Abstract

This study aimed to determine the influence of online social networks on the
English Learning of Junior High school students at Batangas State University
ARASOF – Nasugbu. Examined in this research were the different online social
networks, how they influence the English learning of the students and the
advantages and disadvantages of using online social networks. The researchers
employed the descriptive research method and the main data gathering instrument
was questionnaire. Data were tabulated and computed using
frequency/percentage, weighted mean and T-test/ANOVA for significant difference
of the responses. Research showed that the students aged 16 are more exposed
to the use of online social networks and majority of them were females. The most
used online social network of the Junior high school students is YouTube while
Edmodo is in their last option. The students use online social networks for
searching ideas for their assignments and projects and the least was their use of
video calls for the discussion of class related topics. Online social networking sites
have its advantage that it can be useful for team projects in order to create and
maintain connections to many people in many industries that will become an
integral part of developing a career or building business however, its disadvantage
was students can get distracted and start using the social media for their purposes
and not pay attention to the educational content. Moreover, there is no significant
difference in the assessment of the respondents on how social networks influence,
on the advantages of social network, and on the disadvantages of social networks
to their English performance when grouped according to profile variables. This
study, therefore, conclude that Junior high school students are audio-visual
learners, they use online social networks in improving their collaboration with their
classmates and peers, and their age and sex has no connection with their use of
social media.
