PREFACE

This supplementary book is intended to give guidance to the activities which


should be undertaken by the students who join the Overseas Field Experience Program
‘Program Pengalaman Lapangan Luar Negeri (PPL LN)’ and the ways to undertake
them, starting from what they have to prepare to what they have to do when they finish
the program.
This book is written to support the Overseas Field Experience Program ‘PPL
LN”. Many thanks are expressed to those who have been involved in its completion.
It is expected that this book will be beneficial in leading the students to becoming
professional teachers. We owe a great debt of gratitude to those who have contributed
their thoughts for the completion of this book.

I. INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Essence of the Overseas Field Experience Program ‘PPL LN’

The Overseas Field Experience Program ‘Program Pengalaman Lapangan


Luar Negeri (PPL LN)’ is the accumulation or estuary of the pre-job educational
curriculum which is mandatory to be joined by the students as prospective teachers. The
program includes the guided and integrated training of teaching and the other educational
responsibilities apart from teaching which are expected to contribute to the fulfillment of
the formation of the matters pertaining to the teaching competence.

The matters pertaining to the teaching competence has been formed as early as
possible through the integrated and staged learning process which includes the Initial
Field Experience Program ‘PPL-Awal’, Micro Teaching, and a series of lecturing
materials provided using the approach of competence, namely the approach which is
oriented towards what is actually needed in the job opportunity chosen by the graduates
as their profession. Through the Overseas Field Experience Program ‘PPL LN’, which is
implemented through the apprenticeship system for about 1 month (more or less 4
weeks), it is expected that the students of Ganesha University of Education ‘Undiksha’
Singaraja can have four competencies as follows.

(1) Pedagogical Competence, the competence needed to totally manage the teaching
and learning process in order to obtain the optimal outcome.
(2) Professional Competence, the competence needed to master and comprehend
the scientific field chosen, the educational and learning field, and the other fields
which support the expertise chosen.
(3) Personal Competence, the competence related to the personal attitude, interest,
self-discipline as required by the ethics which a teacher should have when
undertaking his/her responsibility and tasks.
(4) Social Competence, the ability needed to supervise environment or to maintain a
good relationship between him/her and his/her school society or society in
general.

The four competencies mentioned above are essentially the ones which a teacher should
have and develop during his/her career.

1.2 The Objectives of the Overseas Field Experience Program ‘PPL LN’

The Overseas Field Experience Program ‘PPL LN’ is intended to:

(1) know the school’s physical, administrative, academic and socio-psychological


environments;
(2) master various basic teaching skills in the teaching and learning process;
(3) implement various teaching abilities in the real situation integratedly and intactly
(4) develop the social and personal aspects in the school environment; and
(5) develop the competence in the subject on which the prospective teacher is a
specialist;
(6) obtain experience and insights on teaching at overseas schools;
(7) understand the academic and non-academic culture of overseas schools.

1.3 The Significance of Overseas Field Experience Program ‘PPL LN’

Through the Overseas Field Experience Program ‘PPL LN’, the prospective
teacher is expected to:

(1) have the basic capital needed to develop the teaching competence with an
international perspective.
(2) have the competence needed to be competitive in finding job opportunities in the
ASEAN Economic Community era.
(3) become Undiksha’s cultural and educational ambassadors in other countries.

II. THE PREPARATION OF THE OVERSEAS FIELD EXPERIENCE


PROGRAM ‘PPL LN’

2.1 Selection of the Participants

The students who are eligible for participating in the Overseas Field Experience
Program ‘PPL LN’ are those who have fulfilled the following requirements.

(1) Having completed the microteaching course.


(2) Having cumulative achievement index minimum 3.2 (three point two).
(3) Having completed the Initial Field Experience Program ‘PPL-Awal’ with the
certificate of completion issued by the Quality Assurance and Learning
Development Center ‘Lembaga Pengembangan Pembelajaran dan Penjaminan
Mutu (LPPPM)’.
(4) Having successfully completed the oral and written English test.
(5) Being permitted by the parents.
(6) Signing the financing agreement.

2.2 Pre-Departure Briefing

Before leaving for the school where the students will practice teaching, a briefing
including the following materials is provided.
(1) Physical Preparation, which includes the physical health and performance, such
as the hairdo, make up application (should not be glaring), dark-white clothes,
almamater suit, and so forth as required by Undiksha and the schools where the
students will practice teaching.
(2) Mentality Preparation; which refers to the students’ mental readiness as
prospective teachers to appear in and outside the classroom as shown by
established self-confidence and ability to adjust themselves to the cross-cultural
situations.

