FOR ALL-IP INFRASTRUCTURES

The broadcast industry today is evolving towards a flexible and UHD-ready all-IP infrastructure,
presenting media companies with the chance to profit from the great new business opportunities
it brings with it. To do so, however, they need to be able to tackle the large number of new
management and orchestration challenges. This solution guide highlights how the DataMiner
platform monitors, orchestrates and performs ser vice assurance in complex all-IP, SDI and
virtualized broadcast operations.

ALL-IP IS NOT ABOUT REPLACING CABLES

With the ongoing migration in the broadcast industry towards an all-IP infrastructure, media companies are facing tremendous new
challenges. The move to all-IP is not just another shift in technology like the migration from SD to HD. This time, it is not about replacing
boxes by software appliances and substituting SDI with ethernet cables. On the contrary: the transition to media over IP enables companies
to leverage new technologies, redefine operational practices and explore new business models that were out of reach before.

COTS hardware that supports multi-format media can be implemented and both the network and the applications can be virtualized.
The logical next step is to deploy those media solutions in the private or public cloud. But the faster technology evolves, the more
flexible media companies will have to act and adapt their operational procedures. The transition to all-IP and virtualized infrastructures
needs to be managed with care. End-to-end visibility of your operational environment and the possibility to orchestrate resources
and services dynamically are key to make such a transition successful.

CHALLENGE 1

MEDIA OVER IP IS NOT SDI … YET

The essential requirements the broadcast industry has towards an IP network are significantly different from other industries and to
what the IT industry is typically used to. The fact that very high bit rate linear media flows have to run smoothly in a network that has
a non-linear nature leads to a situation in which those network technologies, control planes and flow topologies do not always behave as
they should. Uncompressed media flows require special attention:

Obviously, they need to transmit in real time; IP traffic shaping is issues: latency, packet delay variations (PDV) or jitter, packets
vital to optimize and guarantee network performance. Switching that are forwarded in a different order and, in a worst-case

IP routers and switches buffer packets by nature and forward those DataMiner to monitor flow quality and orchestrate the optimal
in case of sufficient bandwidth. As such, they introduce some workflow for each service.

MEDIA WORKFLOW ORCHESTRATION:

A REALITY CHECK
The complexity of switching signals is significantly higher in all-IP than in SDI-based installations. In the past, a broadcast controller
had to talk to one or more SDI routers whereas in an all-IP deployment, those broadcast controllers need to interface with the
network switches and, in most cases, with all edge devices as well. On top of that, the switch manufacturers offer their own SDN
controllers, which adds another layer of complexity that did not exist in the SDI world.

THE ALL-IP PROBLEMS TODAY

• many tools from different vendors are required
• no agility defining and setting up new workflows
• slowness in operation
• inflexible and rather static operational workflows
• vendor lock-in, controllers are tied to specific technology
• traditional broadcast workflows get broken
• siloed operation, controllers cannot be stacked

With the problems mentioned above, all good reasons for

migrating to an all-IP infrastructure fade away. The expected
flexibility, agility and scalability will not materialize when the
IP infrastructure is segmented as a result of siloed monitoring,
management and orchestration.

TIME FOR A FRESH NEW LOOK

Successfully making the move from SDI to IP requires much
more than merely replacing your SDI router with an IP switch.
Let's take a look at what's necessary to make your all-IP story a
success.

Once new infrastructure has been discovered, configured and placed in operation, DataMiner constantly monitors and controls your entire
infrastructure in real time, both on-premises and off-premises, end to end, without any boundaries or technology restrictions. DataMiner
merges your traditional broadcast and most recent broadcast equipment (multi-viewers, monitors, cameras, audio/video processing,
graphics devices) with your IT infrastructure (network infrastructure, storage nodes, OS, virtual machines, microservices) into a single
consolidated platform. More than ever, there is a need to have permanent insight into the availability, capacity and capabilities of each
resource.

DATAMINER FLOW MONITORING

It is not only about monitoring and managing hardware, software and the network itself, but crucially also about getting a detailed view on
all active video, audio and metadata streams. Label information from a broadcast controller, combined with crosspoint status info from an
optional third-party SDN orchestrator and flow details from IP edge devices, xFlow collectors that also extract flow topologies in real time
by aggregating data from sources, endpoints and all all-IP switches must be directly combined into a single user interface to allow operators
to view and analyze uncompressed video, audio and metadata flows and all their IP counters in real time. DataMiner even proactively
detects issues and warns operators in the event of a service degradation or outages. Not only does the platform keep an eye on the main
feeds, the redundant feeds (SMPTE ST 2022-7) will also be constantly monitored.

