HOW TO CARRY OUT AN HOUR OF DEVOTION DAILY

The following suggestion is simply a basic model to help you develop your
own devotional plan ultimately. It is not a rigid model but it is flexible and
it allows the Spirit of God to direct us.

For a start, to assist you in developing personal discipline, I propose that you
follow the model step-by-step. The time allocation for each slot eventually
will be decided by you based on your time availability.

I. PRAISE AND WORSHIP

By beginning your devotions with praise and worship, it directs us to focus on

God. Consequently, we will become God-conscious and God-centred. It
brings awareness and reminds us that God is with us. It is also an act of faith
(Heb 11:6) which will help us enter into God’s presence to look into His
Holiness and gaze into His loveliness where the things around us (trails,
weights, sorrows, hurts, grief, etc) becomes shadows in the light of Him.

Principle: Praise and Worship helps us to establish a Communication Link

with God. (Tuning in to God’s frequency). Ps 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I
am God….”
II. WAITING ON GOD
Ps 139:23, 24 – “Search me, O God,
Application (How?): After you have worshipped the Lord, just quieten and know my heart; test me and
yourself (keeping quiet – not even praying in tongues or whispering). know my anxious thoughts. See if

and lead me in the way
Principle: Allow the Spirit of God to reveal to us areas in our lives that He is everlasting.”
not pleased with or areas that He wants us to improve on. Also, the Spirit
can reveal to us unresolved problems or relationship.

III. CONFESSION
1 Jn 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he

us our sins and purify us from all
Begin to ask God to forgive you for areas the Spirit has revealed to you and unrighteousness.”
note down actions that God wants us to carry out to bring restoration,
reconciliation etc.

IV. LISTENING
After you have made confessions and repented, keep still for a while to see
if the Spirit of God has anything to say to you.

During this time, the Spirit may lead us a particular passage of our devotion
materials or Scripture in the Bible or show us a picture or bring something to
mind etc.

V. READING THE BIBLE AND DEVOTIONAL MATERIALS materials:
1. Our Daily Bread
2. Everyday with Jesus

on it. Once you come across a verse that strikes you, do not proceed on.

VI. MEDITATION AND JOURNALLING

To meditate is simply to contemplate, ponder and think. To journal, is to
write down thoughts and action plan that God has put in your heart.

Application (How?): Being to ponder on the verse(s) and ask God to reveal
to you what He is wanting to tell you. Ask yourself how the verse can be
applicable. Write down what you feel God is telling you in your journal book.

Principle: As we meditate on His Word, God may give us a word of Question:

encouragement, exhortation or comfort. God can also speak to us from His What is the difference between
Word. The process of meditation is likened onto the act of chewing and Christian meditation and New Age or
digesting the food where our strength, vitality and energy is derived from it. Eastern Mysticism type of
meditation?
Journalling helps to cement and reinforce what God is saying and it is a
useful reflection tool to see how God has lead us in the past weeks and
months.

VII. PETITION
After digesting the Word of God, we should spend some time in prayer for
ourselves depending on what the Spirit of God is saying to us or maybe it is a
deeper work He wants to accomplish in us.

VIII. THANKSGIVING
Close your devotion with songs of praise and thanksgiving for what God has
done or for the things He has revealed to you or the Word of encouragement
He has given you.

IX. PROPOSED TIME ALLOCATION Alternative:

You may combine some of the steps
1. Praise and Worship 10 minutes together if you do not have the
enough time.
2. Waiting on God 5 minutes Eg.
3. Confession 5 minutes
4. Listening 5 minutes 1. Praise and Worship/ 10 mins
5. Reading the Bible/Devotional Materials 15 minutes Waiting/Confession
2. Reading/Meditation/ 15 mins
6. Meditation/Journalling 10 minutes Journalling
7. Petition 5 minutes 3 Prayer and Petition 5 mins
8. Thanksgiving 5 minutes Total 30 mins
Total 60 minutes

CONCLUSION
Personally, I always feel that devotion is a time where we spend with God to
foster a more intimate relationship. It is an occasion where we give God our
whole-hearted attention. As such, I do not recommend that you carry out
intercession or thorough (in depth) study during this time. Instead, we
should set aside another time for intercession and in-depth Bible study
separately.
