Boyle U.S. House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515 Dear Representative Boyle: ‘Thank you for your letter inquiting about the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) policies for the adoption of cats, dogs, and primates no longer needed for intramural research. ‘The National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have developed this collaborative response to address your inquiry. We appreciate hearing your concems regarding the welfare of animals supported by NIH, CDC, and FDA and assure you that our agencies continue to work towards arcanging for adoption or relocation of these HHS-supported cats, dogs, and primates that were previously used in research. We are supportive of the adoption of cats, dogs, and primates when relocation is safe and medically appropriate. In caring for and determining the appropriate relocation or adoption protocol for each animal in our care, our respective agencies work closely with accredited, responsible animal care organizations, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Your letter requests specific information about policies and procedures for the adoption and retirement of cats, dogs, and primates no longer needed in intramural research. Please find this, information, specific to each of our agencies, below.
