UNIT 1: WE ARE CREATED BY GOD

Lesson 1: God Made Us Unique

Objectives

.
nc
• discover that you are special.

• identify your likes and interests, and

,I
• thank God for your talents and skills.

Values Focus: Self-esteem

up
Lesson Scripture – Psalm 139:14, ”I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Biblical Background:
ro
David was escaping from the onslaught of his enemies during the time when he wrote this
lG

psalm. He was anointed by God to be the new king of Israel. But the incumbent king resisted his
appointment. He plotted to kill David. For fear for his life, David ran away to remote town and
hid himself in caves to protect himself from harm.

While alone and hiding, David had no choice but to notice in great detail all his surroundings.
ba

He was able to observe other creation including his very self. The sun and the day, the light and
the night had captured his attention and contemplation. He then realized that he was not alone in
the secluded place. There is God, who being present everywhere, is also with him in his hiding
Vi

place. And being everywhere all the time, David learned that God is a witness to everything that
transpired in his life beginning with his birth. And the very presence of God makes everything
planned and designed. Everything is not a product of chance. Knowing that no person can be
everywhere all the time, David concluded that God is his very own maker. God had something to do
with how he was created and formed. His whole being was orchestrated by God.

David exclaimed that he was wonderfully made. Wonderful in a sense that he was created
unique; endowned by characteristics solely his own. When David realized his unique place in God’s
creation, he gained confidence and assurance of God’s love and protection. It made him feel
secure in the midst of uncertainties. Likewise, students need to learn of their uniqueness so they
will live appreciating their lives as well as those of others.

Lesson 2: We have talents and skills

ba

Objectives:
Vi

• list down some of your talents and skills,

• describe your talent and skills, and

• thank God for your talents and skills.

Values Focus: Self-confidence

Lesson Scripture – Romans 12:6a, “ We all have different gifts. Each gift came
because of the grace of God.”

Biblical Background:

There is not only one talent and skill. They are as many as the number of people according to
Paul. This truth he wanted to teach to the believers of Christ so that they will realize that they
possess their own talent and skill as others do.

.
nc
Paul wrote them to address the tendency of people to compare what they have to that of the
others. And this tendency either make them feel lesser or greater than others depending on the
kind of talent they possess.

,I
According to Paul, there is no talent better than the others. Each skill is important and
beneficial to the welfare of all. He even compared people with different talents to that of a human
body. That it is composed of many and different parts and each one is lacking without the other,

up
believers need also think, feel and work that way.

The issue back at Paul’s time is still much present nowadays. People love comparing
themselves to other people and would love it once they feel superior over the others and would
ro
hate it when they are not.

As the biblical verse tells, talents and skills are grace from God. Nobody deserves it. It is
lG

purely gifts from God. And as such, the learners should have no other business but to be confident
with his own gift and to appreciate, use and cultivate his or her skill for the benefits of others.

Lesson 3: We express our feelings

Objectives:

• learn that you experience different emotions at different times, and.

• Describe your feelings when you are happy, sad, angry, or afraid.

Values Focus: Self Expression

Lesson Scripture - James 1:19, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this:
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry…”

Biblical Background:

.
James addressed his readers as brothers and sisters. That is how believers should relate to

nc
each other; as a family. And as a family, everyone should work for unity and harmony within the
household.

But the very reason why James wrote the believers was because of the conflict among

,I
themselves. Yes, conflict is also possible among believers.

Notice what James said in our biblical verse, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of

up
this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry…” He affirmed the
relationship among believers and recognized the state of their relationship. He did not deny the
presence of the conflict and the corresponding feelings that the conflict brought to the believers.
ro
James did not say “do not get angry or never be angry.” Nor did he make them feel guilty
because they feel angry. He just imply in the verse that believers have the right to feel angry, the
need to express it and the wisdom to manage it.
lG

People need to realize that all kinds of emotions are given by God. And emotions should
naturally be expressed. That there is no reason to deny if someone is sad or excited, happy and
disappointed. People should be in touched with their feelings and free to express it.

.

