Vanessa: A Triple Offset Valve for Critical

Applications

Introduction

For centuries linear movement valves such as gate and globe have been used in process
isolation service.
Linear movement valves are valves in which a reciprocating stem pushes a wedge/plug
into a seat to obtain shut-off. Among linear valves, the gate valve is the typical isolation
valve, whereas the globe valve is mainly used for throttling purposes.

In the past four decades, there has been a substantial increase in the use of soft-seated
“rotary valves” (i.e. ball & butterfly) for process application. The soft seated valve has
gained popularity because it seemingly can provide tighter shut-off, especially when new,
due to its soft seal material. Additionally, the rotary valves offers lower weight, compact
topwork, ease to automate, more reliable stem seal.

In recent years users have begun to experience a sizeable limitation of conventional soft
seated rotary valves as result of the sealing system and geometry employed. The soft seal
member in conventional rotary valves has both pressure and temperature limitations far
beyond those expressed in suppliers literature. In addition, conventional designs require
that a metal sealing component rubs the soft seal member during the stroke of the valve.
This rubbing combined with solid particles in the flow stream (which are always present)
cuts or tears the soft seal.

Vanessa is an all-metal unique sealing design that overcomes the above limitations while
retaining the advantages of a quarter turn valve. Our product is an ideal alternative to gate,
ball and globe valves for isolation and control for most process applications.

Vanessa has the unique combination of the following features:

METAL SEATED BIDIRECTIONAL ZERO LEAKAGE

INHERENTLY FIRESAFE

These features are provided by:

NON-RUBBING ROTATION
SEALING MECHANISM DESCRIPTION

In order to ensure tight shut-off, in a quarter turn valve design, Vanessa developed a
unique valve geometry and a revolutionary sealing principle. This geometry provides:

NON-RUBBING ROTATION

TORQUE GENERATED SEAL

SEAL RING DESIGNED FOR UNIFORM SEAL CONTACT

To accomplish this design innovation, Vanessa utilized a double offset (eccentric) shaft
together with an offset conical seat to achieve the proper “camming” action of the disc into
the seat. This particular design of the “camming” keeps the entire seal ring clear of the
seat except at the final shut-off position. This provides for 90° NON RUBBING ROTATION.
(See Figure 1).

In addition to the three offsets, each of which had to be specifically chosen, Vanessa
selected a cone angle which would allow the seal ring to touch the seat with a contact
angle which was both uniform around its circumference and one which would allow a slight
amount of wedging.

With the valve in the closed position and the seal ring in contact with the seat, a torque is
applied to the shaft.
Figure 2 shows the direction of movement of two points of the seal ring along the major
axis of the seat. The angle between this direction of movement and the tangent to the seat
is called “approach” or “contact angle” and is the angle that the seal generates when it
touches the seat when closing or leaving the seat when opening. If this angle is zero, the
seal slides on the seat and is not pressed against. But if the angle is positive, sealing
forces are developed between the sealing surfaces proportional to the applied torque.

An almost uniform positive contact angle is required all along the seat to obtain a tight
shut-off. It is interesting to note the comparison with the gate and globe valves. With a gate
or globe, the force applied to the stem presses two conical sealing surfaces together. The
only difference is the value of the contact angle, as can be seen from Figure 3. This angle
is very small for the gate, (typically between 4° & 6°), with high wedging effect but with

SERIES 30,000

some risk of jamming especially in presence of temperature. The approach angle is much
higher in the globe valve (typically above 20°), where there is no risk of jamming, but much
bigger forces are required for the shut-off.
(Figure 3). Globe valves in fact are usually chosen for control and not for isolation.

The Vanessa contact angles of 10-12° can be considered an optimization of these two
designs. The angle is high enough to avoid jamming but low enough to generate a slight
amount of wedging.
(Figure 2)
The seal ring, secured but not locked in the disc, has been provided with radial freedom of
movement. The unusual shape of the seal ring identifies its primary characteristic:
flexibility. (See Figure 4)

The sealing forces generated by the torque during seating uniformly compresses the seal
ring around its entire circumference, thereby creating a spring or resilient member. This
spring effect provides for ZERO LEAKAGE shut-off in both directions.

The flexibility of the seal ring also allows for the valve body and disc to expand or contract
relative to each other without the risk of jamming while maintaining tight shut-off. Behind
the seal ring there is a spiral wound gasket to prevent leakage around the seal.

Since Vanessa shut-off ability is generated by the torque applied to the shaft (TORQUE
SEATED) the valve retains its shut-off independent of the line pressure. Being torque
seated, there is no mechanical stopper which could be misadjusted. The valve seat is the
mechanical stop in the close direction and is therefore impossible for the disc to go
through the seat.

