Philippine Literature during Post War Period

 Post War Period


 It is a period in Philippine History that started in 1945 (the time when the Japan
surrender to the U.S) until 1970.
 It is also known as a "Recovering Era"

 Philippine Literature
 It is the transitional period in Philippine Literature from the American Style to the
Modern Style
 Filipinos, at this time, learned how to express themselves more confidently.
 Writers during the post-war years were inspired by American school and college
teachers, and were able to borrow their techniques, achieving greater mastery in the
English language.
 During this period, Filipinos began teaching Philippine literature as a subject at college
level.
 This period is a productive time for Philippine authors.

 Characteristics of Philippine Literature


o Romanticism - -literary works that originated from Europe toward the end of 18th
century known as “Romantic Era”, emphasizing inspiration, subjectivity, and the primacy
of the individual
o Nationalism - -an ideology in which nationality is a category by which human define
themselves
o Nature - -nature writing is nonfiction or fiction prose of poetry about the natural
environment
o Expression of Feelings --literary authors have the opportunity to present their culture,
values, and ideas to others in a way that is not confrontational
 Filipino Writers in the Post War Period
o Macario Pineda (1912 – 1950)
 He wrote “Ginto ng Makiling” in 1946.
 It was the first Philippine literary work published after World War II.
 He also wrote “Love in the Rice Fields and Other Short Stories”.
o Stevan Javellana (1918 – 1977)
 He is a Filipino novelist and short-story writer in the English language
 He is also known as Esteban Javellana.
 He published his work “Without Seeing the Dawn” which is about his
experiences during World War II.
o N.V.M. Gonzales (1915 – 1999)
 Filipino novelist, short story writer, essayist and poet
 Conferred as the National Artist of the Philippines for Literature in 1997.
 He published his work “A Season of Grace”