Objectives:

• express the importance of taking care of our bodies,

,I
• identify healthy and unhealthy practices, and

Values Focus: Care for your body

up
show right attitudes in taking care of oneself.
ro
Lesson Scripture – 1 Corinthians 6:19, “Your body is a temple of God”

Biblical Background:
lG

Paul has to remind the believers that their bodies are not inferior to the spirit. Forgetting the
importance of the body seems to be a constant problem of human beings, including believers. The
lavish emphasis on the importance of the spirit affected the awareness of people on the equal
importance of the body.
ba

Who would think that among believers, there will be people who will get involved in
immorality? That is the issue confronting the church in Corinthians. Paul has to put a stop on this
issue surrounding the church. And to be able to do so, He needs to teach them once again about
Vi

the equal importance of body and spirit. That the persons committing sexual immorality were
mistaken that the sins of the bodies would not affect their spirits. He emphasized in his letter that
a person’s body is not just a mere body but the temple of God. And being the temple of God, that
makes the body not just physical but also spiritual. And as believers take care of their spirit, the
same care should be given to their bodies by not using it for unhealthy and ungodly practices.

Today, the issue may not be as delicate as that of with the Corinthians but the same reminder
should be applied in order to take care of a person’s body.
Unhealthy food and habits need to be avoided so as not to compromise the health and
condition of the body. On the one hand, activities that are body building should be observed.

Lesson 5: We Show Love

,I
Objectives:

up
describe how your family show their love for one another.
ro
• demonstrate affection in the family, and

• write a prayer for all the members of your family.

lG

Values Focus: Love and concern

Lesson Scripture - John 15:12, “Love each other as I have loved you.”
ba

Biblical Background:
Vi

First, love is a commandment. It is neither a wish nor a request. Being a commandment, it is

important, necessary and mandatory. Love is indispensable. It is the center of Jesus’ teaching.

Second, love is relational. One cannot love without the other. There should be a recipient of
one’s love. Jesus commanded His disciples to love each other.

Third, love is loving others the Jesus’s way. “… as I have loved you.”, said Jesus. One needs
to love like Jesus. No other measurement but the love of Jesus.
It is natural for people to love their ownselves. It is possible for them to love others. It is
divine to love like Jesus.

Even the disciples of Jesus Christ prioritized loving oneself. There were times that their self
interests conflict with the others. There were times that they found it difficult to love each other.

Loving the others is sometimes a challenge. Loving like Jesus is even a greater
challenge. Sometimes it is the very family that a person fails to love. But Jesus would like people

.
to show the highest level of love to others and to their families.

nc
Objectives:

• describe a family that does things together,

,I
• list down ways to strengthen unity in the family,

up
express your feelings about doing things together as a family, and

pray and thank God for togetherness in your family

ro
Values Focus: Unity

Lesson Scripture - Psalm 133:1, “Look at how good and pleasing it is when families live
together as one!”
lG

Biblical Background:
ba

Unity is good. Unity is beautiful. There can never be better than unity in the family. Each
member doing his respective role for the benefit of the whole family.
Vi

Psalm 133 is a fitting reminder of what a family should be. That is, people living together in
love and unity. It is a reference to the 12 tribes of Israel, being united as one in proclaiming David
as the king of Israel. It also an allusion to David’s very own family that was beset by tragedy. And
it is a prophecy of what will be the ending of the story of Joseph and his brothers. All these
examples are testimonies how things could have been better in the family and society had the
members of it pursued and preserved unity in their midst. In the end of David’s reign no amount of
grandeur of his kingdom can suffice to eclipse the tragedy that struck his own family.

Nowadays, there is so much disunity in families. Many people are hurting and resenting each
other because of the failures of families to remain as one. And the crumbling down of families have
its riffling effect to the society. Unity in the family is significant because a church, community and
country can only be as strong as its family.

It is important for families to go back to where it will serve best and look best. It is

.
important to go back to the beauty of family togetherness. With the increasing factor that

nc
disintegrate the family, a conscious effort should be done in order to arrest the problem.

