Realism- as a style of work focuses on the accuracy of details that
depicts and somehow mirrors reality. There is little room or imagination

in this movement since emphasis is placed in observable traits that can

concretize through artworks. Realism was heavily influenced or

hellenistic Greek culture since most artworks during that period placed

emphasis on the human body.

Example:

1. A burial at Ornans by Jean Desire Gustve Courbet ( 1849-50)

2. The Gleaners three women by Jean Francois Millet.

Abstraction- Abstract means “ to move away or separate.”


Abstract art moves away from showing things as they really are.

-The picture is not just like life. It is not “realistic.”

WASSILY KANDINSKY- first artist to explore pure abstract art.

Constantin Brancusi’s “BIRD IN SPACE”.


–brancusi was impressed by the grace of a bird flight, by the sweep of

its body as it flies through the air,so he represented those qualities in

his sculptural work.

-it convey an impression of a bird’s grace and speed.

Abstract subjects can also be presented in many ways like:

a. Distortion.
-Is a change of a reality’s depiction altering in a way that still recognize

but notice it’s change in some manner.

-Henry moore’s sculptural works and the ancient egyptian paintings

and sculptural works are good example.

b. Elongation.
-is a form that depicts the stretched,lengthened,a protraction or

extension form of people or object in nature.


- El Greco’s elongated body of Jesus Christ “Resurrection”.

c. Mangling.
-This may not be a commonly used way of presenting an abstract

subject, but there are few artists who show subject or objects which are

cut, lacerated, mutilated or hacked with repeated blows.

-abstract form through the use of cone,cylinder or sphere.


-the cubist want to show forms their basic geometrical.

e. Abstract Expressionism.

-originated in New York after World War II.


- the use of large canvases, and deliberate lack of refinement in the

application of the paint. Strong color, heavy impasto, uneven brush

strokes, and rough textures.

Symbolism- The use of symbol to express or represent ideas or


qualities in literature, art science is called Symbolism with its definition

of symbolism with its different types and dimensions.

Fauvism- It was derived from french word “les fauves” which mean
“wild beast”.

-It is an artistic movement which flowered during the 19th century.

- It is focuses on use if extreme bright colours.

- Henry Finesse he is the one who invented the fauvism.

- Fauvism is inspired by Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gaugui artworks.

- Fauvism first shown at the 1905 Salon d’automne (it is an exhibition in

Paris).
Dadaism- Is a protest movement in the arts and it’s formed in 1916
by a group of artist and poets in Zurich, Switzerland. They reacted to

what they believed were traditions in art and the evils they saw in

society.

-Dadaism tried to shock and provoke the people in public by the use of

writing, poetry, and art exhibitions. Dada art was playful and highly

experimental. In French word the name “DADA” means “Hobby Horse”

because it was nonsensical.

-Marcel Duchamp is the French artist and best known Dadaist.
