Table of contents
The units are not to be opened by unauthorised personnel. If opened anyway, the
warranty will be lost.
Safety issues
Installing the unit implies work with dangerous currents and voltages. Therefore, the installation
should only be carried out by authorised personnel who understand the risks involved in working
with live electrical equipment.
Be aware of the hazardous live currents and voltages. Do not touch any AC
measurement inputs as this could lead to injury or death.
Definitions
Throughout this document a number of notes and warnings will be presented. To ensure that these
are noticed, they will be highlighted in order to separate them from the general text.
Notes
The notes provide general information which will be helpful for the reader to
bear in mind.

2. Description of option
A5 option
Option A5 is a software option and therefore not related to any hardware apart from the
standard-installed hardware.
The directional overcurrent protection is a protection that activates when the current exceeds a
certain limit in a defined direction, either imported from the mains or exported to the mains.
This protection is often used when dictated by the national or regional mains company.
Option A5 cannot be used in a single AGC (option G5, power management not
selected).

The ANSI number refers to the IEEE standard: ‘Standard Electrical Power System Device

3. Functional description
The directional overcurrent protection trips when the current, which is imported or exported to the
mains, exceeds a certain limit.
The directional overcurrent protection is used for tripping either the tie breaker or the mains breaker
controlled by the AGC mains.

Applications
The current measurement is positive when current is supplied from the mains to
the plant. The current measurement is negative when current is being supplied to
the mains.
When operating parallel to the mains, e.g. in a base load application where the base loaded
generator only is meant to supply the factory load, a disconnected breaker in the HV
transmission line means that the generator plant will be islanded and it will supply power to the
consumers that is connected on the mains side. Then, the differential current relay activates and
trips the MB.
Measurements
The current measurement in the display will be shown with either positive or negative sign.
When the measurement is positive, the current is flowing from the mains to the generator plant.
When the measurement is negative, the current is flowing from the generator plant to the mains.
Measurement principle
The measurement of the AC directional overcurrent protection is based on actual current
measurements on the AGC mains unit. If any of the three current measurements flows to the
mains, then the relay will trip (depending of the set point.)
The setting range of the protection is -200-0 and 0-200%. In the negative range, the current
flows to the mains. In the positive range, the current flows to the application from the mains.
4. Parameter list
For further information about the structure of the parameter descriptions, please
see the Designer’s Reference Handbook.
The current measurement is positive when current is supplied from the mains to
the plant. The current measurement is negative when current is being supplied to
the mains.
