Hospital Arts Programme
July - September 2019

Have Your Say

Artlink delivers arts workshops and events in hospitals across

Edinburgh and the Lothians. We have a team of artists and performers
who run workshops and events that vary from hospital to hospital,
anything from singing performances on elderly care wards, to
sculpture and painting workshops on stroke wards.

We endeavour to talk to as many people in the hospitals as possible in order to

ensure that what we provide is of relevance to staff, patients and their visitors. As
you can imagine, hospitals are busy and often stressful places, which can make
capturing the impact of our work on individuals and departments difficult, and
it's something that needs to be done carefully and with a great deal of respect.
As an arts organisation, we find that being as imaginative as possible in the way
we encourage people to feedback ensures that the work continues to be both
inventive, and also what people want it to be.

So, in this programme we are going to reflect that process back to you in the
form of a series of snapshots containing what you say about our work, collated
from the many different ways you tell us what you think – through word of mouth,
hand-written notes, cards and emails.

There is so much to learn from listening to people and in giving people the
chance to offer their views. We often hear about the many different interests
that people in the hospital have, interests that are bubbling away just below the
surface, but interests which can sometimes be hard to sustain in a hospital or ward
environment,

Sometimes the feedback we receive is long and detailed and at other times short
and straight to the point. Whichever way it comes to us it is always valuable.
Updates on each hospital are covered in their own introduction section but here is
some news in brief from the last 3 months.

At St John's, Magdalena Durant was the principal performer; we also made a

selection of works from the Vanessa Lawrence watercolour workshops which
we hope to have framed and installed on the walls. Both staff and participants
were on the selection panel for this. At the Western General, Paul Novak was the
principal performer and Sarah Phizacklea performed the same role at the Royal
Infirmary. Anne Elliot started taster workshops across all three hospitals. We also
continue to develop the working relationship with Frances Aitken on her stress and
distress training, where we go in after she has delivered this training with a 5 week
making workshop in order to encourage ongoing activities on all wards.

St John's

Introduction
Workshops

The hospital community at St. John's is a bright and cheery one, full of people who
love to sing and dance, especially to Scottish songs and Jazz standards. We have
spent time talking to people, and listening to what they are interested in, and as a
result … the wards are in for some treats this summer!

The marvellous Wendy Weatherby will be bringing her very special brand of
music and storytelling to the wards as a new regular performer on our Hospital
Arts scheme and for the first time Artlink are going to host a brand new one-off
musical spectacular which will be open to a selection of wards at St. John's.

Also in the last brochure we said we would let you see some of the works that
were selected from the Vanessa Lawrence watercolor painting workshops at St
John's Psychological Therapies Service. The effect of these workshops is best
described by the people who took part:

"This experience has been invaluable to

us all; in the first instance, to get some
meaningful artwork for our walls which at
the moment are very bare and uninviting.
This will have a huge benefit in brightening
up our department for staff and patients and
hopefully make it a more pleasant place to
be."

"The Artlink workshops significantly improved our patients' experience for those
who attended the group and the artwork produced will continue to improve the
experience of those who visit our department in the future."

Nicole Carter
Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology (CAAP)

"Given the challenging emotions

people will often combat as part of the
therapy they do whilst attending the
department, this will serve to make the
area appear less clinical. It has also
been really positive for both staff and
service users to experience each other
in a different situation within the setting

whilst undertaking this work. Our
experience of working with Artlink has
been a very positive one, with gentle
encouragement given whilst being patient with those of us undertaking learning
a new skill, and it has been a pleasure to do this piece of joint work. Given the
positive feedback and outcomes from this recent project we would be hopeful to
have a similar opportunity again in future for a different group. Thank you Artlink
team – it has been a privilege and a pleasure."

