PART B [Application and Analysis]

INSTRUCTIONS
Part B contains THREE questions. Answer TWO questions.
All final answer units must be in SI
1 psi = 47.880259 Pa (Pascal)
g = 9.8ms-2

QUESTIONS :
A civil engineer orders reinforced concrete beams from a factory at Spintex. The
concrete beams arrives on site with information about the 28 day compressive
strength test about the concrete as 50 MPa. Given that the concrete is normal
weight, normal density;

2
6. a) Calculate the i) elastic modulus of the concrete (Ec) (A;5)
ii) tensile strength of the concrete (fr) (A;5)
b) The concrete is reinforced with steel bars that have an
elastic modulus of 29,000,000 psi. Calculate the (A;5)
modular ratio.
c) Estimate the steel stress given that a uniformly (A;5)
distributed dead load imposes 10MPa of stress on the
concrete
d) On the site, a stack of an old stock of reinforce (A;5)
concrete beams with elastic modulus of 250 MPa are
present. Explain whether or not the old stock have
higher fc'

7. a) Given that the beam is to be subjected to a live load of
mass, 50,000 kg, a dead load of mass - 80,000 kg and a wind
(C;5)
load of 20 N. Estimate the total vertical load.

b) In the factory during testing, the beam cracks at a point of

(C;5)
loading, estimate the compressive stress at which the cracks
move further up.

c) Given the dimensions for the cross-section of the beam

below, estimate
1. The gross moment of inertia of the cross-section Ig.
2. the stress at a point (y) 4 mm from the neutral axis given (A;5)
a bending moment of 2500 Nm (A;5)
3. Describe what happens when the bending moment is
greater than the modulus of rapture (fr) of the concrete. (C;5)

8. a) If the compressive strength of a concrete is 300 MPa and

its a normal-weight concrete, what is the maximum
uniformly distributed load the beam can carry if it is used as
a simple beam with 24 m span without exceeding the
modulus of rupture of the concrete?
(A;8)
b) A client approaches you for advice on whether to use
Prestressed concrete or the normal reinforced concrete for a
structure. Discuss 3 factors to consider during the
consultation. (A;7)
4
c) Explains how prestressing helps to check the weaknesses
(C;5)
in normal reinforced concrete
(C;5)
c)Discuss the types of Prestressed concrete
