Today

Ciro builds a bridge between these two working methodologies,

where the hand woven cane part of the seat joins the machine
manufactured wooden and metal element. The weaving forms
a small percentage of the stool, but plays several significant
roles like aesthetics, comfort, holding the seat etc. and
encouraging craftsmanship in the right way!

We live in the age of mass-production, which standardizes

products and has its advantages like consistency, efficiency,
cost reduction and the lead time. It has indeed transformed
society in a major way. We feel the fading prominence of
handcrafted goods should be brought back to light and hold
more relevance in today’s world. The amount of passion,
mastery and attention to detail imprinted in the craftsman’s
creation weaves a strong story behind the product, a story
that’s unique and worth sharing.

The combination of the materials paved the way for deriving

the form of the stool. The stool consists of four components,
the Aluminium casted frame, cane, a wooden disc and legs.
The frame and the wooden disc are woven with cane by the
local craftsmen to create the seat. The radial cane weaving

Inspiration Process
The Reo-Chair - The steel sunflower blooms out of the
stone bud that sits in the garden. The robust seat was
thought out to be an extension at the grounds of a building
with conventional construction materials such as concrete
and steel. Yet the challenge remained to convert the
robustness of the materials to a more pleasing and gentle
aesthetics.

The circular form of the seat took away the conventional

forms that are expected from such materials, at the same
time the colors added the value addition. Steel rods are
bent individually at particular angles and shape to suit
ergonomics of a comfortable seat. These rods are placed in
the hollow concrete base for a simple outdoor garden chair.
Visually heavy that looks immobile is mere 8 Kilos for a
single person to lift on his/her own.

14 15
Mold
The mold used earlier had its own limitations, one
of them was the difficulty of releasing the mold after
the rods were welded, and so the mold had to be
demolished. This experimentation helped us generate
a brief of designing a mold, from which we were able to
produce multiple chair forms. The same mold was first
made of out of Timber and plywood, as we had these
materials in abundance. Also, before going forward with
the development of a metal mold, we wanted to have a
proof of concept. Below are the few images of the same.

The inspiration of working with recycled plastic came from

a forum called Precious plastic community. Dave hakkens, Heating Elements
the founder of precious plastic, introduced DIY machines
for reprocessing plastics. This led us to experimenting
with melting waste plastic products in the domestic ovens.
Limitations with the DIY machines were the size. The
whole awareness of using recycled plastics into day to day
products, and we took this as a challenge to slowly help
establish the relation and acceptance of the material with
the people. Acceptance of such recycled materials into our
daily lives might be a step in pushing the smaller dominos
for a gradual, but bigger change and we wanted to be a part
of this change.

The initial proposal to Godrej were two types of Heat

press. First was Conduction based oven and second was The heat press machine was developed in conjunction

Brief
The project is a collaboration with a company called
Annapoorna Industrial corporation, based in New Delhi,
India. The workstation that was designed earlier had its
own limitations and issues. One of them was the central
wire manager and the hassle of removing the wooden
piece to access the charging ports. The scenario is
shown in the image below.

This problem was simply solved by adding a soft sliding

channel, which was part of the main workstation metal
body. The user can simply slide the top to access the
charging ports. Other issues that were catered were
Flat pack & easy assembly and add on attachments like
drawers and privacy screens.

The project is in the stage of prototype development.

Process
The Noor Chair consists of three parts; the shell, the
frame and the legs. The Frame and the legs are made
up of recycled Aluminum, which uses 5% of the energy
required to extract and process the new Aluminum. The
shell is made up of PET bottle shredded Felt, which
is again a material which allows efficient methods of
reusing the waste plastic around. This can prove to be
very economical when it comes to manufacturing the
product.

The shell and the frame gets attached with the help of
an epoxy glue layer usually used in the automobile
sector. The project is still at a very initial level, and aren’t
sure if the same detail will work without a proof
of concept.

ergonomics, material, the process and fine
tuning the design details for the ease of
assembly and material manufacturing. The
project is at standstill and are looking for a
senior mentor for guidance.