UNIT 2: WE BUILD RELATIONSHIPS

,I
Lesson 1: We Show Respect

Objectives:

• learn about being respectful,

up
ro
• describe a respectful person, and

• identify ways to show respect to your family members.

lG

Values Focus: Respect

Lesson Scripture – Leviticus 19:3, “Each of you, must respect his mother and his father.”
ba

Biblical Background:

As one has to honor God, he or she has to honor also the people God brought to his or her life
for guidance and care. Parents are the extension of God’s love and leadership at home. They serve
Vi

as its provider and protector. That role is divine since it comes from God. That responsibility
should be recognized because that is according to God’s design. Respecting parents is like
respecting God.

In return to the important role and responsibility parents hold in the family, children need to
pay them respect. It is so important that God included it to the Ten Commandments that the
people of God should obey. God is implying that as the people of Israel are beginning to build their
nation, they need to establish their relationship to God and to their parents. Only then can they
have a peaceful life.

During the time of Moses, failure to observe the commandment to respect one’s parents is
punishable by death. That is how God is adamant in showing respect to our parents.

This commandment is given with a promise. That whoever will commit it to life will live a
long life. Perhaps each country has its unique way of showing respect to parents. It can be
verbal or by actions. And with the modernization of society, these gestures are sometimes put in

.
the sidelight. But to God, respect for parents always comes first.

Lesson 2: We Are Responsible

Objectives:

• describe a responsible person.

• show ways to be responsible.

up
recognize the importance of being responsible, and
ro
Values Focus: Responsible

Lesson Scripture – Colossians 3:23a, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart.”
lG

Biblical Background:

Responsibility is a part of human being’s life and growth. As a person matures, he or she has
to tackle greater responsibilities. The issue of responsibility should be taught within the household.
One has to work. And one has to be good at his work.
ba

More so with people who profess to be followers of God. It is no wonder why in the book of
Colossians, the whole household, the father, mother and children, including the househelp, are
Vi

reminded to be responsible for each other and in their occupation. According to the writer of
Colossians one must commit to heart whatever he is doing.

One does not stop with his work unless his heart is happy and satisfied. One does not stop his
assignment unless he is able to touch other people’s hearts.

The Bible also teaches that any work is worthy of respect and excellence. The biblical verse
puts high value even to the work of a househelp. The Bible implies that there is no menial job when
done with a willing heart.
The household is a good setting to teach each other the issue of responsibility. Through words
and actions, members of the household especially the children can be exposed and trained to be
responsible.

Lesson 3: We Are Thankful

Objectives:

• thank for the goodness, love and kindness we receive from our family .

.
nc
• identify ways to be thankful to our families and other people, and

• express thankfulness in many ways.

Values Focus: Thankful

,I
Lesson Scripture – 1 Thessalonians 5:18a, “Whatever happens, always be thankful.”

up
ro
Biblical Background:

Bad things happen to good people. Misfortunes strike even to those who are faithful to God.
But even If one cannot control what will come his way, one has a choice to remain thankful in spite
lG

of everything. This is what Paul wrote to the believers in Colossians, “Whatever happens, always
be thankful.”

Paul himself had been through bad times in spite of his being a good disciple. His goodness
ba

did not spare him from suffering difficulties in the hands of those who opposed his mission. But
Paul chose to rejoice and be grateful knowing that God will turn the bad times into good to
advance his mission.
Vi

Being thankful at all times does not mean one has to rejoice and welcome the bad things. It
only means that one is grateful to the constant presence of God no matter what the situation is.
That God will never leave him nor forsake him as He promised.

Being thankful is trusting God that His presence in all one’s life situations will empower Him
to work for the betterment of one’s plight. A firm belief that all will go well afterwards.

Misfortunes can happen to two people but only the more grateful one can manage to remain
calm, happy and determined even in the midst of misfortune.

People need to be grateful all the time because God is there all the time.

Lesson 4: We Care for Others

Objectives:

• learn a story about caring for other people,

• understand how other people feel in different situations, and

.
nc
• show ways how to care for others at all times and in all places.

Values Focus: Caring for others

Lesson Scripture – Philippians 2:4, “Care about them as much as you care about

,I
yourselves.”

