We joined KARTAVYA FOUNDATION, Mumbai, as a part of our university project under
YUVA FOR SEVA event. The project was for 13 days. I started on 28 th January 2019 and
worked till 9th February 2019 on community driven activities for welfare of society.
Kartavya Foundation was started 5 years ago with whole set of 81 aims and objectives for
welfare of the society including Education, Empowerment, Blind welfare, Awareness
campaigns, Donation drives etc. During this project we came across various activities with
the help of Kartavya foundation and they also guided us throughout our project completion
regarding various activities to be held at various locations and with different objectives of
social welfare.
Some of the activities conducted during those days were education assistance to student with
financial crises, recycle, and reuse by collecting house hold scrap and selling it to raise funds
for mission: SHIKSHA, Teaching at orphanage (with 90 kids), stationary distribution,
volunteering and conducting activities.
We learned a lot during the project, faced certain challenges during certain activities. We
learned to work with people coming from different background having different experiences.
I being the coordinator of the NGO learnt to manage a team.
KARTAVYA FOUNDATION had created success stories during our project. We experienced
a power of youth and changes that took places. During our project, being management

2.3 Global Goals
Following are the goals under that were achieved under UN Global Goals for Sustainable
Development:

Goal 4: Quality education

A quality education is the foundation of sustainable development, and therefore of the
Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development targets for 2030 call for
ensuring the completion of primary and secondary education by all boys and girls, and
guaranteeing equal access to opportunities for access to quality technical and vocational
education for everyone.
At Kartavya foundation we have undertaken an initiative: mission –SHIKSHA. The purpose of
this mission is to support the education of needy and deserving children by paying off their
annual fees. To achieve this mission a fund raising activity was conducted. These funds were
collected by collecting and selling the household scrap like newspapers, books and other iron
and metal junk.
Goal 12: Responsible consumption & production
Sustainable consumption and production aims at ‘doing more and better with less,’ increasing
net welfare gains from economic activities by reducing resource use, degradation, and pollution,
while increasing the quality of life. Sustainable development will be achieved not only by
growing our economies, but minimizing waste in the process of doing so.
In our day-to-day life we use various resources like newspapers, books, magazines, tins, cans,
glass bottles, metal scrap etc. Once used, we either throw such materials or just dump it
somewhere in the house. These resources if dumped or recycled properly can have various
alternatives. These alternatives can be of great benefit and can help us to make efficient use of
resources and keep our environment clean.
At Kartavya foundation, in order to achieve mission- SHIKSHA an activity was undertaken for
raising funds. Under this activity we all volunteers went door to door asking people to give their
household scrap. Abundant amount of scrap was collected which was later sold to scrap dealers.
These scrap dealers collect/receive scrap from various places and then segregate and sell these
items at appropriate places where they can be recycled and reused. For example: the metal scrap
can be reused to make new products. Recycling such scrap can reduce the generation of waste
while also preventing the need for additional mining.
Thus by undertaking this activity we achieved the goal of ‘Responsible consumption &
production’ wherein around 1000 kgs of scrap was collected and sold which could now be
recycled and reused appropriately and contribute to saving our environment and give us some
economic benefit.

3.2 Details of Each project with Photos
 Mission Shiksha:
At Kartavya foundation, the first event that we conducted was mission: SHIKSHA. The purpose
of this event was to support the education of needy and deserving children by paying off their
annual fees. In order to support this cause a fund raising activity was undertaken. Under this
activity, we had to collect household scrap like old books, newspapers, iron, glass and metal
junk etc. It was a 12 days activity wherein each and every member was assigned a target of
collecting 100 kgs of scrap.
I started this activity by making a small flyer and a message describing the event. This flyer
along with the message was shared on various social media platform. I approached to all my
friends, relatives, all the members of my society and explained them about this event. I also
visited a yoga center, a medical shop and explained them about this event. Initial few days were
spent in creating awareness about this activity. After few days’ contribution started flowing in.
Huge quantity of scrap was received from some places while from some other places scrap was
received in small quantities. I collected some amount of scrap from my home also. I also
received some contribution in the form of money.
At the end of this activity I collected 90 kg of scrap and Rs.1000 as money contribution. Later
this scrap was sold to a scrap dealer
It was a successful 12 days event in which there were great efforts taken by each and every
member and many of them even crossed their targets. A total quantity of kgs scrap was
collected along with some monetary contribution. This money will now be used to support the
education of few underprivileged children.

