The broadcast industry today is evolving towards a flexible and UHD-ready all-IP infrastructure,
presenting media companies with the chance to profit from the great new business opportunities
it brings with it. To do so, however, they need to be able to tackle the large number of new
management and orchestration challenges. This solution guide highlights how the DataMiner
platform monitors, orchestrates and performs ser vice assurance in complex all-IP, SDI and
virtualized broadcast operations.

COTS hardware that supports multi-format media can be implemented and both the network and the applications can be virtualized.
The logical next step is to deploy those media solutions in the private or public cloud. But the faster technology evolves, the more
flexible media companies will have to act and adapt their operational procedures. The transition to all-IP and virtualized infrastructures
needs to be managed with care. End-to-end visibility of your operational environment and the possibility to orchestrate resources
and services dynamically are key to make such a transition successful.

SDN CONTROL:
END-TO-END SERVICE ORCHESTRATION
With the mix of controllers and interconnections, each with different responsibilities across many new layers, it is clear that an
overarching platform like DataMiner does more than just fill in the gaps. It acts as an instance that truly orchestrates a media
facility end to end, at the same time smoothly integrating any third-party SDN controller, often optimized for live production, even
within large-scale blocking networks.
DataMiner orchestration makes sure flows are managed thoughtfully to make them available when and where required. At the same
time, it guarantees that none of the links in the media network get oversubscribed at any moment in time, in order to not disturb one,
many or any of the other video and audio flows.
Furthermore, true orchestration is not only about switching signals. DataMiner interacts with your operations and business management
layer as well, such as ticketing, billing, scheduling or planned maintenance systems.

ORCHESTRATION
VERSUS
CONTROL
True orchestration is significantly different from the way a typical SDN controller is conceived. Both have their pros and cons and need
to be combined in the best way possible for your operations, including your live production all-IP infrastructure, even if the latter is blocking.
Typical SDN controllers only support a subset of the building blocks you need for true end-to-end service orchestration. They are mostly
designed for fast and quasi frame-accurate switching of audio and video streams and they operate in real time. Fast execution of switch
commands, however, conflicts with the principles of orchestration, i.e. the need to check, book and guarantee resource availability and link
capacity before the switch command can happen.