Biblical Background:
up
Philippians 2 discusses about the humility that Jesus Christ exemplified when He was here on
earth. And any follower of Jesus Christ needs to do the same; humbling himself to God and to other
people.
ro
When a person is humble, it is not difficult for him to care about other people. He feels
uncomfortable being in a position that will put him greater than the rest. Instead, he will choose a
lG

place of service. While other people are racing their way to climb to the top and experience what
it means to be admired and idolized by people, Jesus Christ’s followers seek the smallest position to
better serve the people from the lowest status in society. One cannot express care if he is busy
beautifying himself.
ba

The Lord that believers follow is a caring Lord. He puts away his highest position, that of
being the Son of God, went down on earth as a baby and lived among the people. During his
ministry on earth, Jesus served the lost, least and the last of society.
Vi

This world right now is full of people busy winning the rat race. Oftentimes, caring for people
are deemed to be a waste of time, if not, a deterrent to someone in reaching his goal in life.

This lesson will point the students that the end goal of the Christian life is to care for others.

Lesson 5: We Are Honest

Objectives:

• understand the word “honesty,”

• describe an honest person, and

• show ways how to become an honest person.

Values Focus: Honesty

Lesson Scripture – Psalm 34:13, “Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips
from telling lies.”

.
Biblical Background:

nc
Psalm 34 begins by telling how good God is. “Taste and see that Lord, He is good,” writes the
psalmist. It encourages people to discover and experience God’s righteousness. With the many
incomparable and noble characteristics of God, one is expected to voluntary testify about it. The

,I
mouth of a believer should be full of praises and thanksgiving to God.

When the lips of a believer is filled with testimonies of God’s goodness, no amount of lie has a

up
place in his speech. Words of praise and lie cannot come out from the same mouth at the same
time.

Once a person truly seeks the things of God, deceits and lies will depart from his mind and
ro
heart. And when the tendency to do the opposite comes, God’s kindness is enough to remind a
person of the true use of his mouth. And when one insists in telling a lie, one cannot experience
the presence of God because God is a personification of the truth. Therefore, to lie is to go against
lG

God. Lying is against the truth and therefore is against God.

Nobody can go against and win over the truth. The light of the truth will always expose the
lie. This lesson aims to encourage the learners to always choose to be honest because when one is

honest, he always win.

Lesson 6: We Are Sincere

Vi

Objectives:

• describe a sincere person,

• appreciate a person’s sincerity, and

• show sincerity in words and action.

Values Focus: Sincere

Lesson Scripture – 1 John 3:18, “Dear children, Let us not love with words or speech, but
with actions and in truth.”

Biblical Background:

Words and actions are what sincerity is composed of. Sincerity is the theme of the biblical
verse in this lesson. John wrote the believers to urge them to be sincere. Love like sincerity need

.
not be divided. Loving words should be coupled by loving actions.

nc
And who in the world should be sincere and loving? Those who profess that they are
followers of God. Sadly, there came a point in the life of the believers that their faith and love

,I
were reduced to mere words. They reached to a point where verbal expression is the only way they
convey love. They forgot that love is an action word. It should not only be heard but also felt.

up
And what was the exact reason of John’s letter to the believers? They were giving the needy
brothers and sisters words of hope but letting them go empty handed. They were saying to them, “I
love you” but could not commit by saying, “I will help you.”

Oftentimes, it is better not to say anything at all than to shower other people with words of
ro
love or sugar coated words and yet remain mere words.

UNIT 3: WE ARE CALLED TO BE GOOD

Vi

Lesson 1: We are Respectful

Objectives:

• recognize the importance of showing respect and obedience to parents and the elderly, and
• name ways to show respect and obedience to parents and the elderly.

Values Focus: Respect

Lesson Scripture - Leviticus 19:32, “Show respect to the elderly.”

Biblical Background:

Leviticus 19 tells about God meeting with His people on the mountain to prepare them before

.
they settle to the Promised Land. He gave them various commandments thru His prophet Moses,

nc
that will be their guide in living to a new land.