VALVE DESCRIPTION

Body

The Vanessa Series 30,000 was designed for both high temperature and high pressure
applications. Being a true process valve, Vanessa standardized on the conventional
double flanged body design. Also manufactured are: wafer, lug and butt-weld body
designs.

The double flanged valve is the Vanessa standard because it is the most preferred body
configuration by process plant operating personnel.

Main benefits

Double flanged to make installation & maintenance much easier by eliminating most of the
threaded flange cap screws required on conventional lug pattern valves.

Double flange valves allow piping stresses to be evenly distributed between flange
components rather than concentrated in the pipe flange as is the case with the relatively
rigid design of lug pattern valves.

Weight is comparable to conventional single flange lug design.

Wall thickness is greater than ANSI design requirements for gate valves. The valve body is
stiffer than the pipe. When designing a hot pipe, the engineer has to be concerned only
with his/her pipe, not with our valve. This is not the case with other types of valves such as
gate or other body styles.

Flanged valves are imperative in all firesafe applications due to flange bolt stretching
generating flange leaks during a fire.

Face to face dimensions are in accordance with ISO standards in the double flanged
“short” version and ASME B16.10 for the “long” body style.

Gate & Ball valve can be easily replaced by Vanessa double flanged “long” without the
need of spool pieces.

Thrust bearing

The valve body has a thrust bearing (trunion) support. The thrust bearing is connected to
the bottom of the shaft and aligns the disc relative to the seat.

Main benefits

Replaceable, superior design, coupled with the compensating ability of the sealing system,
allows tight shut-off for high numbers of cycles.

Packing

Vanessa incorporates an adjustable packing system designed to maintain the shaft sealing
in service. This packing allows the valve to work throughout the years always being in

accordance with the strict sealing standards which are nowadays required on valve
applications.

The Vanessa standard packing system consists of a braided packing as top and bottom
rings, and three or more internal dye formed rings for each packing group. This packing
system has been tested according to the Vanessa Research and Development program,
and it has been verified throughout various type approval tests, dedicated to evaluate both
the valve and the packing performances in accordance with the Fugitive Emissions
detection criteria.

Shaft

The shaft is a solid 1 piece shaft NOT two (2) stub shafts as is typical for many other
quarter turn valves. This 1 piece shaft design increases the rigidity of the disc as it
minimizes shaft deflection. This added rigidity keeps seat and seal wear to a minimum and
maintains optimum sealing while substantially adding to the safety factor of the shaft.
The shaft is oversized to allow for the use of virtually all shaft materials as well as
oversized shaft bearings, pins and keys.

The disc is secured to the shaft with keys to allow for a better torque transmission.

Main benefits

1 piece solid shaft (never stubs shafts).

Largest diameter shaft in ¼ turn valves for equivalent torque.

Better choice of materials and larger bearings & keys than competitive design.

Shaft to disc hubs located as close to bearings as possible to minimize bending.

Seat

All carbon steel and stainless steel valves have a Stellite® grade 21 weld overlay. Stellite®
grade 21 seat has been introduced since a very long time as a standard for all sizes.

This will substantially increase the life expectancy of the valve. The seat Stellite® grade 21
weld overlay is usually performed by means of welding robot. It is obvious that quality and
quality consistency of this process is not comparable with manual weld deposit sometime
present in competitors valves.

The seat is machined with a raised conical shape. By raising the sealing face of the seat,
solids are less likely to accumulate there.

The body seat is conical in form with the apex of the cone oriented substantially off center
from the centerline of the valve. Therefore, the seating surface is elliptical. By offsetting the
conical seat, all seal to seat rubbing has been eliminated during the stroke of the valve.

Disc

The disc is merely a retainer for the disc seal (seal ring) and it is manufactured in the same
material as the body.
In a tight shut-off metal seated valve, the body, disc, disc seal and shaft should be
designed to have compatible coefficients of expansion.

For example austenitic stainless (300 series) has a substantially different coefficient of
expansion from carbon steel (martensitic and ferritic) and therefore should not be used in
close tolerance operating system (like a valve) in the presence of temperature changes.
The disc has a double eccentric shaft, carries the seal ring, secured by a retaining flange.

Seal ring

The primary sealing member is the seal ring (disc seal). Located in the disc, its unique
geometry provides both radial flexibility and resiliency to the seal system.
The seal ring is supplied as a minimum in Duplex Stainless steel (laminated) suitable for
several applications.

Solid Seal Rings are always offered by Vanessa for high pressure (ASME class 900 and
above), high temperature, cryogenic and/or in all application where solids may be present
in the medium.
Tight shut off performance are identical in Vanessa valves with both laminated and solid
seal rings.
