LORENZA BADIELLO
DIRECTOR, DELEGATION OF THE EMILIA ROMAGNA REGION TO
THE EU
Lorenza Badiello is the director of the Emilia-Romagna Region Delegation to the EU.
Before her current role, she was head of ASTER EU Office (Emilia Romagna Technological
Development Agency) and prior to that, she held a post as a researcher for NOMISMA in
Bologna. Badiello had lectured at a number of European universities on the topic of EU
integration. She holds a MBA from Profingest, MA in international relations and political
strategy from the University of Kent and post graduate diplomas from the Universitè Libre
G U E S T S

de Bruxelles. Badiello was awarded the decoration of Cavaliere - Knight of the Order of
Merit of the Italian Republic in 2018.

STEPHANE BERGHMANS
VICE PRESIDENT ACADEMIC AND RESEARCHER RELATIONS
EU, ELSEVIER
In his position at Elsevier, Stephane Berghmans is responsible for building and further
developing relationships with academic institutions and EU representatives. He plays an
essential role in educating stakeholders in the European scientific and political landscape
on how Elsevier, and modern scientific information providers in general, can add value to
further developing projects and policy in these areas.

PETER DRÖLL
DIRECTOR, INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGIES, DG RTD,
EUROPEAN COMMISSION
Peter Dröll has been working in the European Commission for more than 20 years in
positions including financial control of the Joint Research Centre, enforcement of EU
environmental legislation, accession negotiations with Poland and coordination of the
environment negotiations with all accession countries, innovation policy and European
research area policy. He was a Cabinet member of enlargement Commissioner Günter
Verheugen and Head of Cabinet of the science and research Commissioner Janez Potocnik.
Dröll joined the Directorate-General Research and Innovation in 2010, where he was first
responsible for innovation and then 2016, for industrial technologies.

MANAGING DIRECTOR, SCIENCE|BUSINESS
Maryline Fiaschi is the managing director of Science|Business. After six years managing
EU education programmes with the European Commission, Maryline entered the media
business in 2007. She held business development positions at Shanghai Daily and EU
affairs media company EurActiv. She joined Science|Business in 2011 where she now
leads the company’s operations and growth strategy. She is also an external evaluator
for several EU higher education and research and innovation programmes. Maryline holds
degrees from Université La Sorbonne, Università di Bologna and Université de Louvain.

JAAP LOMBAERS
INNOVATION DIRECTOR, TNO; MEMBER, EXECUTIVE BOARD,
PHOTONICS21
Jaap Lombaers is innovation director of TNO, where he works in the fields of flexible
electronics (Holst Centre), thin-film photovoltaics (Solliance) and additive manufacturing /
3D Printing. He has co-founded many initiatives including thin-film photovoltaics operating
along the open innovation concept of Holst Centre (Solliance), the Brightlands Materials
Center focusing on polymer-based innovations, and the AMSYSTEMS Centre which
focuses on working with industries in the field of additive manufacturing / 3D printing.
Lombaers started his career as a researcher at TNO’s Human Factors institute, and now
he is a member of the executive board at Photonics21, vice-chairman of the Organic

Electronics Association, member of the board of Solliance and of Brightlands Materials


Centre, member of the steering committee of Holst Centre, and member of EMIRI.

COLETTE MALONEY
HEAD OF UNIT, COMPETITIVE ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY,
DG CNECT, EUROPEAN COMMISSION
Colette Maloney is head of the competitive electronics industry unit at the European
Commission’s DG CNECT. Prior to this, Maloney was Head of the photonics unit, whose
mission is to reinforce Europe’s industrial and technology leadership in photonics from
light sources like laser-based technology to light-based information processing, including
bio-photonics, organic photonics and photonic integrated components. Since joining the
European Commission in 1994, Maloney had held various positions including Head of the
cognitive systems and robotics unit, ICT for sustainable growth unit, and smart cities and

sustainability unit.

EVDOXIA NERANTZI
GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS COORDINATOR, MICROSOFT
Evdoxia Nerantzi is EU government affairs coordinator at Microsoft in Brussels. Prior to
this, Nerantzi was a Blue Book trainee at the Education Audiovisual and Culture Executive
Agency of the European Commission. Nerantzi received a Master’s degree in technology
and education from University College London, where she attended in parallel with courses
in political sciences at London School of Economics. She completed her Bachelor’s degree
in social sciences & humanities at the University of Thessaly in Greece.

MARK NICKLAS
HEAD OF UNIT, INNOVATION POLICY AND INVESTMENT FOR
GROWTH, DG GROW, EUROPEAN COMMISSION
Mark Nicklas is head of the innovation policy and investment for growth unit in the
European Commission’s DG Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs. His
unit leads the Commission’s renewed EU industrial policy strategy.From 2012 to 2016, he
was deputy head of the innovation policy for growth unit. Before that, he was assistant
to the European SME Envoy and Director-General for Enterprise and Industry. Prior to
joining the Commission in 2003, he held various posts in the telecommunications industry
in Germany.

EUROPEAN COMMISSION
Demos Spatharis heads the unit in the European Commission’s DG Competition in charge
of state aid policy and control in the areas of R&D&I, environment and employment.
Previously Spatharis headed a unit in DG Trade in charge of anti-dumping and anti-
subsidy investigations against unfairly low-priced imports. Before joining the Commission
he worked in the private sector.

Bernd Stowasser is global head of public-private partnerships alliance management at


Sanofi and head of alliance management at Sanofi Germany. He represents Sanofi at the
EFPIA Innovative Medicines Strategy Priority Working Group and participates in multiple
open innovation and ecosystem-related industry activities. In 2008, Stowasser was
appointed as senior director of prospective and strategic initiatives in Sanofi.

Walter Vermeiren is manager of scientific and technology intelligence in the corporate R&D
department of Total. He joined Total in 1994 and worked previously in the catalysis group
of Total Petrochemicals Research in Feluy, Belgium for 11 years, followed by a position as
business developer in the “base chemicals” department, and as head of new technologies
in the refining and petrochemical department. He holds several scientific publications and
patents in the field of petrochemicals and received the Total Petrochemical RDT award in
2005 and 2007.

SPECIAL ADVISOR, SCIENCE|BUSINESS
Carlos Härtel is special advisor at Science|Business. Härtel, currently an independent
innovation-strategy advisor and chair of the supervisory board of GE Power AG, was
previously chief technology and innovation officer of GE Europe, and president and CEO
of the company’s German subsidiary. He was also, from 2013 to 2017, president of the
European Industrial Research Managers Association.
