PPL 2O: SUMMATIVE EVALUATION 30% of final mark

Section I: Active Living/Physical Activity (12%)

This portion consists of three parts:
Part 1: Teacher Evaluation
During the summative period, your teacher will be assessing and recording information
on a daily basis in order to evaluate your performance based on the criteria established
on the Colonel By Participation Rubric (posted in the gym hallway).

Part 2: Self-Evaluation
You will evaluate your participation using the rubric provided to you in class. Students
should be prepared to support their self-evaluation with concrete examples.

Part 3: Safe Participation

You will be required to describe how you participate safely in class by providing
concrete examples in a short written text. You must also explain how your safe
practices help minimize the risk of injury to you and your peers.

Section II: Healthy Living/Living Skills (14%)

The major theme for this strand is choices. You have learned information and skills
that should help you make informed choices regarding your sexuality, substance use,
and healthy eating.

Your assignment is to produce a piece of original work (this may be a reflection, a

collage, a poem, a monologue, a painting, a video, etc.) that shows the following:
- the choices that you’ve made regarding sexuality, substance use, and healthy
eating
- the reasons for making your choices relating to these areas
- the factors that influence you personally when making decisions (i.e. peers, school,
media, ads, religion, culture, etc.)
- the decision-making process that you follow when making decisions
- a reflection of who you are and how you became that person

Along with your original work, you must submit a one-page (Arial or similar 12 pt. font,
double-spaced) document that explains your work.
The original works will be presented to the class anytime after April 18.

Section III: Fitness (4%)

Part 1: Research Article

You will find one article (1000 words minimum) from the print media (an actual
magazine, journal, book, etc., NOT the internet edition of the magazine, etc.) relating to
personal or societal fitness. Write a 250-word summary/reflection for your article,
explaining how the material relates to your life, present or future. You must hand in
the article (or a copy thereof) with your summary.

5. The “Me” Paradigm.
Presenters often scan a table or graphic directly from their existing print corporate material and include it in
their slide show presentations. The results are almost always sub-optimal. Print visuals are usually meant to be
seen from 8-12 inches rather than viewed from several feet. Typically, they are too small, too detailed and too
textual for an effective visual presentation. The same is true for font size; 12 point font is adequate when the
text is in front of you. In a slideshow, aim for a minimum of 40 point font. Remember the audience and move
the circle from “me” to “we.” Make certain all elements of any particular slide are large enough to be easily
seen. Size really does matter.
6. Reading.
An oral presentation should focus on interactive speaking and listening, not reading by the speaker or the
audience. The demands of spoken and written language differ significantly. Spoken language is shorter, less
formal and more direct. Reading text ruins a presentation. A related point has to do with handouts for the
audience. One of your goals as a presenter is to capture and hold the audience’s attention. If you distribute
materials before your presentation, your audience will be reading the handouts rather than listening to you.
Often, parts of an effective presentation depend on creating suspense to engage the audience. If the audience
can read everything you’re going to say, that element is lost.
7. Faith in Technology.
You never know when an equipment malfunction or incompatible interfaces will force you to give your
presentation on another computer. Be prepared by having a back-up of your presentation on a CD-ROM.
Better yet is a compact-flash memory card with an adapter for the PCMCIA slot in your notebook. With it,
you can still make last-minute changes. It’s also a good idea to prepare a few color transparencies of your key
slides. In the worst-case scenario, none of the technology works and you have no visuals to present. You
should still be able to give an excellent presentation if you focus on the message. Always familiarize yourself
with the presentation, practice it and be ready to engage the audience regardless of the technology that is
available. It’s almost a lost art.
For my healthy living/living styles gym summative, I decided to create a collage representing all my choices

in life. I thought it would be the most creative way for me to represent all my choices in a visual way. I

included pictures of all my different choices in healthy eating, substance use and sexuality around a blank

picture of me. I decided to use cartoon pictures to present objects and ideas, as they were easier to find and

looks better in a collage. I also included the factors influencing my choices in the outer part of the collage.

In every-day choices that I make, I choose to not only eat healthy but also to snack once in a while. In the

collage, there are images of fast food, chips and candy but also a picture of fruits and vegetables. I think that a

balance of nutrition is the best way to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

In sexuality, I represented my choices with a condom for contraception and a picture of a boy and a girl. This

represents my sexual choices in life.

Lastly, but most importantly, are my choices regarding substance abuse. I have put no smoking, alcohol and

no drug signs in my collage. I choose not only to not take drugs, but also to not smoke or drink alcohol.

I have several reasons for making these choices, but the biggest one would have to be school work. It is very

important to me to succeed in school; in order to do so I have made these choices. Another reason that I made

these choices is to keep a healthy lifestyle. I would like to live to the fullest so I try to stay healthy as much as

I can.

In the collage, I represented the factors that influence me to make these decisions around me. The most

important factor would have to be school. I put pictures of books and a school bus to represent that. Also,

another important factor would be peers. I choose friends that do not make unhealthy choices and who are
also supportive of my choices. The last big factor is my parents. Not only do they understand what’s best for

me, they also support me in my decisions and choices.

In my decision making process, I like to think things slowly and weigh the pros and cons of each action.

Therefore, my decision making process is often a cool and collected decision. I like to make choices that have

long term benefits.

For this summative assignment, I had a lot of fun when creating the collage because it not only allowed me to

show my creative side but it was also fun thinking of the different ways to represent my choices. However, if I

were to do this assignment again, I might try to make a video instead.
