GENERAL INFORMATION

The Polytechnic of Požega has been

founded pursuant to Decision of the
Government of the Republic of
Croatia of 21 May 1998 as a public
school of higher education (Official
Gazette nr. 75/98).
Polytechnic is located in the center of
Požega in the spacious Požega valley
surrounded by the ovally arranged
wreath of the ancient mountain Psu nj,
Papuk, Krndija, Dilj and Požeška
Gora. Požega is a town in Croatia, the
seat of Požega-Slavonia County and
Požega Diocese. Požega and its
surroundings denies the two most
common stereotypes about eastern Croatia. The hills and the real mountains, more than
plains, determine the appearance, characteristics and character of Požega. The streets of

the town go deep into the slopes of Mount Požeško -goranska, wind up with numerous
streams and it is almost impossible to find any road that is cut at right ang les. The
dynamics of the relief and the ground floor are permeated with the burning and thick past
of Požega. Organisational elements of the Polytechnic of Požega are its departments. A
department, acting as the organisational element of the Polytechnic, i s the basic element
in performance of studies, professional and scientific work, and each one may establish
one or more studies with or without specialisations. Studies are organisational elements
within the departments. The Polytechnic of Požega performs five professional studies
(Commerce, Accounting, Administration, Food Technology, and Viticulture -Oenology-
Pomology) and one specialist professional graduate study (Commerce). A major emphasis
is placed on practical training in performance of the professional studies.

3
Practical training of students attending the professional
study of Viticulture-Oenology-Pomology is organised
within an own teaching facility (5.5 hectares of
perennial vineyards, winemaking premises and
equipment, wine cellar, wine laboratory, wine tasting
hall). This study programme is deficient in terms of lack
of own facilities needed to perform practical training in
the field of pomology. The specified deficit is being
addressed through purchase of 2.3 hectares of land and
planting of a perennial orchard. The Polytechnic plans
to complement the orchard with fruit processing
(processing and drying facilities) and food storage
facilities, representing high quality bases for
performance of the practical training of the students of
Food Technology. Students attending other professional
studies undergo practical training within business
entities with which the Polytechnic has cooperation
agreements in place (270 cooperation agreements in force). Total surface area of the
Polytechnic of Požega intended for teaching (lecture halls, laboratories, wine cellar)
amounts to 1072 m2. Comparing the above area size to the total number of enrolled
students, currently numbering 1530, indicates an average of 0.70 m2 of usable area per
student. If sports grounds are added to the figure, the total surface area intended for
teaching amounts to 1.64 m2 per student. The above points to a conclusion that the
Polytechnic complies with the standards requirements of the Ordinance on accreditation
contents and conditions for issuing of accreditations for performance of higher education
activities, performance of study programmes and reaccreditation of higher education
institutions. The above averages do not include areas for performance of practical
training used by the Department of Agriculture, consisting of 5.5 hectares of perennial
vineyards owned by the Polytechnic.

4
The main advantages of the infrastructural potential of the Polytechnic lie in full
compliance with present needs of the institution and the d efined standards. Another
advantage of the material capacities of the Polytechnic of Požega is high -quality
equipment provided in practical training areas (wine laboratory, the wine cellar and the
vineyard) as well as high -quality equipment of teaching areas and offices (cl assrooms,
IT classroom, offices). Current availability
of teacher offices is completely satisfactory
in respect of needs of the Polytechnic and
the teachers. At this time, there ar e 16
teacher offices; therefore an average office
is occupied by two teachers. Areas used for
work of the professional services (Student
service, Secretary’s office, Accounting, IT
service, Library) also have satisfactory
surface size and equipment levels. An
additional outstanding advantage is
possession of a large quantity of pr imary
and auxiliary literature in the library. In the past, a significant step was taken in terms of
increase of collection of the library. Based on regular analyses of mandatory literature
availability, teaching materials needed for all courses is continu ously purchased.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Professional Study Of Accounting

A pronounced compatibility of courses and learning outcomes was observed in a

comparison of Finnish and Norwegian studies with the professional study of Accounting.
A high level of compatibility was also observed in comparison with a professional study
of the Institute of Technology
Blanchardstown in Blanchardstown,
Dublin, but the Dublin-based study
pays more attention to foreign
languages, but it entails is no
professional training course. Upon
completion of the study, its students
attain the grade of BSc (Econ. & Bus.
Adm.) in Accounting. The study lasts
for 3 years and yields 180 ECTS
credits. Current topics in the fields of
accounting, auditing and finances are
presented by the foremost Croatian
experts within a seminar organised by
the Polytechnic and the Association of
Accountants and Financial Professionals of Požega. Its objective is to bring the
accountants together and create a brand of Croatian accountant recognisable in Europ e.
The professional study of Accounting is adapted to the International educational
standards defined by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). The
International educational standards (IES) specify knowledge, skills and ethical values
which institutions of professional education should implement into their educational
programmes in order to develop the profession of accounting as a key development factor
in strong, long-lasting organisations, financial markets and the global economy.