 Mission Teaching and stationary distribution:
The second event that we conducted was teaching and stationary at an orphanage named
‘Nirmala Devi ashram’ in Badlapur. The purpose of this event to spread joy and happiness
amongst the children by teaching in joyous manner with them. We did some games and
stationary distribution as well. It was a four days activity out of which one day was spent in
planning about the event and second day was the day of the event. There were 90 kids in all for
whom we had to plan the event.
On the first day i.e. 28th January 2019 we did the planning for the entire event. Firstly, we
decided upon the contribution for the event. Every one of us voluntarily contributed some
amount of money. After deciding upon the final contribution, we began to plan for the further
activities. We planned to take some food items, a cake and soft drinks. Secondly, the planning for
the gifts was done. We bought stationary sets consisting of a pencil, a scale, a sharpener and an
eraser for each child. Next, we bought 2-3 sets of few games like rackets and shuttle, chess and
Ludo.
The second day i.e. 29th January 2019 was the day of the actual event. We reached the location
and all the children were sitting in a hall. We got a very great welcome by all the children. We
interacted with all the children and then the songs were played. We all danced along with all the
children. After the dance we played games like passing the pass and musical chair. After some
time cake cutting was done and we served the cake, food and soft drinks to the children. We
ended the event by distributing the games and the stationary and by clicking many pictures.
It was a successful event where we not only shared some joy and happiness but also had a very
great learning and experience. We learnt to plan and organize an event. The children at the NGO
were much disciplined and enthusiastic. They thought us to be always happy and keep smiling in
all the situations in our life.

3.3 Impact of the project on the NGO

 Through the fundraising activity during mission: SHIKSHA, we were able to create more
awareness about the NGO.
 We got leads for the NGO wherein many people enquired more about the NGO so that they
could contribute or participate in further activities of the NGO.
 The NGO was able to achieve its monthly goal by conducting 3 events in these 13 days.
 Usually the NGO manages to perform one or two events in a month. But in these 13 days
we managed to successfully complete 3 events namely: mission – SHIKSHA, teaching and
stationary distribution.

4. CHALLENGES FACED BY THE STUDENTS WORKING AT
THE NGO

4.1 Challenges faced:

 Collecting and selling 100kgs of scrap and collect Rs. 1000 at the end of 2 weeks.
 Some people were not willing to give scrap to NGO.
 Some people were not having scrap.
 Making people understand that the money was genuinely going to help with 2 kids
education.

4.2 How challenges were overcome:

 Making people understand the purpose of the project.

 Convincing them that the money collected would be used for the 2 student’s education.
 People who didn’t have scrap were asked whether they could help with monetary donation.

17
5. SUGGESTIONS AND LIMITATIONS

 It was one of a great experience where I got to contribute towards society, I feel
this type of work should be done in both the years of PGDM.
 Some people felt it was a way of collecting money and was not related to NGO,
so a hardcopy of NGO’s information, purpose should be printed or given as a part
of proof, also appreciation to the people who contributed to it could be done.

18
6. LEARNING / EXPERIENCE

 I learned to communicate and negotiate with people.

 The kids were so happy and enthusiastic about us visiting them and spending time with
them also participating in drawing.
 I felt more responsible citizen and that I have more responsibility towards Society.
 It was one of a kind experience. I haven’t had worked with an NGO ever before, so it was
a great experience and I would love to do more such work.
 I had an immense self-satisfaction that I got to work for such a noble cause.
