Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

• Analyze the basic fundamentals of various materials, material behavior and


manufacturing processes

• Identify and apply the appropriate material while designing any product / furniture with
the understanding of manufacturing constraints

• Understand the properties, limitations, applications of materials relating to design process

Unit I
Materials and behavior of materials & Metal processes-I : general properties &
applications of ferrous and non ferrous metals and alloys, metal manufacturing
process (metal casting, metal forming), metal manufacturing process ( metal powder
, metal forging, metal rolling)
Unit II
Materials and behavior of materials & Metal processes-II : metal
manufacturing process (bulk deformation , sheet metal , extrusion), metal removing
process, finishes of metal (powder coating, anodizing, electroplating techniques)
Unit III
Properties and processing of ceramics and glass : glass process, properties,
applications and design considerations, ceramics process, properties, applications and
design considerations, finishing ceramics ( printing & vitrification of surfaces),,
finishing glass ( cutting, drilling , grinding , polishing)
Unit IV
Joining and fastening process & Automation of manufacturing : welding,
bonding, fastening
Unit V
Plastics material its properties & its processes : Rapid prototype, Fabrication
and forming process, thermoplastics and thermosets, (pu coating, nano coating)
Unit VI
Composite materials : ceramic-matrix composites (cmc),, metal-matrix composites
(mmcs), polymer matrix composites (pmcs),, advance materials & finishes of current
trends