One important law has something to do with dealing with the elderly, “Show respect to the
elderly.” God implies to His people about the vulnerability of people of old age. That as such,

,I
they are prone to abuse by the stronger and more able young. Aware of this tendency, God ensures
the protection of the elderly by making it into law, the respect for the elders.

up
First, respect the elderly for their wisdom. Since they live ahead of the younger generation,
all the accumulated learnings and experiences they acquired in life need to be recognized. The
saying,”Experience is the best teacher” befit them the most.
ro
Second, respect the elderly for their weakness. Weakness here refers to the state or
condition of their bodies. They are no longer as strong and as able as they used to be so careful
consideration on that part should be exercised by the younger generation.
lG

Third, respect them for their worth. God Himself recognized their place in the community.
And He made the people aware of that.

Lesson 2: We Are Obedient
ro

Objectives:
lG

• understand the importance of being obedient at home and in school, and

• show obedience in school.

ba

Values Focus: Obedience

Lesson Scripture – Hebrews 13:17, “Obey the elder and follow their orders.”
Vi

Biblical Background:

Paul commanded the believers to obey and follow the elders in the church. Becoming an
elder in the church is not easy. It requires a strict moral standard to become one. Paul explains
further that church elders are accountable for the spiritual life of believers under their care. They
are entrusted with a task here on earth which has a heavenly magnitude.

Paul teaches the believers to give a high regard to their church leaders. With that herculean
task, Paul urges the cooperation of the believers by following their orders. Although they are not
perfect, it is believed that elders are God’s extension of leadership in the church, family and
community. Therefore, their orders are perceived to be coming from God Himself.

Inside the household, grandparents and parents are considered the elders. And as such they
also deserve the obedience of the younger folks. Their orders need to be considered as wise and
valuable to the general welfare of the household.

.
Without respect and obedience to the elders, a household will run in chaos. Everybody will

Lesson 3: We have Rights

,I
Objectives:

• Identify some of the basics children’s rights,

up
give examples of how we enjoy these rights, and

show the importance of these rights and explain them.

ro
Values Focus: Rights

Lesson Scripture – Matthew 18:10, “See that you do not despise one of these little
lG

ones.”

Biblical Background:

Children have rights too. Just because children lack the ability to speak for and provide
ba

for themselves does not mean adults can already do what they wish and want for the children.
They may be small in stature but they are big in the eyes of God. It is precisely why the Bible
commanded its readers not to “despise the little ones.” Adults have to learn that these rights come
from God Himself and therefore have to be honored and practiced.
Vi

The tone of the biblical verse is emphatic. It is not a request but a requirement.
Followers of God need to learn how to care about those people God is concern about, especially the
children.

God sees the potential in each child and He would like to nourish, nurture and protect
what they can become someday.
Children are not as keen to defend their rights as the adults do, thus, He entrusted it to
the care of adults. And Jesus warned the believers to protect the children well. Another way that
adults can protect the rights of the children is to make the children aware of their rights. This
would help the children not to despise themselves being children but to see themselves as people
worthy of care and protection. Despising the little ones is like despising God Himself.

Objectives:

• describe how you can show being responsible for your rights, and

.
nc
• tell, using a story, how you exercise your rights

Values Focus: Value your rights

Lesson Scripture – James 1:17, “Every good and perfect gift is from God.”

,I
Biblical Background:

up
Children are God’s gift to humanity. Children’s rights are God’s gifts to children in order to
protect the gift of childhood and the promise to adulthood.

Children’s rights are as valuable as the children themselves. And as children are prone to
ro
abuse, so are their rights. Valuing their rights is one of the tasks that children and their guardians
should always be conscious of. These rights are inspired from the gift of childhood from God and
must be revered to the highest level.
lG

The key biblical verse says that “Every good and perfect gift is from God.” One cannot afford
to take this rare gift for granted. The author of James teaches the believers that blessings should
always be regarded as good, enough and are from God.
ba

The believers whom James wrote to were experiencing persecutions or severe hardships. And
they were tempted to think that it is God’s way of dealing with them. But James discouraged the
believers to entertain that thought. He made them see that they were recipients of God’s goodness
Vi

and power.

