THE PFWC ART THERAPY MASTERPLAN

-prepared by Carlo G. Soldevilla (for
submission to Dr. Victor Baron)
INTRODUCTION:
A semi-formal meeting happened in Usec
Perez’ office on June 6, 2019 attended by
Victor Baron, Juan Antonio Perez and Carlo
Soldevilla (yours truly).
The meeting started at 2:00 p.m. and ended
at 3:00 p.m. .

Doc Perez presided the meeting with these

issues discussed:

Doc Vic suggested on the need to consider

Art Therapy to be included in the Primary
Health Care of POPCOM. He presented to
Doc Perez the invitation for a workshop
regarding Art Therapy for him and Carlo to
possibly attend.
Doc Perez did not so much welcome the
idea for the POPCOM staff to attend the
workshop with expenses coming from the
government. He suggested to conduct first
an operational research.
Doc Perez had this view that the training
could only do good to one individual to
have such an ‘art experience’ rather than
benefiting the entire community.

Dr. Perez doubted on the organizers’

intent—that they will keep the lessons or
art knowledge just for themselves that this
must not be shared or rolled out to the rest
of the community. Doc Perez had
apprehensions that, in the end, the
knowledge gained in the workshop won’t
be ‘shared’ to others knowing that the
organizers own or hold the product
(knowledge on art therapy).
Besides, Doc Perez said that this (art
therapy) can be the priority of the Mental
Health program and at the moment, this is
not the focus of the primary health care of
POPCOM. This can also be considered as
part of the work of HR.

To reiterate, Doc Perez emphasized that an

Operational Research is necessary for this,
like what the PAMET does (by knowing the
issues at the very core.).

(Dr. Perez does not like the Top-Down

approach-A situation where one person is
sermonizing on others to accept what one
person wants to implement. What Doc
Perez wants is the bottoms-up approach.
He prefers to have a dialog to know the
need of one particular group.)

Doc Perez suggested on the need to

understand other persons by way of
immersing oneself into the community to
know the real need or sentiments of the
people.

Dr. Perez stressed on the need to know the

person--His background, his family, his
needs, his priorities.

On the other side, Dr. Perez also cited the
relevance or importance of art (e.g.
murals).. that it is better to have a graphic
presentation of something rather than to
have a 5-year plan. The purpose is to
graphically visualize the community in
Mandaluyong .

Doctor Perez suggested this for a theme:

“Addition Hills – The Art Journey”. On the
art work, it must suggest ownership or
representation of the Mandaluyong
community rather just share a view of one
person- This, according to Doc Perez.

Another theme suggested by Doc Perez is

“Better Community by 2040’.
Doc Perez discussed about “Living Art”
that, 15-20 years from now, instead of
retiring, there will be no more retirement to
speak of but only a sustainable effort to
continue working on the art program as
visualized.

In this meeting of the Three, Doc Perez

acknowledged his limitations as to having
not so much time for him to allot to delve
or to discuss this art therapy project. . There
could be other issues that have to be
addressed in a community like problems on
drugs, migration, arson, etc.. rather than
this.

THE CHALLENGE

Several days after the meeting, Doc Vic was

challenged to do RESEARCH ON ART
THERAPY.

Here’s one he got (cut & paste):

The Efficacy of Art Therapy in Pediatric

Oncology Patients: An Integrative Literature
Review.

PROBLEM:
Children undergoing cancer treatment
experience detrimental adverse side effects
that may be addressed with complementary
and alternative medicine (CAM) such as art
therapy. The purpose of this research was
to examine the effects of art therapy in
pediatric patients living with cancer.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
An integrative literature review was
conducted using the CINAHL, OVID Medline,
and PsycINFO databases. Studies were
included if they were a primary source
utilizing an art therapy intervention in
children with cancer age birth to 18years
old, was published between the year 2000
and 2016, and written in the English
language.
SAMPLE:
Seven primary sources met inclusion
criteria.
RESULTS:
Few studies were reported in this review.
Findings of this review suggest that children
who participated in various forms of
drawing interventions exhibited enhanced
communication with family members and
healthcare providers. Additionally, children
were able to better express underlying
emotions, developed more effective coping
skills, and experienced a reduction in
adverse side effects.
CONCLUSIONS:
Implementing a drawing intervention or
other forms of art into the holistic care of a
pediatric oncology patient may assist in
maximizing quality of life and allow for a
more tolerable lifestyle.
IMPLICATIONS:
Acquiring a means of proper
communication with children through art
allows nurses to gain insight on the needs
of this special patient population, resulting
in a higher quality plan of care.

That explanation, cut & pasted above is the
main reason why Doc Vic wants Program
Implementation (Art Therapy) in relation to
Health & Wellness/Alternative and

THINKING GLOBALLY, ACTING LOCALLY

AGRICULTURE is one method of art

expression. It may form a part of Art
Therapy, and it’s included below in our
Art Therapy Checklist (to do’s).

Art Therapy Checklist

These are some of the things which we at
the clinic may want to do (after discussing
with some of the clinic personnel) or have
been already doing. The numbers will tell if
we have somehow achieve our goals. The
activity may not all be related to art
therapy. Nonetheless, I find the need to
post.):
clinic cooperative.............................0
paluwagan (short loan and payment
scheme............................0
river stone (displayed at the clinic) for body
scrub …but it’s for sale after office hours --
P30 each.............1

Dextrose Gardening (for emphasis) at the
back of clinic……..0 (This project is
sustainable. In summer, a dextrose will be
attached on each plant to provide slow but
continuous drip of water to sustain the
plant. POPCOM will then become a model
of urban gardening.).

Eggplants normally begin flowering and

bear fruits in 3 months time and will thrive
for a period of one year. After one year, no
replanting is needed. You just have to cut
the eggplant 6 inches from the base or
ground and it will produce another bud
which will bear fruits or vegetables again
after 3 months. The target date is also by
the end of June.
Putting up of dirty kitchen (makeshift) at
the back of clinic………0

Art Therapy Techniques (An Exercise)
By Carlo G. Soldevilla

1. Give the audience paint (odorless &

colored) and let them throw it toward the
canvass and later, let them have the design
they want (abstract, real or any art that
they like). They may use brush, feathers, or
hands or fingers as tools or instruments to
paint.
2. Give the audience charcoal (maybe there
are 7 of them) and let them sketch
anything they like on a manila paper pasted
or posted on the wall.
3. Give the audience paint and comb. Let
them spread the paint on canvass using
comb instead of brush.
4. Give the audience blue, red and yellow
paints and let them mix the color. On the
canvass, let them make cubism (e.g.
sketching a pot or vase). In cubism, instead
of drawing one pot, let them draw two or
three pots, lying on different directions.
They can draw 7 pots on one canvass if they
like.
5. Give the audience one brandy bottle
and give them also black and white paint to
‘surround’ the bottle with paintings (their
choice for a theme).
6. Give the audience (5-7 of them) one
canvass and the BRY (BLUE,RED, YELLOW)
colors and let them ‘paint’ together their
chosen theme. Except for the white color,
the BRY can produce all colors by simply
mixing them at the right proportion.
7. Give the audience one manila paper. Let
them draw as many lines and circles as
they can, and let them paint the spaces
they found using any color they want.

ACTION PLAN

If it will be somehow proven in

Mandaluyong that Art Therapy is useful, it
(Art Therapy) will become one of the clinic’s
method in reaching out to people having
illness , to help them particularly on mental
hygiene. Finally, the PFWC has this
approach or method in general:
HOLISTIC HEALTHCARE SERVICE APPROACH
(HHSA) believing that ‘What the mind can
conceive, the body can achieve.’.