New 5 Week Making Workshops

Workshops

These workshops have come out of direct conversations with Frances Aitken who
had been delivering stress and distress workshops across all 4 main hospitals. The
intention is to deliver a series of workshops after Frances has delivered training in
order to encourage ongoing activities on all wards. These workshops are geared
not only to provide distraction and activity to people on the wards but also to help
staff gain confidence in delivering activities while developing their skills in certain
art processes. At the point of writing the brochure we still have to meet with the
wards but we are hoping to be working with Ward 9 and Ward 21. Two artists
will be delivering this series of 5 week making workshops.

Events

We are excited to welcome Wendy

onto the regular artists scheme at

with a lovely voice, a great sense
of humour, beautiful cello playing,
wonderful stories and a seemingly
never-ending knowledge of Scottish

Roslyn and Sarah Phizacklea

Hospital Arts have had a great time so far, making friends old and new at The
Royal Victoria Building wards and over in the Anne Fergusson building on Wards
50, 51and 55. We are excited about the summer months, as we invite Toby
Mottershead - one of Edinburgh's most well-known musicians - to the dayrooms
at RVB. We will continue to brighten up the afternoons in the Anne Fergusson
building MOE wards with our programme highlighting the brilliant and eclectic
Scottish entertainment scene. Miss Annabel Sings continues to get everyone
singing and smiling in her sessions.

Introduction (cont.)
Workshops

We know what staff and patients get out of the work, but what about all the
performers? We asked our regular performer - singer Sarah Phizacklea - about
her experience on the wards and she said, "I’m struggling to put into a few
words all the incredible moments I've been privileged to be a part of thanks to
working for Artlink. Staff and patients coming together to sing and dance, families
reaching out to cry with one and other, the stories that songs can bring out of
a dementia patient, listening to a doctor or cleaner humming my last song as I
leave! Every time I step into a hospital ward, day centre or activity room I never
know what to expect and every time I come away feeling like I've been able to
use my skills for something good."

We know that the patients appreciate the distraction of the events on their wards,
as we have mentioned before it can be a long day in the hospital if you have
nothing to do. Here's what some patients had to say about our performances on
the wards.

"Such long days in here ... wonderful to have something so positive to break it up.
When are you coming back?"
Patient at a Sarah Phizacklea event.

"You sang all the old songs. All the songs from when I was young. Thank you for
taking me back."
Patient at Miss Annabel Sings Singing and Reminiscing session on Ward 55.

"Oh, someone to talk to and have some fun with! You’ve brightened a long day."

Wow, what luck to pin down the brilliant and busy Toby Mottershead to join our
regular artist scheme. Toby is Edinburgh's premier Rhythm 'n' Blues man and when
he's not performing at one of the many Jazz and Blues festivals around Edinburgh
and Scotland you may have heard him jamming at your local bar. We know here
at Hospital Arts that the days are long and anything that helps us feel like our old
selves is vital to our wellbeing (for patients and staff alike!).

Halfway through a performance at The Western a few months ago a staff nurse
on Ward 5 exclaimed "I know you Toby! I saw you a few months ago! (to the
patients) Lucky you, you are going to love him!"

Toby will be visiting the dayrooms of The Royal Victoria Building for amazing
musicianship, song and chat that will make the time whizz by.

Introduction
It is always brilliant working with the energetic activity coordinators Kim and
Carey at the integrated Stroke Unit and Medicine of the Elderly wards. It is a
mutual learning experience and it strengthens the impact of our work to work
with staff on the wards. Working collaboratively, we have made impactful arts
and music happen on their wards over the years and now we are excited to start
working with newly-appointed activity coordinator Murray Fotheringham at Ward
120. We look forward to getting to know him, the staff and the patients on his
ward this quarter as well as developing activity that stimulates and entertains.
Over on our usual wards our magnificent magician Paul will be bringing some
chat and sparkle to your day. Keep your eyes peeled for his bow tie and pack of
cards.

What does the work mean to patients

on wards?

"Our stroke wards benefit from the

varied workshops that are arranged
through Artlink and the artists. Our
patients have such a long day and
having Artlink coming in cheering up
their day is of the greatest value."