Again, children have rights. These are precious God given rights. Children need to know
their rights, learn how to protect it and fully enjoy it.

lG

Objectives:
ba

Vi

• dramatize the conversation between Mary and Jesus.

Values Focus: Peace and order

Lesson Scripture – Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called
children of God.”

Biblical Background:
The key biblical verse above is part of what is known as The Beatitudes or The Sermon on
the Mount by Jesus Christ. It is Jesus’ vision for all His followers and would be followers. Jesus
calls people to become peacemakers.

Jesus knows how important peace is in the lives of people and communities. Life can only
proceed with the presence of peace. Without it, life will just rot in circles.

Peace does not come right away. With the differences arise between and among people,

.
chaos and disorder are inevitable. This is the reason why Jesus talks about being a “peacemaker.”

nc
Jesus calls the peacemakers as blessed because bringing peace to people is a divine calling and
vocation. Putting harmony and unity among people is not an easy task.

Real peace comes from God. It is different from the peace found in this world. In John 14:27,

,I
Jesus said, “ Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do
not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”.

therefore called, “God’s children.” up

Objectives:
up
• show ways by which you can take care of the environment,
ro
• identify ways to help maintain cleanliness at home and in the school, and
lG

• thank God for His wonderful creation.

Values Focus: Care for the environment

Lesson Scripture - Genesis 2:15, “The Lord God put the man in the garden of Eden to
ba

care for it and work it.”

Biblical Background:
Vi

God is not only concern about the welfare of human beings but also of his surroundings.
Environment has something to do with the well-being of its habitat. A healthy environment benefits
the settlers and responsible dwellers nurture the environment.

There are two reasons why God put human beings in the garden. First is to care for it and
second is to work it.

Taking care of the environment is ensuring that the very existence of all God’s creation is
sustained. No creatures should come to extinction because it will affect the lives of other
creatures. That is what we call the interdependence of life.

The second reason is to work the environment. God is not opposed to progress. It is part of
the stewardship He entrusted to human beings. The biblical key verse tells that human beings
should “work it.” It suggests that changes and improvements can be done to the environment as
long as it does not endanger the life of all creatures but cultivate it.

.
Although the present generation is more detached from the environment that the old

nc
generation had previously witnessed and enjoyed, they are not left without having any
responsibility to the environment. This is what the lesson aims to inculcate to the learners mind.
That they can still take care of the environment in their own way.

ro
Objectives:
lG

• appreciate your parents and elders who teach you how to pray .

• understand that prayer is a way of talking to God,

ba

• pray for yourself and for others sincerely, and

• make your own prayer to God.

Vi

Values Focus: Prayerful

Lesson Scripture – Luke 11:1b, “Lord, teach us to pray.”

Biblical Background:

There must be something different in the way Jesus prayed so that his disciples were
encouraged to ask him to teach them to pray. Prior to becoming Jesus’ disciples, these men had
also their religion that employ much prayer in their rituals and religious practices.
But there is so much to prayer than that. The disciples felt it. They knew that they still lack
something in the area of prayer. And it is Jesus who can supply it.

Jesus teach what is now known as The Lord’s Prayer:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
 Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
 on earth as
10

it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our debts,
 as we also have
11 12

forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.
13

.
By calling God as Father, Jesus is teaching us that more than the exchange of words, prayer is

nc
about relationship, between a parent and a child. Being a child, one has to acknowledge his
parent’s authority over him. So, prayer is not just a matter of asking but allowing God to have his
way. Only after affirming the relationship and authority one has with God can that person expect

,I
from God’ provision.

Moreover, prayer is about relationship with one’s fellow. Jesus taught about praying in behalf

up
of other people; providing, forgiving and protecting them.

Prayer has a tendency to be misunderstood and abused. Therefore, learners should be guided
with the purpose and potential of praying hands.

Lesson 2: We Belong to a Church

Objectives:
ro
• describe the church, where you belong,
lG

• help name the things you see in the church, and

• tell how you feel when you are in the church

Values Focus: Belonging to a church

ba

Lesson Scripture – Acts 2:46, “Day after day, they met together in the temple (church
building).”
Vi

Biblical Background:

Belongingness is one of the significant needs of a human being. Nobody is created to live
alone. There must be someone or something that a person can identify with. People need to
belong to a family, community or a church.

