Abstract:

Chemical stabilization has been used for the improvement of soft clay soils
in order to enhance the shear strength and limiting deformation behavior.
Cement is widely used as a stabilizing material for soils, but the increasing
price is causing economic concerns among practitioners. In this project two
types of materials were used as soil stabilizer such cement and lime. Cement
was used in 3%, 5%, 7% and 10%. Lime also used as stabilizer in four
percent representing 3 %, 5%, 7% and 10% .Lime and cement also used as
stabilizer in for percent representing 3% , 5%, 7%, and 10% half to half. The
clay specimens were taken from Bladaroz East –North of Iraq.

The experiments were carried out in University of Technology /soil

mechanics Lab. The physical properties were measured by conducting
standard laboratory test such as Atterberg limits (L.L., P.L.) and specific
gravity. A standard compaction on natural and improved soils also were
carried out, the maximum dry density and optimum moisture content were
measured for different % of lime and cement content. The results reveled
that as the cement content increases, the maximum dry density increases too.
The results reveled that as the lime content increases, the maximum dry
density decreases. Unconfined compressive strength test natural and improved
soil the strength increase when lime and cement content increase also increase
strength with curing (3,7,14,28)days.