We asked one of the artists working on the Stroke Ward to give us some feedback
and here is what she told us,

"I worked with patients on the Stroke and Dementia wards at the RIE. I wanted to
work in a way that was accessible for all patients; that is taking something that
could work in multiple ways and have tasks within it that were flexible to allow as
much participation as possible. I decided to work with block printing; the activity
allowed for much collaboration and conversation between staff, myself and
patients. There was a freedom to it that allowed for testing out more abstract ideas
alongside more realistic or recognisable motifs.

Interestingly the printing process seemed to bring about conversations about what
patients 'used to do for a living.' There was one woman in particular that had
been a printer and she just had all this muscle memory and was able to just print
non-stop, making the most beautiful prints composed of other people's printing
blocks; how she lined up the different printing blocks and chose complimentary
colours was fantastic to see. It's crucial that people come away feeling positive
and that the activity has enhanced their feelings about themselves rather than
remind them what they can't do."

Introduction
All the wards in the New Royal Edinburgh Building have had their first vitrine
workshop with Tom Krasny. The idea is to use the glass spaces in the wall that
divide the communal dining and living spaces to create dioramas. Each ward will
have a slightly different theme and the pieces made during the workshops will
help populate and tell the story of the scene. Each ward gets 3 workshops and it's
been a promising start with patients creating some really expressive and creative
characters. There are still months to go in terms of workshop activities but we cant
wait to see the finished dioramas. That's a wee bit away yet as we still have lots of
work to do with each of the wards before that happens, though a lot of the fun is
also in the making! Here's what Tom had to say about the process:

24 Have Your Say

Royal Edinburgh

Introduction (cont.)
Workshops

"From my experience running workshops at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, art

activities allow participants to shift focus from stressful circumstances, concentrate
on something external and make creative decisions which are at the same time
intuitive and subjective. In workshops that take place in hospitals, making the
work is often a collaborative effort - a dialogue between an artist or staff member
and a patient. Engaging in creative activities together is fun and informal. It gives
participants a sense of agency in a place which often makes them feel controlled.
What's more, it lets them personalise objects in an environment that can feel very
impersonal. Art activities also allow space for valuable interpersonal exchange.
I am frequently surprised by and learn from people I work with, their ingenuity,
sense of humour and creative choices. The success of a collaborative artwork lies
in the approach and atmosphere in which it is made, and I can personally say
working with Artlink has made me, as well as many other people, very happy."

Tom Krasny, Artist

People get so much out of involvement

in the arts. Working together in
workshops encourages a solidarity
between patients that often follows
them from hospital to community.

This sense of enjoyment and participation in worthwhile activity is echoed by

The initial ideas have been presented back to the staff and patients at the RFU and
we have been given the green light to proceed to the next stage. The next stage is
to work out the technical aspects of the sculpture, the interactive elements and tie
down costs. Once we have done this we will do another presentation to staff and
patients on the ward in order to get feedback and input and hopefully another
green light to move into production. Again we would like to thank the staff and
patients on the ward for all their input so far and look forward to the next stage of
this project.

introduce you to the joys of working
with plants and nature, both inside the
Glasshouses and outside in the garden
space. The benefits of gardening activities,
the camaraderie you establish with your
fellow gardeners and the new skills you
learn are really beneficial to both physical
and mental health. All the hard work of
sewing and planting has largely been done
and we are fast approaching the harvest
stage where volunteers reap the benefits of

all their hard work.

One-to-One with Anne Elliot

Anne is offering the opportunity to make art on a

one-to-one basis. These sessions can take place
either at the Glasshouses or on the wards. This is an
opportunity to work in a quiet space, on a larger
scale artwork or a special project idea. If you know
someone who would benefit from these one-to-one

sessions please contact Anne Elliot to discuss and

book a one-to-one workshop.

Euro Garden Party

We've just had the Eurovision Song Contest, but let's not dwell on the results of
that, rather let's look to the future and come help us celebrate all things European.
From the Mona Lisa, Monet, music and mozzarella, there's lots to celebrate, plus
a very special musical guest. Miss Annabel Sings and Anne come together to
co-host this years Garden Party at the Glasshouses.

