stated that he had been texting a friend and he told her that he was going to meet the
friend at the Music Addition and then get lunch around 12:00 PM. He drove away from
the residence in the Land Rover. Jee Yeon Kim said Ko catled her after the incident at
the music school. She said Ko seemed upset and kept telling her, “I don‘t know what l

did.” and “I may have hurt her." Kim stated that when Ko returned to the house he had

blood on his arms and clothing. She saw small cuts on his arms and believed the blood
to be his at the time. K0 told his mother that he was pulling a prank on a girl. He told
the girl to follow him. He started to shush her by placing his hand on her mouth to keep
her quiet. The girl started to scream. He said he then choked her. Jee Yeon Kim stated
that Ko told her he started to wrestle around with the girl and the knife fell out of his
pocket. After the wrestling, the girl ran away and K0 returned home. Jee Yeon Kim
asked K0 what he used because of all the blood on his clothes. Ko led her into the
garage. In a Kleenex Box Jee Yeon Kim saw Ko’s smal! foldable knife. He then placed
the knife in a clear Tupperware container in the kitchen containing a few inches of
water. Jee Yeon Kim then told K0 to change clothes.

Security video from Ko‘s residence show him leaving the residence at 9:26 AM and
returning at 10:10 AM.

Victim 1 is 13 yeas of age and Kc is 17 years of age.

These events occurred in Bloomington. Monroe County, Indiana.
