Streetscaping of Mandir Marg Road in New Delhi

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Streetscaping generally refers to urban roadways design and conditions as they impact street

users and nearby residents. Streetscaping programme are an important component of efforts to

redevelop urban areas and can being changes into the road sections, traffic management

system, sidewalk conditions, landscaping, street furniture, building fronts, improving signages

etc.

RATIONALE OF THE STREETSCAPING

As per the contractual agreement of Delhi government with organizing committee of Common

Wealth Games – 2010, all roads with in 2 Km of games venue were to be Streetscaped by the

road owing agency. The main objectives behind Streetscaping of various roads was to provide

necessary facilities to both vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement for effective traffic

management on one hand & improve aesthetic look of the road on the other hand as a whole. The

roads were prepared up to the required international standard. It is envisaged that streetscaping

will make the visitors comfortable & happy while traveling on the Mandir Marg road.

METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY

The Mandir marg which had three main sections of length as follows namely From Talkatora

Roundabout to Kali Bari Road is 590 m, From Talkatora Roundabout to Kali Bari Road is 590 m & From Kali

Bari Road to Peshwa Road: 520 m.

 Barricading was erected at all the working location on both sides of road.

 The existing parking area was shifted to other location at the time of execution.

 The good coordination was made to other department like electrical & horticulture.

 The trenches were excavated across the road at regular intervals for the identification of

existing utilities and then shifted/ diverted existing utilities for the proper functioning of

utilities.

 The whole work was carried out as per CPWD specification.

 It was proposed to make service duct in continuous lengths shall be provided on the

Mandir Marg in the footpath passage along the wall with duct chamber at each entry of

the building/crossing.

 It was proposed to make cycle track on one side in continuous lengths shall be provided

on the Mandir Marg along the footpath passage.

 It was proposed to provide granite & vitrified tiles will be provided on the footpath

passage.

EXPECTED CONTRIBUTION

 To protect the important heritage and streetscape characteristics of the established

residential areas.

 To ensure a high level of amenity for residents, including adequate open space, privacy,

sunlight and daylight, parking and transport options.

 To achieve a constant residential population level by compensating for losses caused by

falling household sizes with population growth.

PLACES/LABS/EQUIPMENTS AND TOOLS REQUIRED

The following equipments/tools/labs were required for completion the project:


The testing laboratory include the cube testing machine, Sieve analysis equipment,

Aggregate Impact testing machine, & Silt testing jar.

The tools used were Concrete mixer, Excavator, Chain pulley, Boring machine for borewell

& other many small tools etc.

PROBLEMS ENVISAGED IN CARRYING OUT THE PROJECT

Problems envisaged in carrying out the project are as follows :

 The shortage of skilled labour due to large scale construction activities were carried out in Delhi

during preparation of CWG-2010.

 There are two main old temple i.e. Laxmi Narayan Mandir( Birla Mandir ), Kali bari Mandir on the

road. At the time of execution there was big problem of movement of pilgrims on the temple.

 The work was executed in a continuous business activities as well as vehicular movements.

 Delayed in project execution due to heavy monsoon came in Delhi during construction of road.