The history of the early church shows that there is a strong spirit of belongingness among
them. They met daily in the temple and do their spiritual disciplines together everyday. How they
are able to bond together everyday? Well, it is because churches during early times are by
household or “house church.” It is unlike to what we have today, a separate building, small or big,
solely used for church’s function. Although the church venues are evolving in time, the reason for
their gathering remains the same, that is, to belong to each other.

Next to one’s family is the church family. It is in the church where one can find another
mother and father, brother and sister. It is also in the church where one can find care and concern.

.
This lesson teaches the student to appreciate the church where they are in. it can also

encourage others to try to join a church for a strong sense of belongingness. It can also challenge
the one who is already belong to a church to seek more people who feel detached and isolated by

Values Focus: Being good

up
Lesson Scripture – Acts 2:42, “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching
and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”
ro
Biblical Background:

The early church lived their lives for each other and for other people. Most of what one can
lG

read in the latter part of Acts 2 is the word, “they.” It implies that the early church puts so much
importance in communing and cooperation. They were fond of sharing things with others. Because
of this, it is said that nobody was poor among them. They were neither rich nor poor because of
their willingness to share. There is no greater description of the goodness of their fellowship than
ba

to have no poor among them. That is the mark that one is doing something good, by making all
people feel in equality with each other.

The early church started that way and that is the way they should be. Believers are
Vi

empowered by God to empower other people especially the needy. It is important for learners to
rediscover the purpose of the church, that is, loving other people and doing good to them.

It is by living in unity with other people that the church exemplify the life of Christ. It is by
helping the helpless were the love and presence of God are becoming evident. And whenever that
is manifested in a church, people cannot help but go to church and follow God.

Objectives:

• name other religions in the country,

ba

• show respect to people whose religion is different than ours.

Values Focus: Respect

Vi

Lesson Scripture – Acts 2:46, “People who belong to a particular religion shared a
common purpose and they spend their time together in the church.”

Biblical Background:

Because of the undeniable unity, love and cooperation among the early believers, people
from other beliefs learned to respect the early church.
Respect from other faith is one of the indications that a church is doing the right thing. One
can read in the story how the early church is increasing in number and gaining the approval of other
people from other faith perhaps.

Christianity was still a budding religion that time. Many established religions have come
before it. But because of the genuineness of the early church’s faith and practice, many people
had shown them favor and goodwill.

.
New beliefs and faith practice are still emerging nowadays. The only favorable response to it

nc
is that of welcome and respect. In spite of differences in manner and doctrines, different religions
need to manage to co-exist among each other. After all, we are all seekers of God.

Respect for one’s religion is a very important lesson today. Added to that is the

,I
acknowledgment that one does not have the monopoly of truth and beliefs. Everybody can learn
from each other’s faith.

Lesson 6: Our Hopes Come from God

Objectives:

.
• read story about faith and hope in God,

nc
• share an experience of hope, and

• thank the people who gives us hope.

,I
Values Focus: Hope

up
Lesson Scripture – Psalm 62:5b, “… my hope comes from Him.”

Biblical Background:

When people are out there to take away not only one’s position but also his life, what would
ro
one feel? David was that person. Many wanted his crown. Many wanted him dead. With no hope
found in people, David turned to God. “… my hope comes from Him,” he declared.
lG

The desire of David’s enemies to snatch the crown from him clearly tells where people place
their hope. They trust in the strength and power of one’s position. They thought that being a king
would solidify one’s tenure and would make them invincible.
ba

One may not be in a situation similar to David’s but most people, if not all, find themselves in
a hopeless situation also in one time or another. And it is possible that during that time, nobody can
offer hope.
Vi

And just like David, difficult times can be an opportunity to know God as one’s only hope. He
wrote in Psalm 20:27(NIV), “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of
the Lord our God.”

In life, people are aware that help may not come right away. But what makes people
persevere is the thought that there is hope to their situation especially if that hope is in God. This
lesson is about hope is important to be taught to a person because nobody is spared from tragedy in
this life.
