POSITION PAPER

Prevention of Drug Abuse

Paracetamol, Marijuana, Aspirin, Cocaine, Heroin, all these fancy words, they are drugs
all different types of drugs. All of these which have a different effect on our body but they all do the
same, change the way the body reacts. There are two types of drugs the illegal and legal, legal
drugs are ones such as paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofen and many more and illegal drugs are
marijuana, heroin, cocaine and etc.

Drugs are chemicals that affect the body and brain. Different drugs can have different
effects. Some effects of drugs include health consequences that are long-lasting and permanent.
They can even continue after a person has stopped taking the substance. Illegal drug use is greatly
hurting our adolescents today, and in their future. It is in the mind of every parents and public
alike. Yet with the scare of hurting the lives of the future, why is it that the government is not
doing anything about it? From the start of the discovery of marijuana, cocaine, and other illicit
drugs, the public has noticed the negative outcomes and consequences of using them. They are
illegal for a reason. Through personal observation, teens from age thirteen and up (sometimes
even younger), already have the peer pressure to smoke, drink, be violent and be sexually active.
Although all are harmful, taking a step forward by preventing illegal drugs from getting into the
system of children in the future may help to stop the causes of the other pressures. Proposing to
stop it from the start, may cause the mainstream trend of drugs to come to a halt. Stopping and
convicting people who distribute the drugs is a good way to help stop the spread of the
substances, but more money needs to go to preventing it. By added demands for prevention
through media, parental support, and government laws, illegal drugs may become a scare of the
past, not a trend for the future.

Through all this, prevention will make the biggest impact on a young child’s mind. They will
never forget the pledge they make at their graduation ceremony, to not do drugs, or an
advertisement seen on TV. Although it may not stop every child from caving into the peer pressure
or curiosity, it will help to minimize the growing rate of children to try drugs in general. There is
also an understanding, that illegal drugs are good for the economy to keep moving, but at the same
time, the government is spending the money they earn, on the health effects of drugs. Focusing
more on prevention, will not only save money, but make a bigger impact, because the less children
looking for drug providers, the less profit they gain, and less of them around. It’s all a domino
effect, but in a positive direction. Now it’s time for the media, parents and government to take
their position, and eliminate this ongoing problem. Children need to be protected, and by
protecting them, the less drug abusers in the coming future.

“The Fatal Consequence of Depression”

By: Dr. Nina Halili-Jao

Depression is the common cold of mental disorders. Most people will be affected by
depression in their lives either directly or indirectly, through a friend or family member. People is
confuse with regard to what depression exactly is and what makes it different from just feeling
down. Depression can happen in all social classes, in people of every age and educational and
occupational levels. Many still cannot seem to understand how persons who are rich and famous
still choose the option to end their lives when they apparently have everything.

If depression left untreated, it can have serious and sometimes long-term

consequences that can affect every aspect of your life. Fortunately, depression is treatable. By
getting help from psychologists and especially reaching out to people that can help you can
prevent these complications:
First is suicide, having thoughts of death and suicide are symptoms of depression. If
depression is left untreated, these thoughts can get worse. Sometimes, you or a friend might feel
like suicide is the only way out, the only way to escape the pain. This isn’t true. There are many
effective ways to reduce depression symptoms and get better. Remember, these terrible feelings
and thoughts are not constant and will pass. If you or someone you know is having thoughts of
suicide, please get help immediately. Second is addiction to drugs and alcohol, the truth is that
drugs and alcohol not only worsen symptoms, but they can also increase the chances that you get
addicted to these substances. Combining drugs and alcohol with depression is a dangerous mix,
which can increase the risk for suicide and further your depression. Third is hurting yourself,
another way some people try to cope with depression is by hurting themselves or inflicting pain
upon themselves with methods like cutting. With these behaviors, serious or life-threatening
injuries and accidental deaths can result. Fourth is relationships problems, consider how your
relationships suffer when you’re stressed out. You might lash out at loved ones, stop going to
social events or just want to be left alone. Depression leaves people drained emotionally, mentally
and physically, so it becomes hard to be there for friends and family. Last is health concerns,
depression can become an unhealthy cycle. People with depression need to take good care of
themselves to feel better, but because of the symptoms, they are unable to sleep or sleep too much,
don’t want to eat and have no interest in exercise. Because they are unable or unwilling to do
these things, the depression worsens and health suffers. When we don’t take care of ourselves it
can leave us vulnerable to other illnesses or just worsen the health condition.

However, there is a range of effective treatments and health professionals who can
help people on the road to recovery. It is important to seek support as early as possible, as the
sooner a person gets treatment, the sooner they can recover. There are also many things that
people with depression can do for themselves to help them recover and stay well. The important
thing is to find the right treatment and the right health professional for a person’s needs.
BOOK REVIEW

THE LITTLE PRINCE

by: Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

The Little Prince originally in French, Le Petit Prince is an enchanting little tale about an
aviator’s chance meeting with a little boy who happens to be visiting Earth from another planet.
The aviator crashes in the Sahara desert and damages his airplane to the point where he cannot fly
any longer. Left with little food and water, the aviator ponders his predicament. As he worries, he
is approached by a young and serious blond boy; the two become friends.

The boy reveals that he is from a planet where he is true blue royalty – a prince. On his
planet, the prince prevents bad seeds from growing and ensures they are never overrun by
baobab trees. He is happy on his planet, until the wind sows a seed for him and out springs a
lovely, mysterious rose. The prince loses his head and heart to the flower that not unlike all the
other beautiful and lovely creatures on Earth and elsewhere is vain and tormenting. Then one day
he catches the rose in a lie and determined he could not trust her anymore. Disenchanted with
love, he decides to leave his planet to remedy his loneliness and find the real meaning of life.

Since this time, the prince has visited six different planets and recounts his many
encounters. The prince met adults for the first time in his life during his adventure. The book
dwells upon the innocence and wisdom of childhood that begins to fade into ‘intelligence’ and
craftiness as we grow-up. The prince insists that ‘grown-ups’ make the world more complicated
than it actually should be. Giant wisdom from a puny little prince! Eventually, the prince makes it
to Earth where among other things he stumbles upon a rose garden; this surprises and upsets him
he believed his rose was one-of-a-kind.

The wisest advice is bestowed upon the prince from believe it or not a ‘canny’ fox! The
fox teaches him the important things in life are visible only to the heart. The fox proposes that
time away from the rose has made the prince’s heart grow fonder. And most importantly, love
makes a person responsible for object of that love. The little prince realizes even though there are
many like roses, his love for his rose makes her unique. Healed and made wise, the prince decides
it is time to make his way home.

The book speaks to the child in each one of us. He talks a child’s language, follows their
idiom, feels their sorrow and loneliness and ultimately triumphs in their search for poetic justice.
There is a clever play on the word “Little” it helps us enter the children’s world and experience it
through their eyes. In the process, we discover happiness in the ordinary, mundane things, that we
usually put aside as adults. Indeed, it is easy to get so caught up in the mad rush of a daily
existence, that we conveniently forget that there could be more to life than chasing a job, worry
over a meeting, an appointment or the next salary raise.