NETWORK MONITORING AND CONTROL

Your network is the new heart of any all-IP infrastructure. DataMiner constantly monitors your switches and routers from any vendor, down
to the most detailed metrics. Discover how network topology changes automatically, check your network utilization in real time,
get in-depth views on IP counters, packet errors and packet drops, read optical TX and RX power from every single SFP and set secure
VLANs and ACLs dynamically. DataMiner guarantees to get the best performance out of your dynamic network.

DATAMINER APPLICATION AND SERVICE VERIFICATION (ASV)

DataMiner ASV complements the suite of tools to proactively test and verify a production media center. Execute dry-run tests on any kind
of media-over-IP equipment and media services before they are put into production. Automated scheduled and round-robin tests (to send
multicast streams to analyzers and probes, for example) can be perfectly used once a service is in operation to guarantee valid media flows.

PTP MONITORING AND CONTROL

Replacing black burst, PTP is the new de facto standard for all-IP installations. With its many possibilities to set up your PTP infrastructure,
from transparent clock to boundary clock, distributed grandmasters and a variety of different setups for PTP failover, it is essential
to constantly monitor your PTP products, including every parameter of the PTP configuration of each PTP-capable device. DataMiner
detects and corrects misconfigurations automatically; it manages and orchestrates your multi-vendor PTP environment, from the grandmasters
down to every PTP slave device and visualizes the connections between PTP slaves and main/backup master clocks in real time.

DATAMINER ADVANCED ANALYTICS (DAA)

DataMiner takes proactiveness to another level; it forecasts trends automatically (on network utilization or CPU usage, for example) and
actually warns the operator before an issue arises and affects your operation. Using machine-learning algorithms, it applies advanced
unsupervised learning in order to intelligently detect faults and incidents. With its built-in artificial intelligence, it analyzes data on the fly
and continuously learns from that. As such, it continuously assists operators to the maximum extent by covering all your operational data.

SDN CONTROL:
END-TO-END SERVICE ORCHESTRATION
With the mix of controllers and interconnections, each with different responsibilities across many new layers, it is clear that an
overarching platform like DataMiner does more than just fill in the gaps. It acts as an instance that truly orchestrates a media
facility end to end, at the same time smoothly integrating any third-party SDN controller, often optimized for live production, even
within large-scale blocking networks.

DataMiner orchestration makes sure flows are managed thoughtfully to make them available when and where required. At the same
time, it guarantees that none of the links in the media network get oversubscribed at any moment in time, in order to not disturb one,
many or any of the other video and audio flows.

Furthermore, true orchestration is not only about switching signals. DataMiner interacts with your operations and business management
layer as well, such as ticketing, billing, scheduling or planned maintenance systems.

DATAMINER
DataMiner stands out from all other systems on the market with the introduction of the new DATAMINER SERVICE AND RESOURCE
MANAGEMENT SUITE (SRM). This suite of applications is the most advanced in its kind, providing unmatched visibility, service
orchestration, and workflow automation across legacy hardware, appliances and virtualized functions (NFV). The SRM suite is a blend
of seven core DataMiner applications, all joined together in one platform. SRM does not stand on its own; it integrates smoothly
with existing broadcast and SDN controllers. DataMiner supports all existing broadcast protocols from any vendor, but also emerging
standards such as the proposed AMWA Networked Media Open Specifications NMOS IS-04, NMOS IS-05 and NMOS -IS06.

ORCHESTRATION

CONTROL
True orchestration is significantly different from the way a typical SDN controller is conceived. Both have their pros and cons and need
to be combined in the best way possible for your operations, including your live production all-IP infrastructure, even if the latter is blocking.
Typical SDN controllers only support a subset of the building blocks you need for true end-to-end service orchestration. They are mostly
designed for fast and quasi frame-accurate switching of audio and video streams and they operate in real time. Fast execution of switch
commands, however, conflicts with the principles of orchestration, i.e. the need to check, book and guarantee resource availability and link
capacity before the switch command can happen.
