OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The Mandir Marg road is a heritage road with buildings on both sides of the road. There

are heritage buildings such as Laxmi Narayan mandir, Buddhist temple, Kali bari Mandir, Hindu

Mahasabha, Arya Samaj Mandir, St. Thomas church and Balmiki Mandir. The Mandir marg road

connected the Talkatora stadium roundabout to the Panchkuia road. In the common Wealth

Games-2010, 1.86 km this road has been beautified and made upto the international standards.

During the CWG-2010, foreigners and visitors have been reached heritage places and they

praised our art, heritage building and road.

The Mandir marg road occupy the 5 no. of schools, 6 no of kiosks, CPWD Govt. Quarters such

as Sector D type III, 750 type I quarters, Gandhi Sadan quarters, Balmiki Sadan Quarters,

Mandir marg Police Station, South club of India and three service centers of NDMC such as

Building Maintenance, Drainage & Sewerage.

The existing road pavement was of RCC tiles and some area was paved with red sand stone.

The condition of footpath has been become very bad due to missing/broken of RCC tiles and

red sand stone. The height of central verge stone has been become less due to again & again

carpeting on the road time to time. Further this road had undeveloped green areas, old electric

poles and improper parking space.

So to beautify the road, following provisions are taken as per the streetscaping :-

1. Pedestrian Surface

2. Horticulture work

3. Electrical work

4. Replacement of Old signages

5. Traffic management

6. Public conviencies

METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY

The streescaping was not a single task it have many aspects or field works like civil works, electrical

works & horticulture work, water supply sewerage system drainage system. So there were many

agencies who have to have coordination in order to complete the work in time. An

architect/consultant was employed to survey the area and make proper use of the street space

available. There were mainly three important phases to complete the work :-

1. Preconstruction phase

It was first phase. First of all appointed the architect/consultant and received the conceptual

plan of work. The plan was approved by the competent authority. The Preliminary estimate

was prepared and submitted to accord the A/A & E/S. After this the detail estimate was

prepared and took the technical sanction by the competent authority. At last the NIT was

prepared and finally approved the tender.

2. Execution/construction phase

It was second stage; award the work to the agency. Execute the work as per relative term and

condition of contract and as per CPWD specification. Various inspections and testing of

materials were done.

3. Post construction phase

After completion of work, maintenance was done by the department.

 It was proposed to make service duct in continuous lengths should be provided on

the Mandir Marg under the footpath passage along the wall with duct chamber at

each entry of the building/crossing.

 It was proposed to make cycle track on one side in continuous lengths should be

-3-
provided on the Mandir Marg along the footpath passage.

 It was proposed to provide granite & vitrified tiles should be provided on the

footpath passage.

 It was proposed to make seaters/benches below the trees on footpath and in front

of mandir plazas.

The mandir marg had three main sections of length as follows:

A) From Talkatora Roundabout to Kali Bari Road: 590 m

B) From Kali Bari Road to Peshwa Road: 520 m

C) From Peshwa Road to Panchkuia Road: 750 m

Firstly, The work was carried out in section A and later on section B and at last in section C. The

various activities which were carried out as under :-

1. The labour hutments and stores for different materials were constructed.

2. The M.S. barricading to separation of work from the public/traffic movement were

constructed.

3. The existing footpath was dismantled.

4. The cross-pits along the width of footpath to know about the different services were

excavated.

5. The services lines were shifted if required as per site condition.

6. Excavation was done and laid the two no. RCC pipe 250 mm diameter parallel as service

duct and construct the manhole at each entry of building. The distance between two manholes

should not more than 30 metre.

7. The existing old kerb stone was dismantled and fixed the new kerb line if required as per

drawing.

8. The G.I. pipe line of 50 mm internal diameter was laid on both side of road with water hydrant

at suitable interval to irrigation the plants/trees.

-4-
9. The bore hole was drilled for 150 mm diameter M.S. blind pipe & slotted pipe to fill up the

reservoir.

10. The underground reservoir was constructed with RCC work 1:1.5:3 & one horizontal motor

was placed to supply the water in irrigation pipe line.

11. The surface was compacted with small road roller where earth was filled and lean concrete

of 1:4:8 was laid and paved the vitrified tile of size 300X300 mm & 100X100 mm, Granite tile

300X150 mm and granite slab as per the given pattern in the drawing.