Professional Study Of Commerce

The professional study of Commerce is comparable to similar studies in the European

Union member states (Universita Bocconi, Milan: Business and Economics, Department
of Economics; Graduate School of Business Economics: Higher School of International
Commerce and Finance, Warsaw; Logistics and International Trade, Wittenborg
University of Applied Sciences, Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. Courses of mathematics,
statistics, basic economics, macroeconomics, finances, and accounting are taug ht in the
first year and a part of the second year of the undergraduate studies of the specified
institutions, as well as the professional study of Commerce, in order to provide their
students with the basic knowledge required to master the selected study. In the remainder
of the second year and in the third year of the studies, the students attain professional
knowledge in the fields of commerce business, logistic processes, procurement and sales,

Professional Study Of Administration

Learning outcomes of the professional study of Administration at the Polytechnic of

Požega are comparable to renowned European institutions of higher education. The need
to educate civil servants has been long recognised in developed European countries. Mo st
continental West European countries have established administration education systems
after the 1960s. A leading role in those processes
was assumed by Germany and France because of
their traditional understanding of administrative
work as a lifelong career. French National
administration school – ENA (École nationale
d'administration) and German Speyer higher
education school for administrative sciences
(Deutsche Hochschule für
Verwaltungswissenschaften Speyer) are the most
famous scientific-research and educational centres
directly related to the central government
administration, performing public administration
training programmes. Today, numerous university graduate (postgraduate) public
administration programmes are performed in absolutely every wes tern European country.
They are primarily performed at universities and, in addition, at diverse institutions such
as polytechnics, higher education institutions and centres (e.g. French regional centres
for education of administrative clerks or German pro fessional schools of public
administration) and similar. The above foreign institutions specifically research
application of individual institutions of administrative law, application of corresponding
work methods in public administration and interpretatio n of knowledge of the basic
economics and administration economics in their programmes.

MEALS

Few of Croatian regions are so rich in recipes. The famous Slavonian cuisine has a touch
of Dalmatia, Zagorje, Lika and some European cuisines. Many occasions in the lives of
the Slavonians have called for great celebrations. So they came up with specific dishes
for harvests, births, engagements, weddings, sacral holidays
(Christmas, Easter, Shrove) or the popular Slavonian pig -
slaughter days. Dishes prepared according to traditional
recipes are particularly popular: cobanac, fish stew, chicken
stew and many others. They normally prepare vegetables in
the form of stew with paprika. Eve ry true Slavonian will
treat you to some homemade kulen, homemade ham, smoked
sausages and other typical delicacies in their home. Fish
stew has a special place among the numerous Slavonian
specialties. River fish is particularly in demand in Slavonia. Esp ecially carp on a spit,
roasted over open fire, or catfish in corn flour served with bean salad with fresh onions
and pumpkinseed oil. These dishes are perfectly accompanied by one of the Graševina
wines from Slavonian cellars. Famous Slavonian wines and w ines made by small
producers are equally represented in the offer.
Facility for organised meals of the students is located within the Polytechnic site, and it
seats 64 and has surface area of 60 m2. Considering the large number of full -time students
and students living outside Požega, the need for a larger facility is unquestionable. The
right to organised meals is extended to all the full -time students in possession of a student
identification card and their meals are substantially cheaper due to a high r ate of subsidy
of the cost of meals. According to a new ordinance which became effective on 1 October
2013, the price of a meal is 22,60 Kuna,
but the students pay 6,50 Kuna. The rest
of the cost is subsidised by the Ministry
of Science, Education and Spor ts
(MSES). The facility is also used by the
employees of the Polytechnic and the
Student Centre, who are charged 15
Kuna for a meal because they do not use
the student identification cards. The
student restaurant in Požega is open
from 8 a.m. till 8 p.m. It serves breakfast
(8 - 11 a.m.), lunch (11.30 a.m. - 2.30
p.m.) and dinner (4 - 8 p.m.). The
students have the right to a full meal consisting of up to five courses: a soup, a main
course, a side dish, a salad and a d esert. Student feedback provided in the meetings with
their mentors indicates dissatisfaction with range of the food and lack of fruits and
vegetables. The students are given an option of eating in restaurants in the city of Požega
where they are offered meals at affordable prices and a list of the restaurants with
corresponding contact information is provided in the Student Guide. An expansion and
adaptation of the student restaurant at the Polytechnic of Požega is planned. It is believed
that its modified infrastructure, range of offer and staff shall set a high standard and
satisfy needs of the students and all its users.
