Answer scheme [Award 1m for formula if final answer is incorrect]

1a) Distance = area under the v-t graph

= ½ x 2.95 x (9.25 – 8.9) [1]
= 0.516 m [1]

1b) Loss in potential energy = mgh

= 0.154 x 10 x 0.516 [1]
= 0.795 J [1]

1c) Max K.E = ½ mv2

= ½ x 0.154 x 2.952 [1]
= 0.67 J [1]

1d) The maximum kinetic energy gained is less than the loss in the potential energy because
there is energy loss due to air resistance. [1]

2a) Volume of the balloon will increase [1]

Pressure inside balloon is higher than pressure outside [1]
Thus volume has to increase until pressure in and out of balloon is in equilibrium.

2b) The gas molecules are in continuous, random motion [1]

and collide with the surface of the balloon, [1]
resulting in a pressure acting on the surface of the balloon.

3a) To ensure the temperature of the tea is uniform / thermal energy is distributed uniformly
within the tea. [1]

3bi) Point Q [1]

3bii) Point R [1]

3c) *When all the ice cubes melt, the temperature of the tea is lower (or is different from)
that of the surroundings,

There is a transfer of thermal energy from the surroundings to the tea. (or the tea
absorbs energy from the surroundings.) [1]

*Thus temperature of tea increase until it is in equilibrium with the surrounding air.

Any ONE mention. [1]

3d) The temperature of the surroundings is about 27/27.5/28 °C. [1]

4a) Focal length is the distance between optical centre and the focal point (OR point of
which rays parallel to the principal axis will converge after passing through the lens)
[1]
4b) 30 cm

4c) The new image becomes larger / is formed further away from the lens. [1]
5a) v = fλ

3 x 108 = 1.2 x 109 x λ [1]

λ = 0.25 m [1]

5b) v = 2d/t

3 x 108 = 2d / (6.5 x 5 x 10-6) [1]

d = 4875 m

d = 4880 m (corrected to 3 s.f.) [1]

6bi) Not fair [1]

Sound takes time to travel from starter position to time keeper’s position. There will be a
time delay.

OR

Time measured by time keeper will be shorter than the actual time John takes. [1]

6bii) 1. No effect on time measured [1]

The speed of sound is independent of the frequency. [1]

2. Time measured will be more accurate / time measured will be longer [1]
The speed of light is very high. The timer can see the flag moves with negligible time
delay. [1]

7a) Power output of the heating element = V2 / R

= 2202 / 50
= 968 W [1]

Pt = mc∆θ [1]
968 = 0.05 x 1000 x (θ - 20)
θ = 39.4 °C [1]

7b) If S is connected to contact Q, the current flowing through the motor (OR voltage across
the motor) is reduced. [1]
As an additional resistor R is connected in series with it to the mains.

The speed of rotation of the fan is reduced

OR
The rate of air flowing through the dryer is reduced
OR
The time of air flowing through the dryer is lengthened [1]

As a result, the temperature of air flowing out would be higher than when S is connected
to P.
7c) The average kinetic energy of the water molecules in the hair will increase. More water
molecules at the water surface gain enough energy to escape from the water. [1]

In addition, the water molecules escaped from the water surface will be blown away by
the breeze from the dryer. [1]

8a)

8b) Increase the strength of the magnetic field. [1]

Increase the current passing through rod. [1]

8c) F=W–R [1]

9a) When handle is turned,

the magnet is rotated. [1]
the magnetic field cutting the coil changes with time [1]
inducing voltage in the coil.

9b) Increase the frequency of rotation of handle OR

Use a stronger magnet OR
Increase the number of turns in the coil [1]

Induced voltage