The party will take place in the picnic area of the garden. There will be good
company, games, music, art displays and much more. Refreshments will be
provided but bring a picnic lunch or something to share. It's just one of the best
ways to spend a summer's afternoon.

Prospect Bank

Introduction
It's been a fantastic Spring of eclectic entertainment,
dance and song at Prospect Bank! The residents
and staff consistently show their appreciation during
sessions with dance, laughter, smiles and plenty of
"Please come back!" to our wonderful musicians.
Now, as we move into the warmer months we look
forward to carrying on our collaborative work with

staff at Prospect Bank to ensure the summer season is
a hit!

We've been going out of our way to invite in other

organisations and offer them the support needed to ensure a successful project. It's
all about community and collaboration and it appears to be working.

"I can honestly say our patients are benefiting a lot from the involvement of Artlink
in our ward. The general atmosphere of the ward has charged and you can see that
our patients are enjoying the different activities.

The Supper Club has made the colder and darker evenings something to look
forward to. The decorations and entertainment from the different musicians has
been refreshing. I have seen our patients dancing with Elvis and other musicians.
Miss Annabel Sings' performances have lifted a lot of our patients' spirits. She is
very interactive with patients and her positivity is just contagious.

DanceBase has left its mark in the ward and we are hoping to continue with what
we have been taught. Reading Friends are also helping with the one-to-one
interacting time with patients. We are now looking forward to a dementia friendly
garden all thanks to you. PB has benefited from partnering with you and our

patients have had more activities than any time since you have been involved."
Sarudzai Mutebuka, Activities Coordinator

In the coming months we will begin to take a step back from Prospect Bank,
exploring with them how we can maintain a programme of activity by tapping
into local community resources. This will take time and we anticipate that we will
continue to offer support to the activities coordinator and provide access to our
network of community providers.

The Supper Club

Events

The Supper Club is a series of evening en-

tertainments developed by staff and Miss
Annabel Sings to create the experience
of a night out (at home) in sumptuous
surroundings. Now we are back for our
fourth season, which sees staff taking
over the organisation on the Supper Club;

room to entertain the residents. Supper Club

invites the local community to Prospect Bank
and so far a vibrant mix of musicians have
entertained.

We are excited to invite back some firm favourites as well as new performers for
the summer season. This is a chance for staff, families and patients to dress up
and share an experience. Each event will take place in the living room and be
organised by activity coordinator Jess and Prospect Bank Staff.

Volunteering

Reading Friends go from just a handful of

volunteers on one ward to over a dozen
dynamic and varied volunteers at five
hospital sites, including Liberton Hospital,
Western General, Ellen's Glen and even
St. John's in Livingston.

From full-time mums to retirees, yoga

teachers to filmmakers, the volunteers
have such great experience to share with

patients on the wards. We've lost count
of the amount of volunteers they've read
to, reaching up to 100 patients so far. We
also go on monthly trips to places such as The Scottish Poetry Library and The
Living Memory Centre, and in the future will be working towards more inclusive
group sessions focusing on reminiscence and humorous poetry.

This enjoyment is reflected in their comments:

"I visit elderly patients in the Western General Hospital and read aloud to them.
So far, I've read poems, stories and life histories. I've also showed patients
pictures that illustrate the reading material.

We chat about the material, for example what we think of it, or things we
notice about it. We might share memories that it prompts. Some patients
respond in ways other than speaking, for example by smiling or laughing.

I love stories and poems and I enjoy
Volunteering

spending time with the patients. I like

helping them feel better by reading to them
and spending time with them. It's a very
simple but powerful experience.

The sessions let the patients talk to

someone who has time to listen. It can be
very therapeutic when someone listens to
you, especially if you are feeling lonely or
unhappy.

If you would be interested in becoming a

Reading Friends volunteer, I would warmly
recommend it."

dazzling variety of musicians and entertainers to perform.

We've just started to introduce the programme to Liberton patients and the
response to Miss Annabel Sings performances have been very positive.
