This study aims to evaluate the impacts of family influence and involvement on

career decisions of Accountancy, Business, and Management students.

Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the influences of family involvement in the career decisions of ABM

students?

2. What are the advantages of having family influence and involvement in the

career decisions of ABM students?

3. What are the disadvantages of having family influence and involvement in the

career decisions of ABM students?

iii

4. What are the impacts of having family influence and involvement in the career

decisions of ABM students?

This study strictly focuses on the impact of family influence and involvement in the

career decisions of ABM students subjected to its advantages and disadvantages.

This study involves Grade 11 students under ABM strand in GMATHS particularly

those who have family influence and involvement in their career decisions as an ABM

student.

The time reference of the study is school year 2017-2018.

This study made use of the phenomenological type of research. The discipline of

phenomenology may be defined initially as the study of structures of experience, or

consciousness. Literally, phenomenology is the study of “phenomena”, appearances of

things, or things as they appear in our experience, or the way we experience things.

Phenomenology is mainly done when a researcher attempts to extract the most pure,

untainted data and some interpretations from the experiences. It is qualitative and uses

questionnaires to collect data. In this study, phenomenology focused on assessing the

impacts of family influence and involvement in the career decisions of students as assessed

by the Grade 11 ABM students of General Mariano Alvarez Technical High School.

The respondents of this study are Grade 11 students under the ABM strand in

General Mariano Alvarez Technical High School during the school year 2017-2018.
iv

Based on the data gathered from the respondents, the following are the findings of

the specific problems that were raised on the study.

1. Career-decision making of ABM students is greatly influenced by their family.

Some of the students chose ABM strand because at a young age, they are inclined in the

business field because they own a business. On the other hand, some of the respondents

chose ABM strand because of the satisfaction and the ability of the job to provide a better

life. Others also say that the current state of the family results in the eagerness of the child

to choose a high demand career. Parents, in their time, fail to achieve their dreams, they

force their kids to pursue their parents dreams. On the contrary, family support has

significant contribution in the development of an individual.

2. Family influence and involvement is advantageous to some ABM students as it

gives them motivation, students feel motivated when the whole family is giving him/her

support. ABM students feel comfortable when their family allows them to spend their time

in the career that is of their interests. Also, it results in higher self-esteem as they feel

confident in the track they have chosen.

3. Family influence and involvement also gives disadvantages as it makes the

student feel pressure not to commit mistakes. It also makes the child unable to think of

his/her future. There is also a situation when the parent pushes their children down the

career paths of their own choice.

v

4. Impacts of family influence and involvement tend to have two distinctions, the

positive and negative. The positive impacts of family influence and involvement tend to

have direct relationship with the students’ education and well- being. Some of the

respondents show excellence on the strand they have chosen because they feel confident by

the support provided by the family. The negative impacts of family influence and

involvement can be seen on the well-being of an individual. It will create confusion, lower

self-esteem, and lack of confidence.

Conclusions

Based on the findings revealed in the study, the following conclusions were

formulated.

1. Family influence and involvement plays a vital role in the career decisions of

ABM students. It is the strongest influence that can affect the career-decision making of an

individual. It shapes the thinking of the student to choose a particular strand. The findings

lead us to conclude that most of the ABM students choose ABM strand because of the

influence and involvement of the family,

2. Family influence and involvement provides advantages to ABM students. It

helps them to feel motivated, confident, and comfortable on the career they have chosen.

3. On the contrary, family influence and involvement to an individual gives

disadvantages. There are a lot of disadvantages, but some of them are, pressure and family

seems controlling the future of the child.

vi

4. Family influence and involvement in one’s career-decision making creates

impact. Positive impacts of family influence and involvement will be mold if the students

perceive it positively. The impacts can be seen through different aspects, particularly, in

school and his/her well-being. On the other hand, negative impacts will be mold if the

students perceive it negatively. The impacts can be seen through the well-being of an

individual.

Recommendations

It has been established that family influence and involvement has an impact in the

career decision-making of ABM students in General Mariano Alvarez Technical High

School. In the light of the findings and conclusions, the following are strongly

recommended.

1. Students may be given guidance to align their career on the strand they have

chosen.

2. Students should undergo a lot of career exploration to choose a career that best

suits them.

3. Parents should realize that their values and expectations influence the career

choice to a great extent. In this respect, it is recommended that parents should deliberately

communicate their expectation without being overly persuasive.

vii

4. After the initial career decisions have been made, career counselors may

continue to encourage successful career development by identifying psychosocial support

available to students.

5. Teachers and career counselors should realize that high level parental education

influences student’s career choice and should therefore pass the importance of higher

education to the students in relation to their careers.

6. Future researchers may use this to conduct studies that promotes and highlight

the importance of family influence and involvement on one’s career. On the other hand,

future researchers may enhance this research by providing additional information.