2.3 Work Program Preparation

Prior to departure, the students should prepare the work program containing the
activities they will do while participating in the Overseas Field Experience Program
‘PPL LN’. The work program includes the following things.

(1) The academic (teaching), administrative, co-curricular, and extra-curricular


activities which will be joined and undertaken while participating in the Overseas
Field Experience Program ‘PPL LN’.
(2) Determining the schedule of the implementation of activities
(3) Determining the target of performance to achieve

The team of the Overaseas Field Experience Program ‘PPL LN’ will accompany the
students while they are preparing the work program.

III. THE IMPLEMENTATION

The Activities and Schedule of the Implementation of the Overaseas Field


Experience Program ‘PPL LN’ will be undertaken using the Integrated and Staged
System.

1. Submission of the students to the partner institution

The students are submitted to the partner institution by Undiksha at the partner
institution.

2. Orientation - Observation

When the Orientation-Observation is made, the things which need to be


undertaken are as follows.

a) Knowing properly the physical and administrative environments of the school


following what is instructed in the Orientation and Observation Sheet of the
Overseas Field Experience Program ‘PPL LN’; enclosed.
b) Knowing the learning process in the classroom by observing the teacher used as
the model following what is instructed in the Observation Sheet of the Learning
Activity during the Overseas Field Experience Program ‘PPL LN’; enclosed.
c) Interviewing the teacher used as the model concerning the learning planning,
learning implementation, and learning assessment; among others, the formulation
of the learning objective, the learning method/strategy, the teaching material
development, the learning media, and the assessment.

3. Guided Teaching Practice

During the guided teaching practice, the things which need to be undertaken by
the students are as follows.

a) Designing the learning plan ‘Rencana Pembelajaran (RPP)’ under the supervision
of the tutor teacher from the partner institution.
b) Learning to teach under the supervision of the tutor teacher from the partner
institution. The evaluation is made and the feedback is given by the tutor teacher
from the partner institution using the assessment rubric prepared by the partner
institution.
c) Making the reflection of the learning process with the tutor teacher from the
partner institution in order to obtain feedback as part of the attempt made to revise
and improve the teaching performance.
d) The learning planning activity – the learning implementation – the learning
reflection are made in the form of cycles.

4. Independent Learning Practice

In this stage the students are provided with the opportunity to independently plan
and implement all their teaching abilities in the real situation under the supervision of the
tutor teacher from the partner institution. The role of the tutor teacher in supervising the
students’ activities is getting less. However, supervising process can still be done based
on the schedule already settled or at any time considered necessary.

5. Monitoring and Evaluation

Monitoring and evaluation during the implementation of the Overseas Field


Experience Program ‘PPL LN’ are made by both the partner institution and Undiksha.
Those activities are separately organized by the partner institution and Undiksha.

6. Withdrawal of the Students Participating in the Overseas Field Experience


Program ‘PPL LN’ by Undiksha

The withdrawal of the students is done by Undiksha at the partner institution at a


farewell event where good impressions and messages are addressed by the
representatives of both Undiksha and the partner institution.

7. Assessment

The assessment will be conducted at Undiksha, which includes the teaching


performance and the report of the result of the Overseas Field Experience Program ‘PPL
LN’.

IV. THE NON-TEACHING ACTIVITIES

While joining the Overseas Field Experience Program ‘PPL LN’, the students will
also join co-curricular, extra-curricular and cross cultural activities prepared by the
partner institution.

V. THE PREPARATION OF THE FINAL REPORT OF THE OVERSEAS FIELD


EXPERIENCE PROGRAM ‘PPL LN’

The final report is prepared while the students are at the partner institution and is
finalized after the program is finished. It is necessary for the students to collect
information and data related to the following things:
a) The physical and administrative environments of the school (location,
infrastructure and facilities, teachers, and the school’s staff)
b) The learning activities (the learning planning obtained from the tutor teacher and
the one made by the students, what is observed, including the pictures of the
learning implementation, supervision and reflection).
c) The co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and the cross cultural experience.
d) The outline of the report should refer to the format attached.
