THE TRUMPET CALL 1

Our Mission: To love Jesus Christ and to share His Love

Our Vision: To be a Christian community where Christ is transforming lives
East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church Volume V Issue 26 June 30th, 2019

Last Sunday, you may have seen the two photos on the tables in Fellowship Hall, celebrating 68
years of marriage between Irma Lou and Warren Saunders. One showed them on their wedding
day and the other was a photo of the two of them taken just a few years ago (pictured here).
Several people whispered in my ear: “Who are they? I don’t know them.” They are the parents of
Dave Saunders and in-laws of Cathy Saunders. Irma Lou and Warren moved recently from their
home in New Jersey to Gluco Lodge on Kemmertown Rd. and have been attending our 10:45
worship service on a regular basis.
Irma Lou remarked to me last Sunday that she loves to write devotionals, and this past week, Cathy dropped off
two of them to my office. I was immediately taken by the first one, because the scripture it’s based on, Matthew 7:1,
is a part of the message this coming Sunday morning. As I like to say, this is not a coincidence but a “God-
incidence.” The devotional is beautiful, but unfortunately too long to quote the whole of it here. The scripture is this,
taken from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount: “Do not judge or you, too, will be judged. For in the same way you judge
others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Irma Lou tells about a time when she and Warren had just acquired a new digital device and were feeling
overwhelmed by technology. A young man at the store where they had made the purchase, Robbie, heard their
concerns and offered to come to their home on his day off and try to rectify problems with their router and wifi. They
had heard stories of the elderly being taken advantage of by those who offered help, and were wary, especially
since Robbie had long hair, a beard, and tattoos. According to Irma Lou, “after saying a quick prayer we decided
that regardless of his ‘outward appearance,’ we would accept his offer.” He showed up with a young woman whom
Irma Lou decided must be his live-in girlfriend. Wrong! Annie was Robbie’s wife who worked for a large tech
company and who also had the day off.
After helping them with their technology challenges, Robbie and Annie sat down and broke bread with Irma Lou
and Warren at lunch. Irma Lou and Warren shared their faith in Jesus Christ and had a
wonderful time getting to know this young couple. Said Irma Lou about the experience:
“God had planned this surprise divine encounter especially for me! He wanted it to be a
learning experience and a rebuke for me! He made me realize that I was too quick to
judge as many of us often do. We might think that we are so perfect when we are not.
We tend to look at the ‘outward appearance’ of another person who might look or be
different from what we expect or approve of. I had focused on Robbie’s long hair, beard,
and tattoos instead of the real person he was…Scripture tells us in 1 Samuel 16:7: ‘Man
looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart.’”
Thank you, Irma Lou, for that EXCELLENT reminder for all who follow Christ! The entire
devotional, entitled “The Outward Appearance,” is available on the Welcome Table in
Oberholtzer if you’d like to pick up a copy.
I’d also like to thank members of the SWAT Team for their recent work repainting exterior doors of our church! As
we have made a decision to not hire a new paid facilities manager, utilizing our humble servant volunteers goes a
long way to keeping our facilities in good shape. The SWAT Team normally meets on the fourth Monday, and are
led by Bruce Johnson. Please see, call, or email Bruce if you’d like to help next month; they’re always looking for
new volunteers!
A final word: next week is a holiday week, with July 4 falling on a Thursday. Because of staff vacations, there will
be NO Trumpet Call next week, though you will still see our 1 eNews and the July 7 bulletin will feature our monthly
insert featuring all our upcoming major events.
Blessings in Christ, Pastor Jim
