So, in this programme we are going to reflect that process back to you in the
form of a series of snapshots containing what you say about our work, collated
from the many different ways you tell us what you think – through word of mouth,
hand-written notes, cards and emails.
There is so much to learn from listening to people and in giving people the
chance to offer their views. We often hear about the many different interests
that people in the hospital have, interests that are bubbling away just below the
surface, but interests which can sometimes be hard to sustain in a hospital or ward
environment,
Sometimes the feedback we receive is long and detailed and at other times short
and straight to the point. Whichever way it comes to us it is always valuable.
Updates on each hospital are covered in their own introduction section but here is
some news in brief from the last 3 months.

Thank you for taking part in our programmes and continuing to support the
workshops and events.
Introduction
Workshops
The hospital community at St. John's is a bright and cheery one, full of people who
love to sing and dance, especially to Scottish songs and Jazz standards. We have
spent time talking to people, and listening to what they are interested in, and as a
result … the wards are in for some treats this summer!
The marvellous Wendy Weatherby will be bringing her very special brand of
music and storytelling to the wards as a new regular performer on our Hospital
Arts scheme and for the first time Artlink are going to host a brand new one-off
musical spectacular which will be open to a selection of wards at St. John's.
Also in the last brochure we said we would let you see some of the works that
were selected from the Vanessa Lawrence watercolor painting workshops at St
John's Psychological Therapies Service. The effect of these workshops is best
described by the people who took part:

whilst undertaking this work. Our
experience of working with Artlink has
been a very positive one, with gentle
encouragement given whilst being patient with those of us undertaking learning
a new skill, and it has been a pleasure to do this piece of joint work. Given the
positive feedback and outcomes from this recent project we would be hopeful to
have a similar opportunity again in future for a different group. Thank you Artlink
team – it has been a privilege and a pleasure."

These workshops have come out of direct conversations with Frances Aitken who
had been delivering stress and distress workshops across all 4 main hospitals. The
intention is to deliver a series of workshops after Frances has delivered training in
order to encourage ongoing activities on all wards. These workshops are geared
not only to provide distraction and activity to people on the wards but also to help
staff gain confidence in delivering activities while developing their skills in certain
art processes. At the point of writing the brochure we still have to meet with the
wards but we are hoping to be working with Ward 9 and Ward 21. Two artists
will be delivering this series of 5 week making workshops.

NEW! Miss Annabel Sings Sing-A-Long-A-Spectacular!
Artlink Hospital Arts and Miss Annabel invite patients and staff to join in an hour
of Sing-A-Long-Classics. She can't do it alone, so best to 'Grease Lightning' your
dancing shoes and get ready to sing some of your 'Favourite Things' with hits
to get you singing, laughing and dancing together! Expect plenty of interactive
sing-a-long classics from the movies and the musicals and a healthy dose of
audience participation. See you there!
With a passion for reminiscence and the help of a huge back catalogue of songs
from every genre, Edinburgh's premier Cabaret singer and host will be celebrating
songs we know from the silver screen. Cinema and Musicals have been a much
loved pastime since the movies began and Annabel is pleased to be back to share
her love of this genre and share some stories of the stars in front of the camera and
back stage. She will be returning to Ward 3 and the Stroke unit with her unique
brand of entertainment and chat, inviting you to join her to sing, share stories,
laugh, dance or simply sit back and enjoy some entertainment.

Introduction
Hospital Arts have had a great time so far, making friends old and new at The
Royal Victoria Building wards and over in the Anne Fergusson building on Wards
50, 51and 55. We are excited about the summer months, as we invite Toby
Mottershead - one of Edinburgh's most well-known musicians - to the dayrooms
at RVB. We will continue to brighten up the afternoons in the Anne Fergusson
building MOE wards with our programme highlighting the brilliant and eclectic
Scottish entertainment scene. Miss Annabel Sings continues to get everyone
singing and smiling in her sessions.

