Lesson Plan

5 Lead in? What is a memorable occasion? (Worth remembering/unforgettable, easily

remembered/ special event/ particular, social, gathering time. Time in your live worth
remembering)
Can you think of some examples of memorable occasions?

Lead in 2 Look at pictures and tell me what memorable occasion you think they are?

5 Gist task – Yes you’re right it’s a wedding, my wedding now read this text and tell me
whether you think it was a successful day. You can also think of some questions to ask
me if you want to know anything more…if you want to.
CHECKING Do I want you to read slowly and take in all the details? No quickly

7 Ok I’m going to give you some phrases from the text and I want you to find your
partner. So for example if you had walking down – the aisle. Once you’ve found them
make sure you understand meaning of your phrase.
CHECKING How will you know if you’ve found your partner?
CHECKING so once you’ve found your partner do you have to do anything else?
Wedding vows, first priority, bit of a blur, catch my breath, left, right and centre, split
second, moment of nervousness
Safina Katerina
John Marie Ifeoma
Aroosha Sylvia
Christophe Pin
Ying Gosha

Once they’ve done that they can explain their phrase to group then…
CHECK understanding of words.
So is a vow something you can change your mind about later?
Can you see everything clearly? Would I be able to remember everyone who was there?
Do I reach out and grab my breath? (Mime) What am I doing?
So is a split second a whole second? Is it less than a second? (Draw picture)
So is it something that I’ll get around to after I’ve done more important things?
Mime – if people are left right and centre am I surrounded?

7 OK these are words that go together… we call them collocations… I’ll explain it in
more detail in a minute but first I want you to go through the text with your partner and
try and underline more phrases or words that go together. You’ve got five minutes. If
necessary give example
Of course/I get on well/with my friends
CHECKING – So are you underlining all the words in the text? No just the ones that go
together.
Monitor to check understanding and check they’re getting it right.

Right in your pairs I want you to come up and highlight examples on board.
Then put up my example.

7 Ok like I said these are called collocations. Collocations are parts of language that go
together they can be nouns and nouns nouns and verbs adjectives and nouns adverbs and
verbs, verbs and prepositions etc… People who are learning English will often put words
together that are not grammatically wrong but to a native speaker they sound wrong
because we usually put other words together. For example we say white wine, you could
say yellow wine but it would sound really wrong/ Similarly we can say tall man but not
high man or big, large, great house but a great man is not the same as a big large man. A
Dr can perform an operation but you cannot perform a discussion we have strong tea but
a powerful car. Not strong care or powerful tea.

Best way to learn is to listen to lots of t.v./radio/native speakers or read extensively.

OK so let’s look at an example. Take a word like exam. What verbs can you use with
exam? Elicit take, pass, what’s opposite of pass? – fail, OK what about some adverbs if I
pass with no problems I pass easily/comfortably. What if I got 51 and pass mark was 50
then I just pass or if 49 I just fail. A really good place to look is a collocation dictionary.
On board see an example. Highlight adverb, adjective, noun, preposition and hand out
full version.

CHECKING So Safina can you tell me a preposition I could use with exam? Katerina can
you tell me a verb I could use with exam? What about a sentence?

7 OK I want to practise this some more so we are going to go back to the memorable
occasions what memorable occasions did we have? Birthday, wedding, holiday, first day
at school, Easter, Eid etc… birth of a child. Ok so what are some words that come to
mind when you think about holiday… brain storm for various ones. So if you wanted to
find some more collocations what could you do? Elicit look up relax, fun etc.. for
holiday. OK in your pairs I want you to pick a memorable occasion from the board and
brainstorm onto this paper some words that go together/collocations.

12 Monitor…. Ok once you’ve done that I want you to use some of those words to write
a short paragraph about a personal memorable occasion.

5 Ok now I want you to pull out five important phrases from your text and write them on
this card… you’re going to use those words as prompts to tell a partner about your
memorable occasion.

5 Then turn card over and write phrases again only three times. Repeat activity