12. The Seaters/Benches were constructed in front of Kali bari mandir & Birla Mandir Plaza to

facilitate the visitor to take rest.

13. The old signage’s board was removed & replaced with new stainless steel signage’s board.

14. The new street light pole of 4 metre height & 8 metre height was fixed with suitable space

interval.

15. The bollards were fixed on footpath portion at each entry to avoid the vehicular movement

on footpath.

16. The M.S. railings were fixed in front of Birla Mandir plaza in central verge.

17. The work was completed with testing of material & work done as per CPWD specification.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Problems envisaged in carrying out the project were as follows:-

1) Scarcity of Availability of skilled labour :- In Whole Delhi during period 2009-10

the construction work was going speedy manner & so frequently the shortage of

labour was occurred.

2) Heavy Rainfall: - During the work, due to heavy monsoon about 3 month the

project was delayed badly.

3) Crowded area: - There are seven religious places and five no of schools Mandir

marg road. So the work was carried out small portion by portion.

4) Shifting of services: - Drainage lines, water lines, sewer lines, unfiltered water

lines & Gas lines were shifted during work. Delayed due to improper co-ordination

between various agencies in execution of the work of shifting.

5) Shifting of existing kiosks/shops at proper place.

6) Theft of material/accessories from site.

(a) ANALYSIS

I have got the questionnaire filled from the residential people, from which I found that over all

planning of work, quality & various facilities i.e. seater/Benches, planter, cycle track, parking &

footpath is appreciated by the people from the surrounding area and visitors comes on the

heritage places on this road. Most of people/visitors said that this type of work should be carried

out on other roads in New Delhi.

(b) SOLUTION

1) The target was achieved by incentive and given the overtime to the labour/worker due to

shortage of labour in New Delhi.

2) In the rainfall the work was carried out on that portion which was shaded i.e. inside shop,

subway etc.

3) By proper barricading the work area to avoid the mishappening to the people.

4) Ensured that the all the services should not be damaged during shifting.

5) Ensured that the business of kiosk/shopkeeper should not be affected due to shifting.

6) By proper watch & ward theft was minimized.

FINAL RESULTS
It was the first time in New Delhi when such kind of Streetscaping works was executed on

Mandir Marg. The work was completed before the CWG Game 2010 and gave much neat &

clean look to the visitors.

Streetscape of road facilitates the following benefits:-

1) To protect the important heritage and streetscape characteristics of the established

residential areas.

2) To ensure a high level of amenity for residents, including adequate open space, privacy,

sunlight, parking and transport options.

3) To encourage design excellence for all residential development, with an emphasis on

preserving and enhancing the built and natural environment of New Delhi.

4) To provide beautification the road in a well planned manner good facility to pedestrian

movement.

5) To provide separate cycle track for cyclist & provide separate footpath & green buffer for

planter.

CHAPTER-VII

CONCLUSIONS

The successful design and construction of a streetscape project is a rewarding experience

for the community in which it is built, as well as for the entire city of New Delhi.

Streetscapes help to define neighborhood character and enhance the urban fabric of the

City. The ideas and standards presented throughout this guide are intended to help ensure

this success. Whatever the changes might be, the overall goal will remain the same to

make the New Delhi a better place in which to live & work.

Streetscaping of road increase the beauty and aesthetic look of the road. It provides

various facilities in the work which are used by people /visitors. The green area was increased

on both side of road gave pleasant look & provide defense against the “Urban heat island effect”

and protect residents from harsh weather conditions. The provision of service duct help in laying

electrical cable, telecommunication cable avoid unnecessary cutting of footpath/road. The

provision of cycle track isolates the cyclist from the main road and it reduces the chances of

accidents. The number of light poles increased visibility which helps in night hours. The parking

area provision near Mandir & schools avoid the unnecessary traffic conjunction due to standing

of vehicle on main road.

It is expected that streetscaoing of Mandir Marg Road will set a example for planning, execution

and completion of such projects in future make the Country capital a Green City.

CHAPTER-VIII

SCOPE OF FUTURE STUDY

Keeping future demands in mind, the streetscape will have further scope for

expansion in other part of the New Delhi area.

It is expected that other departments of Government of Delhi such as M.C.D, PWD,

& C.P.W.D. in Delhi would make sincere efforts to take up such projects on atleast

major/important roads under their jurisdiction so that the Capital City becomes a World

Class City.