Workshops
We know what staff and patients get out of the work, but what about all the
performers? We asked our regular performer - singer Sarah Phizacklea - about
her experience on the wards and she said, "I’m struggling to put into a few
words all the incredible moments I've been privileged to be a part of thanks to
working for Artlink. Staff and patients coming together to sing and dance, families
reaching out to cry with one and other, the stories that songs can bring out of
a dementia patient, listening to a doctor or cleaner humming my last song as I
leave! Every time I step into a hospital ward, day centre or activity room I never
know what to expect and every time I come away feeling like I've been able to
use my skills for something good."
We know that the patients appreciate the distraction of the events on their wards,
as we have mentioned before it can be a long day in the hospital if you have
nothing to do. Here's what some patients had to say about our performances on
the wards.
"Such long days in here ... wonderful to have something so positive to break it up.
When are you coming back?"
Patient at a Sarah Phizacklea event.
"You sang all the old songs. All the songs from when I was young. Thank you for
taking me back."
Patient at Miss Annabel Sings Singing and Reminiscing session on Ward 55.
"Oh, someone to talk to and have some fun with! You’ve brightened a long day."

intention is to deliver a series of workshops after Frances has delivered training in

not only to provide distraction and activity to people on the wards but also to help
staff gain confidence in delivering activities while skilling them up in certain art
processes. At the point of writing the brochure we still have to meet with the wards
but we are hoping to be working with Ward 74 and Ward 26. Two artists will be
delivering this series of 5 week making workshops in the next brochure.

Events
Wow, what luck to pin down the brilliant and busy Toby Mottershead to join our
regular artist scheme. Toby is Edinburgh's premier Rhythm 'n' Blues man and when
he's not performing at one of the many Jazz and Blues festivals around Edinburgh
and Scotland you may have heard him jamming at your local bar. We know here
at Hospital Arts that the days are long and anything that helps us feel like our old
selves is vital to our wellbeing (for patients and staff alike!).
Halfway through a performance at The Western a few months ago a staff nurse
on Ward 5 exclaimed "I know you Toby! I saw you a few months ago! (to the
patients) Lucky you, you are going to love him!"
Toby will be visiting the dayrooms of The Royal Victoria Building for amazing
musicianship, song and chat that will make the time whizz by.

Introduction
It is always brilliant working with the energetic activity coordinators Kim and
Carey at the integrated Stroke Unit and Medicine of the Elderly wards. It is a
mutual learning experience and it strengthens the impact of our work to work
with staff on the wards. Working collaboratively, we have made impactful arts
and music happen on their wards over the years and now we are excited to start
working with newly-appointed activity coordinator Murray Fotheringham at Ward
120. We look forward to getting to know him, the staff and the patients on his
ward this quarter as well as developing activity that stimulates and entertains.
Over on our usual wards our magnificent magician Paul will be bringing some
chat and sparkle to your day. Keep your eyes peeled for his bow tie and pack of
cards.

We asked one of the artists working on the Stroke Ward to give us some feedback
and here is what she told us,
"I worked with patients on the Stroke and Dementia wards at the RIE. I wanted to
work in a way that was accessible for all patients; that is taking something that
could work in multiple ways and have tasks within it that were flexible to allow as
much participation as possible. I decided to work with block printing; the activity
allowed for much collaboration and conversation between staff, myself and
patients. There was a freedom to it that allowed for testing out more abstract ideas
alongside more realistic or recognisable motifs.
Interestingly the printing process seemed to bring about conversations about what
patients 'used to do for a living.' There was one woman in particular that had
been a printer and she just had all this muscle memory and was able to just print
non-stop, making the most beautiful prints composed of other people's printing
blocks; how she lined up the different printing blocks and chose complimentary
colours was fantastic to see. It's crucial that people come away feeling positive
and that the activity has enhanced their feelings about themselves rather than
remind them what they can't do."

