Earthquake Resistant Structures

Time: 3 hrs. Max. Marks: 80

Note: Answer FIVE full questions, choosing
ONE full question from each module.
2. Any revealing of identification, appeal to evaluator and /or equations written eg, 42+8 = 50, will be treated as malpractice.

Module-1
1 a. What are the causes and sources of earthquakes? (06 Marks)
b. Explain the plate tectonic theory for the origin of earthquakes. (05 Marks)
c. What are the types of seismic waves? (05 Marks)
Important Note : 1. On completing your answers, compulsorily draw diagonal cross lines on the remaining blank pages.

OR
2 a. Explain the different ground motion characteristics. (06 Marks)
b. What are the basic difference between magnitude and intensity? (05 Marks)
c. Explain the concept of base isolation and applications in structural design. (05 Marks)

Module-2
3 a. Explain the construction procedure of elastic and in elastic design spectrum. (06 Marks)
b. A four storeyed RCC – SMRF residential building has two equal spans of 5m in both x and
y – directions. The height of each story is 3.5m. Evaluate the base shear and determine the
lateral force distribution on each floor. Take live load as 3.5 kN/m2. The columns are of size
250  450 mm. The beams are 250  400 mm and slabs of 100 mm thick. Consider 250mm
thick brick masonry wall along x–direction and 150 mm thick brick masonry along
y–direction. The soil type is hard rock. The location is Delhi. Neglect the influence of
stiffness of the masonry in fill in the computation of natural period. (10 Marks)

4 A residential building of RCC – SMRF founded on soft soil and situated in zone V.
Determine the seismic forces by dynamic analysis procedure. Following data are the seismic
weights and Fre-vibration results of buildings.

Module-3
5 a. Explain the different vertical irregularities. (06 Marks)
b. What is soft storey effect and what are the IS codal provisions. (05 Marks)
c. What are the problems associated with the configuration of buildings and its possible
remedial measures. (05 Marks)
