Objectives:
1. Determine the open circuit voltage per phase of the alternator
2. Determine the short circuit current per phase of the alternator
Introduction:
An Alternator is an electrical device or in another terms is alternating generator it
converts mechanical energy to mechanical energy. It uses a rotating magnetic field with a
stationary armature.
Alternator is used in modern automobiles to charge the battery and to power the electrical
system when its engine is running.

Materials:
Alternator
Induction Motor (1/4HP, 220V, 7050rpm)
Pump Belt
12 volts uncharged battery
Alligator clip

1. Determine the frequency of the currents in the rotor of a 60 cycle, 6 pole induction motor that is
its rotor speed is 1164 rpm
Solutions:

( )( )
2. A no-load test and a block rotor test are made on a 220V, 25hz,7.5Hp, 750rpm, 3-phase wound
rotor induction motor. The transformation ratio of the rotor is 3.32. for a slip of 0.06 determine
the motor output?
Solutions:
Motor output=[3(18.4^2)(6.26)]-150=0.972
3. As an example of speed obtainable with two induction motor having different number of poles
consider two 60 cycle motors, one having 4 and the other is 20 poles. The following synchronous
speed are
4-poles: 1800rpm
20-poles: 360rpm
Determine the slips of both and the rotor speed of the 4 pole induction motor.
Solutions:

( )( ) -450rpm

4. A 40hp, 230 volts, 8-pole, 25hz three phase induction motor is running at 355rpm at rated load.
The torque lost by friction is 24N.m. if the stator losses amount to 1000W, evaluate the efficiency
of the motor at this load.