Introduction
All the wards in the New Royal Edinburgh Building have had their first vitrine
workshop with Tom Krasny. The idea is to use the glass spaces in the wall that
divide the communal dining and living spaces to create dioramas. Each ward will
have a slightly different theme and the pieces made during the workshops will
help populate and tell the story of the scene. Each ward gets 3 workshops and it's
been a promising start with patients creating some really expressive and creative
characters. There are still months to go in terms of workshop activities but we cant
wait to see the finished dioramas. That's a wee bit away yet as we still have lots of
work to do with each of the wards before that happens, though a lot of the fun is
also in the making! Here's what Tom had to say about the process:

many more projects planned, some for the Glasshouses site and some that we
hope to offer for sale at on-site events such as the summer fête, and perhaps
more widely to customers in Edinburgh. Watch this space…
Thank you to all at Artlink for the opportunity, and know that Wednesday and
Thursday afternoons at the Glasshouses are in my diary for the foreseeable future.

"I have been volunteering at the Glasshouses for a while. I am mainly involved in
woodwork projects. I helped to make a table which I am proud of. I have worked
in construction most of my adult life and it is a great feeling being able to learn
new skills. Anne and Neil are very friendly and encouraging. I love the feeling of
achievement and having a purpose while working on the various projects. I am
hoping the new skill I have learned will be helpful for me in the future as I return to
full time work."

The initial ideas have been presented back to the staff and patients at the RFU and
we have been given the green light to proceed to the next stage. The next stage is
to work out the technical aspects of the sculpture, the interactive elements and tie
down costs. Once we have done this we will do another presentation to staff and
patients on the ward in order to get feedback and input and hopefully another
green light to move into production. Again we would like to thank the staff and
patients on the ward for all their input so far and look forward to the next stage of
this project.

Open Art Studio with Anne Elliot
We are currently busy making art and props for a Euro-themed garden party
and the Summer Fête. The Glasshouses art studio is the place to explore your
ideas and let your imagination and artistic creativity loose. It's also a meeting
place where participants old and new gather to share ideas, knowledge and
techniques; where old friends make new friends. It is a great space to work on
large scale art projects, and somewhere to paint without worrying about making a
mess. All materials and protective clothing are provided.

Euro Garden Party
We've just had the Eurovision Song Contest, but let's not dwell on the results of
that, rather let's look to the future and come help us celebrate all things European.
From the Mona Lisa, Monet, music and mozzarella, there's lots to celebrate, plus
a very special musical guest. Miss Annabel Sings and Anne come together to
co-host this years Garden Party at the Glasshouses.
The party will take place in the picnic area of the garden. There will be good
company, games, music, art displays and much more. Refreshments will be
provided but bring a picnic lunch or something to share. It's just one of the best
ways to spend a summer's afternoon.

"I can honestly say our patients are benefiting a lot from the involvement of Artlink
in our ward. The general atmosphere of the ward has charged and you can see that
our patients are enjoying the different activities.
The Supper Club has made the colder and darker evenings something to look
forward to. The decorations and entertainment from the different musicians has
been refreshing. I have seen our patients dancing with Elvis and other musicians.
Miss Annabel Sings' performances have lifted a lot of our patients' spirits. She is
very interactive with patients and her positivity is just contagious.
DanceBase has left its mark in the ward and we are hoping to continue with what
we have been taught. Reading Friends are also helping with the one-to-one

patients have had more activities than any time since you have been involved."

In the coming months we will begin to take a step back from Prospect Bank,
exploring with them how we can maintain a programme of activity by tapping
into local community resources. This will take time and we anticipate that we will
continue to offer support to the activities coordinator and provide access to our
network of community providers.
We are excited to invite back some firm favourites as well as new performers for
the summer season. This is a chance for staff, families and patients to dress up
and share an experience. Each event will take place in the living room and be
organised by activity coordinator Jess and Prospect Bank Staff.

Song and entertainment always cheer an afternoon and can help make us feel
like ourselves again. Artlink are excited to be introducing the That's Entertainment
programme to Liberton Hospital over the next quarter to put patients in a cheery
mood and get a taste of some of the amazing talent keeping Edinburgh nightlife
alive. Weekday afternoons will be filled with music and magic as we invite a
dazzling variety of musicians and entertainers to perform.
