Annabel has spent her whole life in
isolation, along with every other
person in this society governed by
an oppressive law forbidding human
contact. Murmurs of a mysterious
biological war from the past seem to be
to blame.
To access a new tier of living perks,
Annabel must first complete The
Passion Protocol - a government program
responsible for wellbeing. Another young
woman, Coral, vivacious and dreamy,
steps through the door into Annabel’s
living space, having been assigned as
partners.
Guided by a dated orientation video
and a vague understanding of human
interaction, Annabel attempts the

concept of enjoying another person’s
company, but only for the allowed time.
Cautiously, the women ease their way
into the idea of touching one another.
Coral has experienced this before and is
clearly more comfortable and
excited while Annabel worries about the
outcome, fearing the sensation and risk
of the fabled decontamination procedure.
Eventually they acclimatise to
touching and the awkward barrier is
broken; conversation flows and they
begin to enjoy each other, sharing
stories about the ridiculousness of their
situation. Annabel opens up and reveals
the relatable human character
beneath their society’s conditioning; she
begins to feel herself.
After an unexpected kiss, Annabel
nervously allows Coral to touch her until
the fear evaporates completely and they
share a passionate kiss, undress each
other and make love. They don’t want
this moment to end and to go back to
their separate lives; why can’t they stay?
It isn’t until a sound indicates they’ve
outlasted their allotted time together
that Annabel realises what they’ve done;
the rules are broken. She attempts to
hurry Coral out before it becomes clear
it’s too late; the door is locked and the
decontamination procedure begins.
Faced with whatever happens next,
Annabel is glad they at least experienced
human touch and emotion together.

of their world; Annabel is obedient. She’s
particular and by-the-book; a creature of habit
who’s confident in what she knows. For Annabel,
The Passion Protocol is about completing a task
and she initially hides any nerves with a cold
demeanour. Her ark rounds off fully with her
realising how hollow life has been and shifting
her perspective on their purpose; acting as a
beacon of hope for Coral.

Coral yearns for something other. She wants
to push the boundaries and find out what lies
beyond. This is her perfect opportunity. She’s
very switched on, despite first exuding a
wide-eyed excitability. A loose cannon who
follows her imagination. This is dented when
she panics, thinking she’s pushed it too far
until the character comes full circle and unites
with Annabel when she realises she was always
right to question and to wonder.

 I believe in love above all; especially today
when we have so little towards one another.
We hear so little about love and compassion,
with the media focusing on hate and crime,
we forget the power love has to brighten a day
or make someone smile. By cutting love out
and showing how it manifests regardless, The
Passion Protocol is a social commentary about
a world we don’t want to find ourselves in.
This story has a beating heart with a contained
production around it. It’s minimal and doesn’t
distract from the relationship and emotions. It
allows the complexities of the characters to
be fleshed out and the subtle nuances of the
performances to shine under the spotlight. This
will creatively push me to direct my best work
by focusing on the acting, telling the story and
crafting the atmosphere in a single location.
Two female leads suggests Inti-Mate doesn’t
pair for reproduction or even consider gender
as sexual preference is redundant here. This

is relevant in 2019 with a high mainstream
awareness of genders and sexual orientations.
I worked with female writers because the script
demands a clear-cut female perspective. I also
approached two female producers as I knew
they would keep this in check throughout.
The Passion Protocol will develop into a TV
drama in order to fully reveal what happens
next to our characters beyond this short,
while exploring their world in more depth and
reaching a further resolution to their story.
I want to reach young adults who know
they have an uncertain future with today’s
climate and to emphasise that whatever
happens, love can always exist in even the most
desperate times. I want it to resonate with
viewers who know that when it’s there it can’t
be avoided, no matter what the rules are.

 Liam Hooper After making his first films aged
Director ten, Liam has directed a variety of films
spanning multiple genres including
fantasy, horror, sci-fi and drama. At The BRIT School of
Performing Arts, Liam learned the importance of a strong
team. He continues to direct for clients including Sony
and Warner Music, each with a focus on escaping reality.
Milly Wild Milly began in set design and studied Carol Van Carol studied in Belgium at the Institut
Writer creative writing and English literature.
This provided her the time and space to
explore different forms of writing and grasp a
more complete understanding of story. Milly has
written a short film for the BFI Film Academy and
music videos for the collaborative punk group Sh!t S!ck.

Hum Hum Specialising in Music Videos, Short
Films Production and Documentaries; Hum Hum
Production is a duo formed of Jeanne Scahaise &
Carol Van Hemelrijck. They have worked with a range
of talented artists and their work has been featured on
various online magazines. Their short films have been
showcased internationally and also broadcast online.
Hemelrijck des Arts de Diffusion before moving to
Writer London. Also a director, she has both
written shorts and adapted novels.
She is currently developing her first feature whilst writing
concepts for Music Videos. She’s always working on new
ideas and dreaming up new stories.
